Sparks. Lasers. Smoke. Explosions. Pulsing lyrics...
The silence, the silence, the blinding ultraviolence...
Knocking at your door, pacing back and forth...
What now?In-Ring Interview: "Rowdy" Roddy PiperGordon Solie conducted the first interview of his CWA career, asking the Rowdy Scot his plans for the future. Piper responded by calling out the "Television Champion, that nasty, face-painted gorilla, looking like he just got caught in his mother's makeup bag," the Great Muta. The champion complied, making his silent way down the aisle, his title belt held over his left shoulder. Piper stood nose to nose with the champion and claimed "I know I can beat you--you know I can beat you. I just need more than fifteen lousy minutes." He went on to say that he didn't want to work somewhere we he couldn't defeat "sone half-rate flippity clown," and offered to put his CWA career on the line--if Muta gave him a
thirty minute match for the title. Muta, stoic as ever, simply nodded--then sprayed red mist in his challenger's face! Piper dropped like a stone, clutching at his eyes and screaming in agony. The champion turned on his heel and returned to the back while medical officials raced to the ring to tend to Piper.
I don't suppose either of you programmed that.I didn't.Sorry, boss. Can we at least flag eight-ought so that we know when its making changes to our programming?I can try, Melanie, but it jumps from program to program and subroutine to subroutine. It's hard to pin down.Of course it is. Just do it, okay? The Rock & Roll Express vs. The FantasticsReferee: Joey Marella
Robert Gibson and Bobby Fulton started the match, but it did not take long for the Fantastics to establish a rhythm of quick tags that kept Gibson on the ropes until he was able to make a desperation tag to his partner. Ricky Morton came in hot and took the fight to Fulton, who was the legal man at that point. Sensing that his team was in some trouble, Morton stretched. couple rules, taking the fight to the floor and slamming his opponent onto the ring apron. Morton rolled back into the ring and ran the ropes, then launched himself over the top rope to the floor, trying to take Fulton out, but Morton landed hard on his left leg, and came up limping badly. Fulton rolled into the ring at the count of five while Gibson raced around the ring to check on his partner; Morton tried his best, but could not make it back to his feet in time to beat Joey Marella's ten-count.
WINNERS: The Fantastics via count out (6:40) ½
Lou Thesz vs. Gorgeous George (with Cherie Dupré)Referee: Danny Davis
George started out strong...well, strong-ish, as nothing he attempted could even take Thesz off his feet until Cherie Dupré distracted both referee Danny Davis and Thesz himself, allowing George to charge from behind and hit a nasty chop block. With Thesz wounded, a ROLLING HIP LOCK earned a long count of two, George attempted to humiliate his opponent with a fingernail rake across his back, but that served only to ignite Thesz's temper. Ignoring the pain in his leg, Thesz tossed George into the corner and followed him in with a clothesline. The gorgeous one rolled underneath the bottom rope to try and catch his breath...and in the process, he grabbed one of his solid gold "Georgie pins." When Thesz followed him out to the floor, George spun around and jabbed the foreign object into his face! Raking the pin across Thesz's eyes, George soon had his opponent blinded, and the blatant action left Davis with no choice other than calling for the bell.
WINNER: Lou Thesz via disqualification (4:04) ½
Post-Match Drama
With Thesz on the ground and clutching at his face, Gorgeous George prepared to work over his fallen opponent, when all of a sudden...
You know it's the MacMilitant...
Coming to get it on...
"Genie" Teddy Long came out from the back, walking about a third of the way up the aisle and waving to the fans. George was so surprised by Long's appearance that he held off on his attack, and the GM nodded, telling the gorgeous one that he had better "get to steppin'" before he got suspended. Long went on to say that he wasn't going to take that sort of nonsense in the CWA, and he said that he was booking a rematch for the next show, on April 11th, and that the match would be fought under lumberjack rules! Long called out, "Now hit my music!" and danced his way to the back while George threw a fit at ringside.
Brutus "the Barber" Beefcake vs. "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers (with J.J. Dillon)
Referee: Dave Hebner
Beefcake took the advantage off a collar-and-elbow tie-up and whipped Rogers into the ropes, but the Nature Boy ducked under a back elbow and countered with a stiff overhand right that knocked Beefcake to the canvas. With Dillon shouting instructions, Rogers immediately clamped on his FIGURE FOUR GRAPEVINE, and the Barber held on for about ten seconds before finally submitting.
WINNER: "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers via submission (1:50) ½
Post-Match Interview: Gordon Solie climbed into the ring to have a word with Rogers and his new manager. Surprisingly, the normally verbose Rogers remained silent, allowing Dillon to do all the talking. The manager said that he and his "colleague" were recruiting among the very best in the game, from all over the world, to build a roster of champions that would dominate not only the CWA, but professional wrestling in general.
The Miracle Violence Connection vs. The Sheepherders
Referee: Tommy Young
The match began with Luke Williams poking Terry Gordy in the eye, then snap maring him to the mat and applying a waistlock. Gordy quickly powered his way to his feet and pulled off a standing switch, only to eat a back elbow by Williams. The Sheepherder went for another, but Gordy ducked it and countered with a European forearm, then tagged in his partner, "Dr. Death" Steve Williams.
The next few minutes were a mesmerizing exchange of quick tags, chain wrestling, and counters, not just by the MVC, but by the Sheepherders, showing the fans that they had some legitimate tag team chops as well. The match was fairly evenly contested until Gordy stunned Butch Miller with a big forearm, then planted him with a piledriver for one...two...no! Gordy picked him up off the mat and tagged in Dr. Death!
Steve Williams hoisted Miller up for his OKLAHOMA STAMPEDE, but before he could execute it, Luke Williams dashed into the ring, grabbed his partner's ankle, and pulled him off Dr. Death's shoulder. A quick jab sent the illegal Sheepherder to the mat, and Dr. Death grabbed Miller by the ankle, dragging him to the MVC corner and tagging in Terry Gordy. Gordy launched Miller across the ring with a huge German suplex, but he landed close to his own corner and was able to tag out to Luke Williams.
The fresh Sheepherder began laying into Gordy's midsection with punches and even tossed him out of the ring, only to wind up whipped into the ringside stairs himself. The MVC and the Sheepherders put on another clinic in textbook wrestling for several minutes, but gradually, the Miracle Violence Connection began to wear down their opponents. The end finally came when Gordy leveled Luke Williams with a lariat, then tagged in his partner, who hit an OKLAHOMA STAMPEDE. Miller tried to charge in to save his partner, but he ran right into Gordy and his ORIENTAL SPIKE. Dr. Death made the cover, and Tommy Young counted one...two...three!
WINNERS: The Miracle Violence Connection via pinfall (14:35) *
CWA Holoviaion Championship Match: The Great Muta (ch) vs. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper - Thirty Minute Challenge Match, Title vs. CareerReferee: Morgan Dollar
Before the match even began, Morgan Dollar was in Muta's face, reprimanding him in a loud voice for his attack on Piper earlier and informing Muta in no uncertain terms that he would not be getting away with any nonsense under his watch. For his part, Piper was still rubbing at his eyes, which remained red and irritated from the earlier attack. As soon as the bell rang, Muta shoved Dollar aside and charged at Piper, laying into him with kicks and chops. Piper tried to fight back, but wound up getting snap mared to the mat and caught in a figure four head scissors. Piper fought his way to the feet, only to get whipped hard into the turnbuckle. Muta mounted the second rope and began laying into his oppose with punches, but Piper grabbed hold of his waist, drove him forward, and nailed him with an inverted atomic drop, taking control of the match for the first time.
Piper swept Muta's leg, sending him to the mat, and clamped on a figure four leg lock, but the Pearl of the Orient was able to reach the ropes almost immediately, forcing a break of the hold (though Dollar's five-count was mighty slow). The Rowdy Scot launched an uppercut, which Muta sidestepped and countered with a face rake, then a jumping savage kick that knocked the wind out of Piper's chest. Muta hit a flying cross body block and a power drive elbow for a quick succession of two-counts, then went back to the figure four head scissors to catch his breath while squeezing the life out of his opponent. Piper was nearly unconscious when Muta released the hold to vault to the top rope and hit a picture perfect MOONSAULT, and
Piper kicked out at one!
Frustrated, Muta threw Piper through the ropes and out of the ring. Still dazed and staggering, Piper went to familiar territory and grabbed the timekeeper's bell. Muta launched himself over the top rope, and Piper swung the bell, catching Muta in the face and opening up a nasty gash in his forehead. Morgan Dollar had no choice other than calling for the bell (which, ironically, could not be rung because Piper was still holding it).
WINNER and STILL CWA Holovision Champion: The Great Muta via disqualification (11:00) ***½
Post-Match DramaAfter the decision was announced, a bloody Muta quickly grabbed his title belt and hurried to the back to receive medical attention for his cut. This left Piper alone in the ring to realize how large a mistake he had made. He looked crestfallen, then shook his head and gave a little laugh, for he went out in true Hot Rod style. He took a moment to acknowledge the cheering fans before leaving the CWA ring for the last time.
