Looks like cody got the trademark officially for his name and his father ... he also filed to get SLAMBOREE and the match beyond namesakes.
Copyrights are so weird, corporations are weird (and yeah it's kind or ironic I say this and have a Magnus Colby profile pic LOL)

Good. Calling him just Cody was the weirdest shit in the world. Copyright is a weird and shitty thing. It's suppose to protect creators of intellectual property and these major companies just rape and abuse the law to abuse said creators and their families.

I was listening to the Arn Show in the latest Q&A and Arn said he did trademark the name Arn Anderson, and he looks forward to making money with his name like others have done in the past. I thought that was atelling line. Very glad Cody is now officially Cody Rhodes everywhere.

I always hated him just being called CODY. I know he tried to own it but it just always seemed weird. I also don't know how WWE got away with trademarking that name, since they clearly didn't create the Rhodes name. I don't have a problem with them owning Stardust, since someone on the WWE staff, while on WWE payroll, came up with that name and gimmick. There are times where there can be some blurry lines as to who should be the owner, like with comic creators who create characters at Marvel or DC. The Rhodes name just isn't in that category though. Things like Starrcade or Bash at the Beach are different since Dusty created (or helped create) those while employed by WCW. Regardless, glad Cody is getting the rights to the Rhodes name back and I think it's cool to see AEW using events like Bash at the Beach.

They offer a lot of money and royalties when you sign your name over. You can't blame either party.

Copyrights (©) and Trademarks (® and ™) are different things, disclaimer, I'm not a Intellectual property lawyer, IP law is very complex, I just know a little (dangerous thing) because I was interested at one time.
Copyrights are on works (like novels or art) they give the creator control over who can duplicate those works. They are a good thing in that they let you make money off your work (by not letting others just sell their own copies of it). In the US they last for some time (like around 20-30 years) and can be renewed a number of times.
The Rhodes name here isn't a copyright (you cannot copyright names or individual words) it is a Trademark. Trademarks are actually much more confusing (but ironically are supposed to be about stopping confusion). They are originally based on identifying manufactures. Kraft® makes foodstuffs, other foodstuff manufactures cannot put Kraft on their products in such a way that might confuse a consumer into believing their product is made by Kraft foods... But it gets confusing for a bunch of reasons...
Trademarks: 1) are for a select range of products (say food items, or wrestling t-shirts) so different items may have the same name trademarked as long as they are different things (a Rhodes™ restaurant as opposed to Cody Rhodes™ the wrestler) 2) Trademarks must be actively defended, or they can be lost 3) Trademarks must be actively used, Cody got the Rhodes name ™ back because the WWE did not use it in a certain amount of time
That's about as far as I want to go (because you're all bored already). I suspect the WWE forces sign overs of some ™ as part of the employment process, but wrestlers are well compensated. You could choose not to, but that is basically choosing not to be employed and paid by the WWE. As I guy who makes much less than wrestlers, I've had employers make me agree to conditions of employment that are much crazier...
