I don't recall if we discussed Akuma's bio at GCON, so here it is...
"Akuma the Ninja was a feared and mysterious warrior in feudal Japan. During his adventures, he was exploring an ancient temple of a vanquished enemy. He found destroyed an artifact within the temple, which hurled him into the future, circa 2090. Thantos found him in a lair of rogues and mercenaries (think the Tatooine cantina in Star Wars) and hired him to be his bodyguard. Akuma thrived in this situation, often ambushing opponents after a match or on the way to the ring, and serving as a gatekeeper to Thantos."
Akuma the Ninja was created by Steve Minskoff and was given away at the first GalactiCon. To my knowledge, he was the first professionally printed bootleg in Champions of the Galaxy history. Many promoters had created bootlegs, including Dave Szymanak and Mark Ashby, but they usually lacked artwork and were typed or handwritten on full sheets of paper.
Akuma's original artwork was drawn by Steve's secretary. The stats were not quite "COTG street legal", with an "out of the ring" designation on Level 2 Offense. The following year, Steve released a revised version of Akuma with professional artwork (artist unknown) and updated stats. At GalactiCon 1992, Steve released a manager (Master Shogun) and tag team partner (Tsuyoi the Decimator) for Akuma, and high quality bootlegging was off to the races. A few years later, dealer's tables with promoter created bootlegs filled the sunroom at the Sheldon House.
Akuma's NINJA AMBUSH finisher is a moonsault.

Thanks Chad! I couldn't remember the whole story! Someone asked on Facebook a while ago, I didn't know exactly what the story was! 👍

Very happy to have this new Akuma as the special card for this new first virtual convention.
We were debating up until late on what card it would be. Tom had some interesting ideas but nothing really was a home run. He then was telling a story about talking to Steve Minskoff at an early GalactiCon about off the wall characters. But him mentioning Steve made me think of Akuma and that was the aha moment. A nice tribute to 30 years ago and Werner really knocked the art out of the park.
He won't be for sale, but its possible he could stealthy slip into a package or an auction item in the future.

Great piece of nostalgia for GalactiCon.

Steve's contributions to the high-end bootleg community were incredible. I'm sure the trend still would have happened at some point but, without Akuma, it may have taken several more years until someone decided to take the leap.

Has Akuma started showing up in people's online accounts, yet? Just wondering, because it hasn't yet shown up in mine...

Last night when I played out and posted the results for my most recent LOW show, I thought strongly of making Akuma the Ninja the mystery tag partner for the Road Warriors in their previously announced 6 man tag match against the Midnight Express and Mr. Hughes. Akuma the Ninja will undoubtedly show up somewhere soon at least as a guest appearance/special attraction in one of my feds.
