Hey Guys,
Recently my best friend Tom (as in Tough Tom) passed. I told him for years I wanted to try to start playing the Indie series but I never ended up doing so. On my birthday (the 11th) we couldn't hang out and he couldn't come over because he was playing with you guys. I got a rundown of every match he played with you guys and discussed how all he needed was some kind of alcohol to add to his experience. I followed Tom's card promotion like I would any real life promotion and had so much fun giving him input and also helping him find random cards on eBay. This game and community brought my friend so much joy and I miss him dearly and feel like I should finally take the dive and start.... Which is why I'm here. I see a ton of sets, starters, expansions, accessories, and it's a bit overwhelming. Where do you guys suggest I start? What all do I need?

All you need is to choose your favorites, honestly.
For a newcomer to the Indies sets, I suggest picking a favorite fed (Chikara, ROH, Evolve or Shimmer) and then get their starter set. From there you can add whatever sets you like depending on which wrestlers you like.
No need to buy everything, just find what you want and go from there. PMing TournamentMaster to answer questions on sets is also a good idea.

Welcome aboard :-)
I can only speak to the COTG side of things since I don't play the Legends or Indies. I'm a recently returning player. I decided to buy a 2087 starter set (actually got both b&w and color, and a few other of the first b&w sets from the early years) the 2119 starter set as well as everything from 2125 and up. I originally played from 2087 to about 2108 back in the 90's, so this time I just wanted a flavor of different periods in GWF history (which is why I got the 2119 set although I'll only use those cards when I have Kronos matches).... having said all that, It really depends on where you want to start. If it were me, I'd start with 2125 (along with the extra color card set that gets you the entire roster for that year) and go from there.

Just want to echo the sentiments of my friends and fellow promoters... TTX has really given you the best advice for starting out and Tournament Master can certainly point you in the right direction for whatever you're looking for... Have a look at what wrestlers are available in the different sets and use that to decide on the talent you would like to populate your fed... There is lots of information here on the boards and plenty of helpful people that are always willing to offer advice and feedback... Very sorry for your loss and I hope playing the game brings you lots of fond memories of your friend.

Welcome DoomzdayVery sorry for your loss man. What's good about any of the indy starter sets is that you also get everything else that you would need in order to play (in addition to a great set of cards that could easily act as it's own fed) - aka the instructions, charts and a set of dice. Really dig your avatar by the way! Take it easy.

Thank you guys all so much for being helpful, unfortunately I didn't realize there was a New Player section when I posted this. If a mod could move it it would be ultra appreciated.

Doomzday, I was shocked and sad to hear about the passing of Tough Tom. I work on most of the Indy sets and Tough Tom always had the nicest things to say to me about my work both here on the board and in PMs. In regards to the Indy sets, I guess it depends on what you like. If you like GCW (I am actually going to GCW in Indianapolis today) then you will probably like the most recent Indy set as (if I remember correctly) 6 of the 8 names were GCW regulars. I remember Tough Tom told me he particularly liked the Balcony Dive mechanic on Matthew Justiceβs card.
