Really enjoying the discussion on Lance and the whole “reimagined” debate. As the guy who has been tasked with producing the art on these sets (88-current), I’m not actually aware of when the sets officially became labeled as “reimagined”. They just started being called that one day and here we are.
I thought both Star Warrior and Thanatos were “reimagined” if not completely redone like new characters in 2087. Star Warrior is no different than At-Las in my eyes. Same guy, hair and outfit are new but you can tell it’s not Wolf or anyone else. Clearly Star Warrior. But then you look at Thantos and it looks like a totally new character. I don’t put Lance or anyone else I can think of in that category w Thantos. By definition, I think he’s the poster boy for “reimagined”.
It would be fun to discuss which characters moving forward need or don’t need the reimagined treatment. There’s certainly no method involved. Some guys just end up coming out looking a little differently. Each situation is different. At-Las got a new look because we just did a color card for him. Will be interesting to see and hear the reactions for one more guy in this set who - now that I’m actually thinking about it - prob will be viewed as getting the reimagined treatment too.
Fun discussion!! I hope!’ Lol I’m definitely having fun with Werner creating these things and appreciate the trust given to me working on these cards. Keep the feedback coming!

I'm all for these sets, like I said and I think Rob kind of said, it's like Ultimate Marvel. When you see the re-imagined art you know who it is but different things happened in this realm and resulted in new looks. I would hope if not done already but should be, maybe little move changes as well. Like a guy did a boston crab before but now does a sharpshooter. There pin was on a six on level three but now it's on one. They dont have to be major just little things to indicate it's the same guy but different life.

He doesn't have the main villain look like the original. He kind of just looks like a peripheral character. The pose and costume are both a little soft imo. I haven't seen all of these color remakes, but the others I have seen all seem to keep their place in the hierarchy, if that makes sense. Meaning I can look at the important characters and see they're supposed to be important. And let's face it: some of these costumes and hairstyles on the cards were originally created in the late 1980s and early 1990s, so a few are naturally going to need a little makeover.

the new version of Thantos doesn't even look like him. I mean maybe Cosmos from a few years earlier, but clearly not Thantos 2087.

I haven’t gotten any of the newer stuff, but agree about the Thantos. The original looked like a grizzled bad ass, but the new one looks like a snarky youngster.

To me, Lance was ALWAYS a pretty spaced out(heh) guy. Not really there mentally when it came to the melodrama of the backstage life, kinda in his own world, but when it came to brass tax he was dialed in. This version of him speaks to that much more to me.
As for 2087 Thanatos vs Reimagined Thanatos, Reimagined wins out for me. 2087 always looked like a bad costume my uncle would wear on Halloween to me. Reimagined reminds me of a more modern heel archetype. One you could actually see being a slimey, spineless asshole. However, I'm in a different position with it. I didn't experience the game back in the beginning and didn't feel the real weight of the B&W cards like many here have.
