Thanks
Pariah for the comments. I could not agree more that Muldoon claiming the title was a big surprize and it really has shaken up the top of the singles division. The battle for the top prize is going to get a lot tighter after the events of card 37!
Card 37 – Maple Leaf Wrestling –Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, Ontario (2021.12.12)
Rock Riddle v. Mikey WhipwreckReferee: Joey Marella; Dr. Mike Lano at ringside
The action was back and forth with Riddle attempting to slow the pace without much success before the match went to the floor. Riddle decided to smash Whipwreck with a chair and Marella called for the disqualification.
Winner: Mikey Whipwreck by disqualification *
Chris Candido & “Mr. Electricity” Steve Regal v. Hillbilly Jim & Al Snow w/HeadReferee: Morgan Dollar; Dr. Mike Lano at ringside
Candido & Regal were in the face of Dollar before the bell and the official looked shaken up. After the bell, Jim was able to use his size to control against Candido. Jim sent Candido into the rope and on the rebound, Candido countered a backdrop with an inside cradle. Dollar made what appeared to many at ringside to be a quick count and this one was over.
Winners: Chris Candido & Steve Regal DUD
Jim Londos v. SandmanReferee: Morgan Dollar; Dr. Mike Lano
This contrast of style turned into a thriller before it was all said and done. Londos used his skills to dominate the first half of the match picking up several near falls and wearing down Sandman with fireman carry slams and crotch lift & slams. Sandman was able to get control and a tombstone piledriver stopped Londos’ attack cold. Three times Sandman executed his WHITE RUSSIAN LEG SWEEP finisher but could not get the victory. The action went to the floor and Sandman went to grab a chair but Londos grabbed Dr. Lano’s camera bag and swung for the fences smashing Sandman in the face. Back in the ring, Londos applied a short arm scissors and dazed Sandman could not defend himself causing Dollar to call the match.
Winner: Jim Londos. *****
Powers of Pain (The Barbarian & Warlord) w/Mr. Fuji v. “Raging Bull” Manny Fernandez & Barry WindhamReferee James Beard; Dr. Mike Lano at ringside
This was over before it even got underway as the Powers of Pain double up on Windham immediately with a backbreaker onto partner and moments later a POWER HEAD BUTT ends it.
Winners: Powers of Pain DUD
Trillium Title Tournament – Round Two
Sherri Martel (1) v. Joyce Grable (8)Referee Dick Woehrle; Dr. Mike Lano at ringside
Martel and Grable countered each other before Martel sent Grable into the ropes. Both ladies executed a clothesline on the rebound sending both competitors to the mat. Martel recovers first and comes off the top with a TOP ROPE SPLASH to advance to the next round without any real resistance.
Winner: Sherri Martel DUD
Marcus Alexander Bagwell & 2 Cold Scorpio v. British Bulldogs (Dynamite Kid & Davey Boy Smith)Referee: James Beard; Dr. Mike Lano at ringside
The pace and back and forth nature of this match kept the fans on the edge of their seats from bell to bell. There was some controversy however when a deathjump took out Beard for ten moves mid way through the match and it looked like the Bulldogs may have had the match one after a deathjump crossbody from Kid on Bagwell when the referee was still down. Both teams picked up near falls as the match carried on but no one was able to get their finisher in before Bagwell & Scorpio caught Kid flush with a double shoulder tackle and picked up the three count in a shocking upset.
Winners: Marcus Alexander Bagwell & 2 Cold Scorpio ****
Harley Race v. Masked SuperstarReferee: Morgan Dollar; Dr. Mike Lano at ringside
Race looked very focused at the outset and worked the lower body with a deathlock but Superstar made the ropes to avoid defeat and then was able to catch Race going to the top slamming the former Canadian Heavyweight Champion to the mat. Race kicked out after a SWINGING NECKBREAKER but a COBRA HOLD put Race down.
Winner: Masked Superstar *
Canadian Open Tag Team Title Ladder Match – Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) [ch] w/Paul Ellering v. Valiant Brothers (“Handsome” Jimmy Valiant & “Luscious” Johnny Valiant) w/Captain Lou Albano Referee: Morgan Dollar; Dr. Mike Lano at ringside
This was about as bloody and wild as you would expect with the history between these two teams. The Valiant Brothers managed to cut off Animal for a long stretch of time battering him into a bloody mess including ramming the ladder into the Road Warrior at ringside. Animal survived a pair of SPINNING NECKBREAKERS and a DOUBLE CLOTHESLINE but it took the distraction of Paul Ellering to keep the match going after a SUPER ELBOW. Hawk was eventually able to tag into the match and he rammed “Luscious” Johnny’s face into the ladder again, again, again and again and he was reduced to a bloody pulp. It was Captain Lou Albano who made a key distraction this time after a DOOMSDAY DEVICE. The mayhem continued. Jimmy Valiant was taken out by a DOOMSDAY DEVICE but Johnny made the save knocking Hawk from the ladder. It was back and forth with both teams trading the advantage but in the end Animal crushed Johnny Valiant with his POWER SLAM and then climbed the ladder to retain the straps.
Winners: Road Warriors *****
Loser Leaves Town I Quit Match – Magnum T.A. v. Tully Blanchard w/J.J. DillonReferee: Joey Marella; Dr. Mike Lano at ringside
This was a brutal war from start to finish. Blanchard held the advantage for somewhat longer than Allen and it was Allen who was busted open early after a run into the ring post. Blanchard wore the crimson mask late after a wicked chair shot from Magnum. Both men were bloodied and battered when Blanchard avoided a charge to the corner sending Allen crashing into the ring post. Allen was clearly dazed and Blanchard applied a figure four leglock. Allen was not responding and Barry Windham came to ringside throwing in the towel for his friend. Blanchard is declared the winner!
Winner: Tully Blanchard ****
Canadian Heavyweight Title Match – William Muldoon [CH] v. Shane Douglas w/FrancineReferee: James Beard; Dr. Mike Lano at ringside
This was a lengthy battle that the champion controlled 90% of as Muldoon ground his challenger into the mat with hold after hold after hold. The distraction of Francine saved Douglas from submitting at one point but it did nothing to change the momentum of the match with Muldoon retaining after a BODY LIFT & THROW.
Winner: William Muldoon **
After the match, Harley Race comes out and gets into an exchange of words with Muldoon but they are quickly joined by Masked Superstar who has his own thoughts on who should be next challenger for the Canadian Title after his victory over Race tonight.
