Great Lakes Championship Wrestling TV Tapings
Treasure Island Resort & Casino: Welch, MN
Show 14: August 7 (Taped July 31)
Mick Karch and “Ringside” Ralph Strangis recapped last week’s show and had two huge announcements for Great Lakes Championship Wrestling’s return to St. Paul on August 29. First of all, this card will take place outdoors as part of the “Great Minnesota Get-Together”—the annual Minnesota State Fair!
Because of their win last week, The PitBulls will challenge Jim Brunzell and Jerry Lynn for the Great Lakes Tag Team championships! And in the main event, Ed “Strangler” Lewis will return to GLCW to defend the WWWA World Heavyweight championship against current Great Lakes Heavyweight champion Dan “The Beast” Severn! Severn defeated Lewis back in February 2020 in West St. Paul to become the first champion and could take Lewis’ World title!
1) Mad Dog Vachon (2) earned a hard-fought win over Mikey Whipwreck (3). Vachon was his usual aggressive self at the start. He hit a running knee lift for a two-count and then executed a Mad Dog Pounce. While Adam Kennedy warned Vachon about choking on the ropes, Teddy Long came up to Whipwreck and slapped him in the face. Whipwreck took control on a missed move by Vachon and hit an impressive huracanrana or Frankensteiner, which he calls the Frankenmikey. He hit a Stunner-type maneuver but Vachon rolled out of the ring before Mikey could try for a pin. Mikey followed and Teddy distracted Kennedy, which allowed Vachon to grab a chair from the ringside area and smash Whipwreck in the stomach. He tossed Mikey back into the ring and hit a gutbuster to score the pinfall with about 15 seconds left in the 10-minute time limit. Vachon and Long were interviewed after the bout and Long stated that Al Snow would face the same fate in Lake Lillian tomorrow!
2) The Rock ‘n Roll Express defeated Bun Boy Barton and Tom “Rocky” Stone (2) in short order, keeping Stone in the ring the entire time. Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson tagged in-and-out. Robert used a sleeper on Stone to wear him down but Stone grabbed the ropes. Ricky tagged in, whipped Stone into the ropes, and hit the crossbody block to score the pinfall in six minutes, while Robert knocked down Bun Boy with a dropkick. The Rock ‘n Rolls were interviewed by Mick afterward and said they are looking forward to beating the Long Riders tomorrow and then getting another shot at the Great Lakes Tag Team titles in the near future!
3) Tully Blanchard got a hard-earned win over Baron Von Raschke (2) in 16 minutes of a 20-minute match. This was a back-and-forth bout that saw the action go out of the ring a few times. Blanchard took control after one brawl and got the Baron down on the mat. He came off the turnbuckles with a backward elbow smash for a near fall. The Texan stayed in control and hit the slingshot suplex to score the win. In an interview with Mick after the bout, Blanchard said that what he just did to Von Raschke is what he’s going to do to his partner Johnny Saint tomorrow in Lake Lillian!
4) In a match-up of fan favorites, “The Ragin’ Bull” Manny Fernandez scored a submission win over Al Snow (1). Despite Snow’s interference costing Fernandez the Great Lakes Heavyweight title two weeks ago in Mankato, Fernandez offered his hand in sportsmanship to Snow and Snow accepted, which drew a big cheer from the Treasure Island crowd. The two exchanged some great scientific wrestling holds. The action picked up and Fernandez nailed Snow with the Flying Burrito but Snow had landed near the ropes and was able to get his foot on the bottom rope for a break. Fernandez tried another maneuver—the sleeper, right in the center of the ring. Snow fought hard for the ropes but started to drop. Brent Fillmore checked Snow’s arm and it dropped three times, so “The Ragin’ Bull” got the win after six minutes of intense action. Immediately after getting his hand raised, Fernandez politely woke up Snow and then helped him to his feet. He again offered his hand and a groggy Snow accepted. In an interview with Mick after, Fernandez said he knows that Dan Severn is adept at submissions, so if that’s what he (Fernandez) needs to use to win the Great Lakes championship, he will do that!
Mick and “Ringside” Ralph ran down tomorrow’s card one more at the Big Kandiyohi Lake County Park East at Lake Lillian Days!
*Johnny Saint will grapple with Tully Blanchard! The British technician scored an impressive pinfall on Blanchard on the July 24 edition of Great Lakes Championship Wrestling and Blanchard is hoping to avenge that loss!
NEW *In a truly international match-up, The Great Gama of Teddy Long’s Playas’ Club will battle the German “Clawmaster” Baron Von Raschke!
NEW *A feud that has seen some wild battles will continue, as “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka will face The Sandman, accompanied by Francine!
*Al Snow will do battle with another member of the Playas’ Club Mad Dog Vachon! The martial artist Snow defeated Mad Dog’s brother Butcher a few weeks ago at the Kato Ballroom and hopes to do the same against the older brother!
*In tag team competition, the former Great Lakes Tag Team champions The Rock ‘n Roll Express will battle The Long Riders! The Irwins scored a big win over Ricky Morton Robert Gibson on the June 5 edition of Great Lakes Championship Wrestling. Both teams are hoping to earn another shot at champions Jim Brunzell and Jerry Lynn. Who will leave Lake Lillian the winners?
*The main event will see Dan “The Beast” Severn put the Great Lakes Heavyweight championship on the line in a rematch from the Kato Ballroom against “The Ragin’ Bull” Manny Fernandez! Fernandez appeared to have the champion down for the count after the Flying Burrito but Al Snow’s involvement led to a disqualification and Severn retaining the title. Can Fernandez capture the gold from the dominant champion?
