Show 16: August 21 (Taped August 14)
A video recap aired of Teddy Long receiving the news last week that Big Van Vader will be on this episode to answer his challenge for a match with The Great Gama!
1) Joe Blanchard was victorious in about one minute over Bun Boy Barton. Blanchard outwrestled the masked Barton and caught him in the abdominal stretch to score the submission. After the bout, Evan “Strangler” Lewis came to the interview area and demanded Mick Karch come over. He told Blanchard that it was foolish to challenge him to a rematch after what he did to Blanchard back in May in St. Paul with the stranglehold. But he accepted Blanchard’s challenge for a match at the Minnesota State Fair and said that history will repeat itself in the capitol city!
2) The Diamond Exchange, today consisting of “Ravishing” Randy Rose and King Kong Bundy, made short work of Jake “The Milkman” Milliman and Buddy Lane. Diamond Dallas Page stood ringside and cheered on his two tag team partners, as they kept Milliman in the ring for the entire bout. Rose came off the second rope with an elbow drop, then tagged in the New Jersey giant. The two Diamond Exchange members hit a double clothesline and Bundy covered Milliman to score the pin in about two minutes. In an interview with Mick after, DDP stated that while the Diamond Exchange has lots of “bling,” they would love the Great Lakes Tag Team gold! He ended with “Good God!” and “BANG!”
3) “The Clawmaster” Baron Von Raschke (2) did it again, as he scored another pinfall on The Great Gama (6)! The German grappler wanted to prove his win at Lake Lillian Days was no fluke. He went for the brain claw early but Gama had it scouted and dodged the move, with Teddy Long yelling encouragement at ringside. Gama blocked a fireman’s carry attempt from Von Raschke with a sprawl and hit a gut wrench throw to score a near fall. The Indian grappler used a double leg takedown into a hard slam and tried for a pin but Von Raschke got his shoulder up. With the fans behind him, Von Raschke surprised Gama with a back suplex and scored a two-count. He hit a backbreaker drop for another near fall. Von Raschke stomped around the ring and then applied the claw! The Treasure Island fans went wild as Gama started to bleed from the power of this maneuver. He started to drop to the mat but with Long yelling encouragement, got a foot on the bottom rope for a break. Von Raschke swiped at the Playas’ Club manager with a claw! Gama stumbled to his feet blinded by his own blood but got caught in the claw once again! Von Raschke powered Gama down to his shoulders and scored the pinfall after 12 minutes! The fans went wild! Von Raschke was interviewed by Mick and he said that it doesn’t matter where you are from, you will always go down to the claw, and that is all the people need to know! Long and a bloodied Gama entered the interview area but before Long could speak, familiar music hit and Big Van Vader came into Treasure Island! The behemoth from the Rocky Mountains said that he had to wait a long time to reenter the United States but he's hear and he accepts Long’s challenge for another match with him! He said he’ll see them at the state fair!
“Ringside” Ralph Strangis gave an update for the August 29 card from the “Great Minnesota Get-Together”—the Minnesota State Fair!
NEW*“Superfly” Jimmy Snuka will go one-on-one with Mad Dog Vachon of Teddy Long’s Playas’ Club! Will it be the high-flying Fijian warrior or the Algerian brawler leaving the Fairgrounds the winner?
*Two Texans will tangle, when “The Ragin’ Bull” Manny Fernandez faces Tully Blanchard!
*Another Blanchard will be in action, as Joe Blanchard looks for revenge against Evan “Strangler” Lewis! Blanchard was put out of action for three months by Lewis’ stranglehold. He has to be very careful of this deadly maneuver. Can the Texan avenge that injury?
NEW*A match that Teddy Long has pleaded for for months will finally happen, when Long’s Playas’ Club member The Great Gama faces Big Van Vader! These two powerhouses battled almost two years ago in Richfield in the initial tournament to crown a Great Lakes Heavyweight champion, with Vader coming out the winner. Since that time, Gama has taken on Long as his manager and Long has upped the ante to Vader, trying to get him back in the United States. Vader has finally accepted the offer. What will happen in this meeting?
*Minnesota’s own Jim Brunzell and Jerry Lynn will defend the Great Lakes Tag Team championship against The PitBulls! After having two time-limit draws on Great Lakes Championship Wrestling, these teams had a 30-minute time-limit match that “The Original Dogs of War” won on the July 31 episode, thanks in large part to the use of one of their dog collar chains. Can the Philadelphia brawlers win the gold?
*The main event will be a much-anticipated bout, as Ed “Strangler” Lewis returns to Great Lakes Championship Wrestling to defend the WWWA World Heavyweight championship against the current Great Lakes Heavyweight champion Dan “The Beast” Severn. Lewis, as a GLCW representative, won the title in the one-night, eight-man tournament back on May 20 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But he has a history with Severn, dating back to February 2020, when Severn defeated him in two straight falls at the West St. Paul Armory to become the first Great Lakes Heavyweight champion. Severn has been a fighting Great Lakes champion and would love to become the second WWWA champion. This bout will have a 60-minute time limit! Can Severn defeat Lewis once again, this time for the top prize in the WWWA or will the “Strangler” keep his stranglehold on the belt?
After the commercial break, the show concluded with an in-ring interview led by Mick. Great Lakes Heavyweight champion Dan “The Beast” Severn, accompanied by his training partner Al Snow, entered the ring first. Next up was the current WWWA World Heavyweight champion Ed “Strangler” Lewis. Both grapplers were greeted with great respect by the Treasure Island fans. Mick told the “Strangler” that it had been a while since GLCW fans had seen him in person in this area. Lewis thanked the fans for their support and said that that support helped him win “this” (holding up the beautiful WWWA World title belt). Severn complemented Lewis’ skills but said that while he has been gone, Severn has been right here defending the Great Lakes title in front of the great fans of Minnesota and Wisconsin! He reminded Lewis that he won the title back in 2020 by defeating him (Lewis) in two straight falls in West St. Paul! Lewis seemed bothered by that fact but remained calm. The World champ said that a lot of time has past since then and a lot has happened in the world. He complimented Severn’s skills as well but said that now that he’s got the World title, he’s going to keep a stranglehold on it! Severn told him, he’ll see him at the fairgrounds!
Next week on Great Lakes Championship Wrestling, “The Golden Boy” Adrian Adonis will be back in action, as well as Evan “Strangler” Lewis! Plus, two great singles bouts, as Johnny Saint faces Diamond Dallas Page of the Diamond Exchange, and one-half of the Great Lakes Tag Team champions “Jumping” Jim Brunzell battles PitBull #2 in a preview of the Tag Team title match from the state fair!
