Catching up on the action here. As much as I like the booking, I love seeing those old arenas. Thanks! The search for arena pics has been a fun side gig on this thread, figuring out where to run, then chasing down good images. Lots of heels getting heat in these qualifying matches. I'm picking Flair to win the initial title. Looking forward to more! The initial rounds have been pretty heel heavy, which is interesting and should allow for some good initial angles once we get to dig into the individual territories.

Road to Gold Stop #6 Madison Square Garden in New York City The show opens with Vince McMahon coming out to make a HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT. Added to an already stacked card is a special international match that will determine another slot in the World Title tournament. True North Wrestling’s own Brett Hart will face off again Japanese superstar Antonio Inoki for a spot in the one night tournament in San Francisco at the end of the month!Jimmy Snuka vs Paul RomaIn a shocking opener of a match, Paul Roma took control early and overwhelmed Snuka with offense, finishing him off with a diving elbow drop to earn the quick pin fall. Winner: Paul Roma (*)Honky Tonk Man vs Jake RobertsAnother quick match, with Honky Tonk controlling much of the early offense. But the instant Jake Roberts started to mount a comeback, Honky Tonk didn’t take any chances, rolling outside and hitting Jake with his guitar to earn the DQ. After the match Honky Tonk Man celebrated in the ring as if he won, threatening the ref until he raised his hand despite the official match announcement. Winner: Jack Roberts (via DQ) (*)Andre the Giant & Randy Savage vs Natural DisastersA fun back and forth match with lots of Big Man vs Big Man spots between Andre and both members of Natural Disasters. Savage did a lot of the ring work, then in the end tagged in Andre who secured the win with back to back splashes on Earthquake. Winner: Andre the Giant and Randy Savage (**)Bob Backland came out, riling up the crowd claiming its a travesty that he was not chosen to be in the Tournament Qualifying match- saying he would take any match for the right to face the winner of the qualifying match to prove NWF management made a mistake by overlooking him...Heavyweight Tournament Qualifier: Bret Hart vs Antonio InokiInoki cam out aggressive, but the Canadian native Bret Hart seemed to have a counter for everything. The Japanese big man would work his way to the ropes, but the damage was done, and soon after Hart nailed a piledriver for the upset. Winner: Bret Hart (**)MAIN EVENT Heavyweight Tournament Qualifier: Hulk Hogan vs Bruno SammartinoThe story of this match was Bruno Sammartino sinking in the bear hug time after time, while Hulk Hogan found a way to break out of it, start a comeback, only to end up right back in the devastating hold. It looked at one point that Hogan might actually mount enough offense to pull off the comeback victory, but one final bear hug was too much for Hulkamania, with Hogan eventually passing out. Winner: Bruno Sammartino (***)Tune in next week for the FINAL STOP on our Road to Gold tour, where we head to Memphis, Tennessee for the Memphis Championship Wrestling!

As Lawler sets him up for another, Hart again distracts the ref, allowing for Tommy Rich to nail Lawler with Jimmy Hart’s cain- following it up with a deep sleeper hold. With Lawler refusing to tap, Rich transitions into a Thesz Press for pin and shocking upset. Rich and Hart mock the crowd as they leave the arena in celebration. Winner: Bruno Sammartino (***)Roddy Piper vs Ted DibiaseRoddy Piper came out firing, and Dibiase never really recovered. He narrowly escaped an early sleeper hold, but got cut off any time he tried to mount an offensive attack. In the end Piper locked in a figure four leglock in the middle of the ring, forcing Dibiase to tap. Winner: Roddy Piper (**)Roddy Piper vs Bruno SammartinoPiper again came out quickly to force the offense, but Bruno brushed off the initial attack and took over. From there it was academic, as Piper was on his heels the rest of the match until a brutal running boot put him on his back for good. Winner: Bruno Sammartino (**)Verne Gagne vs Brett HartGagne came out quickly, overwhelming Hart with offense and looking to end the match before it could really get started. Bret survived the onslaught to make a valiant comeback, trapping Gagne in the Sharpshooter for what looked like a huge upset in the tournement… but Verne just barely got to the ropes, was able to recover and locked in the Sleeper to claim victory. Winner: Vern Gagne (***)Ric Flair vs Bruiser BrodyFlair was masterful in this one, surgically attacking Brody’s legs all match, till the big man was limping around and barely moving. It didn’t stop Brody from nailing a late piledriver for a close 2 count, and almost stealing the match again with a late lariat. But Flair would hit Brody with a chair when the referee’s back was turned, before rolling up a woozy Brody in the ring to pick up the controversial win. Winner: Ric Flair (***)Ric Flair vs Verne GagneFlair tried the same approach with Gagne that he did with Brody, working over the legs to try and set up the figure four- but Gagne seemed ready for it. Verne reversed a toss into the ropes, and hit a flying head scissors, then a dropkick before sinking in a sleeper hold. Flair managed to get out of it, but Verne worked to get it back on and Flair passed out before he could counter. Winner: Verne Gagne (***)Bruno Sammertino vs Verne GagneA classic back and forth match, with both men scoring near falls and exchanging offense. Bruno seemed poised to catch Gagne in the Bearhug late, but Gagne avoided, hit the ropes and came off with a thunderous dropkick that knocked Bruno out cold… giving Verne an opening for the pin fall, the victory, and the belt as the inaugural National Pro Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Champion! Winner: Verne Gagne (****)

WRESTLING NEWS Welcome to The Pro Wrestling Tribune, your one stop shop for all the news, insights, and rumors floating around in the world of professional wrestling. With the newly formed National Pro Wrestling Alliance crowning their first world champion, the focus shifts to who will be Verne Gagne’s first challenger. Sources say that first challenge will come from non other than Gagne’s own Midwest Wrestling Alliance. NPWA Chairman Roy Shire all but confirmed this, stating the champ himself would announce his next challenger, and given reports of Verne being spotted in St. Louis it seems highly likely that MWA will host the first defense. Around the rest of the country, the major territories seem primed to start crowning their own local champions. Northwest Wrestling Federation has already announced a rematch of Bruno Sammartino vs Hulk Hogan will headline their next Madison Square Garden show for the Northeast Heavyweight Championship. Atlantic Championship Wrestling has also announced a tournament to crown their own champion, and Mid South has followed suit as well. We don’t have confirmation from California, Texas, or Memphis- but none are advertising a world champion appearance, further indicating that the champ will be defending at a potential big venue show later this month at the Kiel Auditorium. With that, The Tribune will be providing recaps of the Midwest Alliance tour, including any World Title defense. The announced card for this week in St. Louis:Sgt. Slaughter vs Baron Von Raschke The Hennigs vs The Vachons The Crusher vs The Sheik MAIN EVENT: Nick Bockwinkel (w/Heenan) vs Dick the Bruiser
