I've been waffling over this game for over a year, since I first learned of it. I decided to jump in, but the starting point for COTG is a bit confusing for me. The GWF Legends 2125 seems to be the most complete starting set available, but I am aware there is a running story line the predates that set. It's not clear to me how the canonical story lines impact the game apart from giving the background necessary to start your federation. Do the start sets include a rundown of the history that came before?
Thanks for any guidance or input.

I'd compare it to comic books. You don't have to know what happened in Spider-Man 129 to enjoy the new story arc, but it's cool if you do. There's a lore and history, but nothing that NOT knowing will impact your enjoyment of the game. Actually, 2125 is a really fun jumping on point with a lot of great characters.

Framed on the wall of my office! The only comic I kept when I sold off my collection.

Want to mirror the statements as there have been multiple 'jump on' points in GWF history and there's nothing saying you can't retcon your fed and go back and play the earlier years if your fed grabs you and you get caught up, but want to keep playing more.

Really tough question to answer. The honest truth is you obviously miss a lot. We don’t get to 2125 unless 2087 - 2124 are successful.
Here’s the good news. We have color 2087-2091 available with 2092 on the horizon at some point. 87-92 is largely considered the boom period of the GWF. Star Warrior, Thantos, Wolf, the Gladiators and Chaos. All the big names from those early years are all there. You can play 2125 + then take breaks to catch up on the early stuff (say 12 cards a year) and start building up an early history that way.
On top of all of that, we have the Kronos games featuring lots of historical wrestlers from all the GWF eras and years. A HOF fed where time and space allow for fighters from 2087 - 2137 (the current year) to come together and fight in a canon fed outside of the GWF.
So lots of options and all of them are great! You can’t go wrong. Good luck and remember - the dice don’t lie!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I went with 2125, it looks like it will give me enough to work with as a start. I may take some of the suggestions and do a flashback fed if the game clicks for me.

2125 is a great starting place and not too far back to catch up. I do agree that if you like the game, getting the early stuff adds a lot.

Swarm, however the Sudden Death sets give us some of my favorite characters - Raven, updated artwork for Alpha Force, SE cards for Brute and Massacre, and Bishop Hell. I also love the Revolution sets as there are some great characters there as well, and Civil War. That's why I'm hoping they get to those sets as those were some of my favorites in general. The trouble is after 2093, who knows if we get more color re-imaging, which is a bummer. I myself, a player who got back into it, took the time to track down basically all B&W editions from 2087 to 2124 and SE cards, just so I could play it from the jump. But, it's not cheap, and it's a bit challenging. So if you can do it, my recommendation would be to go that route - only over time, like Rob said.

The roster is a for sure large enough to give you plenty of story lines to explore. The game plays well at this point even without the history of the some of the characters. The one tip I would offer is grabbing the list of finishers off the board before you start the action. The book for the set is light on the finisher information. That is my only complaint about the set. Great art, fund mechanics and plenty of variety. I think it might have been throwingtoasters that had a copy. Hope this helps.

In my color card fed, I have played 2125-2137 (currently in September 2137 which is the game month with my annual Vega Warfare match where I bring in the new wrestlers for the following game year) and 2087-May 2091 (I am currently playing this chapter now) as well as Centra 2115- September 2117.
I found 2125 to be a good starting point and it has what you need to start your fed for that year and it is obviously the most recent official of the different starting points of 2074, 2087, 2119, and 2125. You can build up a good fed history from 2125 through 2137. But I would also go back and play the other years at some point too (using either the color cards as new sets of prior years get released and/or the black and white cards for the previous years) to fill in your history and expand upon it.
