Michigan Panthers are 2-0. This could be 1983 all over again.

After three days of the NFL draft I turned on my TV Sunday to watch my Michigan Panthers play. A great way to cap a long weekend of football. Unfortunately, the lost but it was nice seeing them playing a game actually in Michigan for the first time in 4 decades. It looked like a pretty good turn out to boot.

Birmingham win back-to-back USFL titles. I count it as 1 1/2 titles since last season everyone played games on their home field in the regular season. Unfair advantage to them. This year was a bit more fair but still not 100%.

Axios is reporting the USFL is in "advanced" talks with the XFL to merge the two spring leagues. I'm curious if they'd stick with the USFL's rotating model or XFL's hub and spoke model for game sites, as well as how they'd resolve the rules differences between the leagues, but consolidation would be good for fans because of the consolidation of the talent pool... And bad for players because of the reduced number of employers.

At this point it might be needed just to survive. I'll be curious to see which direction they go.

Players would only lose out if some teams folded. Offhand I am not sure if any cities have teams in both leagues but if so, they could relocate one. I thought the XFL was using the same model as the NFL in regard to home and away games. Either way, I think that is how they need to go if they merge. As for losers in a merger it would be front office people for the leagues as some will get cut to avoid redundancies.

The XFL used traditional home and away, yes, but all practices, practices, training, office personnel, meetings, etc for all teams were based in the Ft Worth Texas area. Teams would travel to their “home” cities only for the games. Hence the hub and spoke analogy.
