Hi
I was just curious. Not an important question, just something I wondered about:
When Man-Mountain and Lightning first debuted (first printing), Lightning's name was spelled "Lightening", as in "lightening the load". For the Re-Imagining, his name was Lightning, as in "thunder and lightning".
I was just curious why the slight name change, and why it was spelled that way in the first place? I'm thinking it was probably copyright issues somehow, or maybe a misprint originally...

Not sure about the OG spelling, but I used LIGHTNING for the new set and Tom liked it.
So we went w it.

Most people always thought it was Lightning anyway. I kind of looked at it like name play off of the opposite aspects of the team. Like Mountain is heavy and the other guy is Lightening. It's a little silly, but that was how I explained it in my head. When I split up the team (AKA lost my Man-Mountain card) I'm fairly sure I changed the spelling as well.

Crazy thing about this is Lightening was a grammar breakthrough to me as I thought, because of the card it was the 'thunder and lightning' spelling and usage. So in junior high as I remember using the spelling lightening in an English paper in the late 80s and got a red mark for it and was very confused until I looked it up in the dictionary and learned the alt versions of the spelling.
It taught me my first 'Don't assume the grammar & usage is 100% what you think' in anything published.

Fun story there. I always thought this game greatly helped build my vocabulary too. As a kid I was always look up names of guys I didn’t recognize (like Dreadnaught).
I kind of assumed Lightening was Tom just using alternate spelling for him like he does with many others, especially during the early sets.

Maybe Mr Filsinger did this to make his product be different than any generic game? Note the spelling of "At-Las" instead of "Atlas". This makes it more memorable than just a generic-sounding "Atlas". Names like THANTOS instead of Thanatos, and Krakan instead of Kraken, and unique names as well (Unman, Darkos, Exo-King, etc). So Lightening instead of Lightning to separate the generic game from Mr Filsinger's! Todd C WTIC

Keeping with the spelling/naming why is it Blacklash instead of Backlash? My guess is a mispronunciation led to a misspelling but if anyone has the inside scoop I would love to hear it.

Well, we got Whiplash in Champions Of The Galaxy, which is a name also later used by Blacklash in Marvel comics. I suppose it was because he had a whip and he wore black....making it a play on the word "backlash".
