NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS
CURT HENNIG def. Rob Van Dam via pinfall after a HENNIG PLEX. -- Tokens: Hennig 3 - RVD 5
-- Lots of quick reversals and high impact moves kept the action moving. A very exciting match to kick off the inaugural event of a brand new promotion!
KONNAN & U.S. EXPRESS (Barry Windham & Mike Rotunda) def. Vampiro & Quebecers (Pierre Carl Ouellet & Jacques Rougeau w/ Jimmy Hart) via pinfall when Rotunda pinned Ouellet after an elbow drop. -- Tokens: n/a
-- Flawless teamwork by the U.S. Express resulted in a flash finish. Hart claimed it was a fast count by the referee, but his protests were ignored. Konnan and Vampiro were too busy brawling out on the floor to get involved in the match itself.
-- Gordon Solie conducted a post-match interview with the Quebecers and their manager, Jimmy Hart. They became irritated by the questions being asked and started making threats. The U.S. Express intervened, leading to a wild brawl! Security was needed to pull them apart and a match between the two teams was scheduled for the next card!
DANNY HODGE def. Antonino Rocca via DQ to retain the LWGP Catch Class Championship. Rocca was disqualified <lv> when he smashed Hodge through a ringside table. -- Tokens: Hodge 1 - Rocca 3
-- Hodge tried to gain the upper hand by jumping Rocca before Gary Michael Cappetta had completed the introductions. Rocca countered the attack and sent Hodge crashing into a corner post! <Rocca started on Level 3 Offense.>
-- This was a successful version one title defense. Rocca was frustrated by Hodge's attempt to take a shortcut and the referee did not agree with his brand of retaliation.
NICK BOCKWINKEL (w/ Bobby Heenan) def. Jack Brisco via DQ <outside interference> when Jerry Brisco attacked Bockwinkel to break up a near fall. Brisco retained the LWGP United Open Championship due to a technical decision. -- Tokens: Brisco 3
-- It was instantly apparent that Brisco was not going to receive a fair fight with Heenan at ringside. Jerry Brisco rushed the ring to level the playing field and his enthusiasm wound up costing his brother the match.
ROAD WARRIORS (Hawk & Animal w/ Paul Ellering) def. Foreign Legion (Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff w/ Rock Riddle) to retain the LWGP World Tag Team Championship. Hawk pinned Volkoff after teaming with Animal for a DOOMSDAY DEVICE. -- Tokens: Hawk 4 - Volkoff 1
-- This was a successful version one title defense. The Legion managed to cause some damage by double teaming Hawk into a corner. Hawk fought his way out of trouble to make a much needed tag and the champs wasted no time bringing this match to an abrupt end.
FABULOUS MOOLAH (w/ Lou Albano) def. Mildred Burke to retain the LWGP World Women's Championship. Moolah pinned Burke with a SMALL PACKAGE. -- Tokens: Moolah 4 - Burke 4
- This was a successful version one title defense. Narrowly avoiding disqualification, Moolah employed a few dirty tricks to counter Burke's potent offense. Burke still nearly won the match, but interference by Albano bought Moolah enough time to recover.
RANDY SAVAGE (w/ Sherri Martel) def. Bobo Brazil to retain the LWGP World Heavyweight Championship. Savage pinned Brazil after a vaulting neck snap. -- Tokens: Savage 9 - Brazil 6
- Gordon Solie conducted a prematch interview with Bobo Brazil. He spoke with passion and was clearly fired up for this encounter. <Brazil started on Level 2 Offense.>
- This was a successful version one title defense. Brazil was in complete control, but constant involvement by Martel helped Savage remain in the fight. The blood was flowing and both men were exhausted by the time it was over. An absolutely brilliant match!
- Gordon Solie conducted a post-match interview with Randy Savage and his manager, Sherri Martel. They were interrupted by Brazil, who took exception to their arrogant remarks. Savage attacked, leading to a wild brawl! Martel offered an assist that allowed Savage to smash Brazil with the title belt! The beatdown continued until Lou Thesz arrived to make the save! <Brazil injured for 4 cards.>
