BLACKOUT!
In early 2138, a shockwave of unknown origin pulsed throughout the Milky Way galaxy, causing intermittent and sometimes significant blackouts throughout the galaxy. Fortunately, most systems have proved to be resilient, and life returned to normal fairly quickly. However, GWF databank systems on Earth and Mars have not been so lucky. All historical data was completely erased! Official statistics, win/loss records, rankings, and title histories are all gone. Given that both primary and backup systems on multiple planets were impacted suggest there may be an element of foul play involved. The investigation is ongoing.
Many historical events everyone agrees on. Who could forget Endgame’s dramatic comeback to beat Monolith and win the Galaxian Title at SuperClash 36 at New Texas Stadium? Or what about the series of Aethran Ultimate Escape matches during the Gladiator Civil War? Or the federation war with the CPC? Cordanius? The list goes on.
But memories diverge as well. Some insist Whiplash had a brief reign as Galaxian Champion in 2092. Others say he lost the one title shot he ever got that year. The Mandela effect, a phenomenon of incorrect memories on a mass scale first discovered on 21st century Earth, is coming into play with the absence of verifiable records.
Eventually, GWF officials decided to wipe the slate clean, at least for the time being. Restoration efforts on GWF databanks are ongoing and early returns have been fruitful, you can follow their progress here. In the meantime, GWF officials declared matches would resume in September (earth time), with GWF Card 1 AB (for After Blackout) to take place at Spica Pyramid on Virgo. A decision about what to do with existing GWF title holders has been postponed.
The modern GWF holds several long standing annual or intermittent tournaments:
1. Galaxia One- Formerly known as the Tournament of Planets, the Galaxia One is the GWF’s most prestigious tournament. The winner gets to set any match they want at the next major GWF event (see below for a breakdown of the “Big 4”). This could be anything, and the winner of the tournament does not even have to be a participant, they become promoter for a day! Very few proposed stipulations will be refused.
2. Crossfire Cup- Formerly the Galaxian Tag League, this tournament was renamed in the early 22nd century after Crossfire was tragically killed in a match with Blazing Skull. The knockout portion of the Crossfire Cup is determined at Genesis and the winner receives a shot at the Galaxian Tag Team Titles.
3. GWF Cup- The secondary singles tournament in the GWF, it is contested over 2 nights at Genesis, with the winner receiving a certificate to challenge for any GWF sanctioned title, requiring only 2 earth weeks notice before it’s use.
4. Cosmic Cruiserweight Classic- Sporadic single-elimination tournament featuring top junior heavyweights from all over the galaxy. This tournament had a number of memorable editions in the late 2090’s and early 2100’s.
5. Worlds Cup- Held once every 2 to 4 years, the Worlds Cup matches 1 wrester from each of 16 different worlds. It is held in a round robin format to determine the last 8, which then becomes a single elimination competition. Prizes for winning this competition vary with each edition.
The GWF runs between 24-36 cards most years, with at least 4 major events marking the calendar:
1. SuperClash- Dating back to 2087, SuperClash is GWF’s crown jewel. Having just completed its 52nd edition, it has become the most watched annual event in the Galaxy for decades. GWF co-founder Omega once said “SuperClash is where the dream matches are held”. It is held early in the GWF calendar, and has been host to many spectacular moments in GWF history. Originally named Demios SuperClash (and briefly CPC SuperClash), this event now travels the galaxy as systems bid against each other to land this extravaganza.
2. Genesis- Formerly known as Triple Card, the event was shortened from 3 nights to 2 and is where the GWF Cup and the finals of the Crossfire Cup take place. Many memorable debuts and turns have happened at Genesis, reflective of why it’s name was changed.
3. Bloodsport- Another GWF event with a 50+ year history now being recovered, BloodSport is where the scores are settled. Every match is a specialty match, and every competitor knows the risks. This card is usually held on places like Aethra and Brymstone.
4. SIMPLY THE BEST- The GWF has seen many eras and arcs in it history, and SIMPLY THE BEST was created as a way to capture that essence. The format changes as does the GWF, and will see a tagline in it’s name to reflect that. For example, SIMPLY THE BEST: Civil War 2099 featured Aethran Ultimate Escape matches up and down the card. SIMPLY THE BEST: Takeover 2112 saw control of the GWF put on the line in it’s main event! What will SIMPLY THE BEST: Origins 2139 have in store? We’ll have to wait and see!
