LOW American Wrestling Enterprise - Joe Louis Arena - Detroit, MI (Card #815)
1) Midnight Rockers defeated Iron Mike Dibiase & Adam Pearce:
The opening match saw the popular team of the Midnight Rockers (Stan Lane & Marty Jannetty) take on Iron Mike Dibiase & “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce, the former returning after a short absence and the latter making his AWE debut after being signed as a free agent. Dibiase and Pearce had trouble keeping up with the fast paced style of the Rockers but almost came away with the victory. That came after the Rockers hit the Rocket Launcher on Pearce but Dibiase made the save. He dropped an elbow on Jannetty and rolled Pearce over on top of him for a two count. Pearce put in a good showing but made a fatal mistake coming up short on a dropkick allowing Jannetty to deliver a Running Knee Lift to score the pin as Lane cut off a save attempt by Dibiase.
2) The Crusher defeated Timber:
The roof just about blew off of the Joe Louis Arena as The Crusher made his long awaited return to the AWE going against Timber, “The Insane Lumberjack”, who has signed with LOW All-Star Wrestling after leaving the SWA. The Crusher has been gone from the AWE for over two years competing as a free agent but is back home after signing a lucrative contract with the promotion. Timber tried to spoil his return but The Crusher pretty much dominated this one. It ended when The Crusher was able to trap Timber in a powerful Bearhug resulting in a submission victory. The Crusher grabbed the mic post-match and led the crowd in a victory chant saying that it was great to be back in the AWE where he belongs.
3) Angelo Poffo defeated Jim Brunzell:
The popular Jumpin’ Jim Brunzell took on “The Miser” Angelo Poffo, accompanied by Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, in a grudge match. Poffo assaulted Brunzell after his match on the last AWE card angry over the fact that Brunzell got a shot at the LOW Junior Heavyweight title over him. It was give and take early before Poffo was able to counter a corner whip with a running lariat. Poffo took over on offense as a smiling Heenan took verbal jabs at ringsiders. They responded by chanting “weasel” at the veteran manager. It was another counter that Poffo that ended this bout as he struck with a back body drop followed by a Knee Lift to score the pin.
4) John & Chris Tolos defeated Larry Zbyszko & John Pesek:
The recent tension brewing between Larry Zbyszko and his partner and bodyguard John Pesek reached a boiling point as they were set to take on the dangerous duo of John & Chris Tolos, the Hamilton Wrecking Crew. As the bell sounded it was Zbyszko intending to start the match but instead he left the ring and was joined by none other than Bobby “The Brain” Heenan at ringside. Pesek questioned what was going on but Zbyszko and Heenan walked off as the Tolos Brothers jumped him. It was now a handicap match and Pesek was put at a serious disadvantage. Despite the odds he almost picked up a win with a near fall on a corner roll up and a submission chance with the Double Wristlock. In the end it was a bloody Pesek going down in defeat as John pinned him after hitting the Flying Knee Drop. The crowd supported the defeated Pesek cheering him on post-match as he refused assistance from the referee and left the ring under his own power.
●Manager Bobby Heenan was ecstatic backstage announcing to local reporters that he had signed Larry Zbyszko to an exclusive contract to join the Heenan Family. He said that they played John Pesek “for a fool’ and that Zbyszko was done with carrying “dead weight”. Zbyszko was unavailable for comment but Heenan said that he is proud to have him as a member of the Heenan Family which also includes Rick Rude, Angelo Poffo, and the Valiant Brothers. He said that Zbyszko is a great talent and that he was being “anchored down” by having to “carry” Pesek all these years having been reminded by the reporters that the two teamed for some six years in LOW. It was a moment of great joy for Heenan who proclaimed that an already great night would end with the LOW World tag team titles coming to the Heenan Family.
5) Rick Rude defeated Mikey Whipwreck:
With Bobby Heenan occupied elsewhere, new Heenan Family member “Ravishing” Rick Rude was joined by “The Miser” Angelo Poffo for this match against Mikey Whipwreck. The referee warned Poffo that any interference by him would not be tolerated. Whipwreck looked great early keeping the stronger Rude on the defensive including hitting a slingshot neck snap and tornado DDT for a near fall. Rude battled back and picked up a pair of near falls with the piledriver and suplex. He almost won it by count out after laying Whipwreck out with the Rude Awakening on the floor but he managed to crawl back in just in time. Whipwreck was in a bad way but he kept fight forcing Rude to rethink his strategy. The turning point came when the referee went down after being hit on a top rope dive from Whipwreck. Rude got the upper hand and would ultimately win this one when he nailed Whipwreck with a Top Rope Sledgehammer to score the pin.
6) William Muldoon, Dan Severn, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, & Yukon Eric defeated King Kong Bundy, Bill Dundee, Mad Dog Vachon, & Butcher Vachon:
Eight-man tag team action saw the foursome of “The Solid Man” William Muldoon, Dan “The Beast” Severn, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, & Yukon Eric battle the Jimmy Hart-led First Family team of King Kong Bundy, “Superstar” Bill Dundee, Mad Dog Vachon, & Butcher Vachon. Hart was at his best in this one leading his men into battle hoping to secure a big victory. Bundy used his monstrous size to control the early action but then Muldoon surprised him by taking the 446-pounder over with a suplex. He also trapped Bundy in the double shoulder lock looking to score a submission. Dundee was tagged in and scored a quick near fall on Muldoon with a counter sunset flip. Severn would tag in a short time later and went at it with Dundee continuing their heated rivalry. Duggan, Eric, Mad Dog, and Butcher all looked good during their time in as the match built to an intense finish. After a collision out of the corner it was Severn recovering first and trapping Dundee in the Wakigatame for the submission victory as Muldoon, Duggan, and Eric fended off the other First Family members.
7) Mil Mascaras defeated The Terrible Turk:
Legendary seven-time LOW World Heavyweight champion Mil Mascaras, the “Man of 1,000 Masks”, made a special appearance in the AWE to take on the feared fighter out of Shumia, Turkey, known as The Terrible Turk (Youssuf Ishmaelo). Mascaras dazzled The Turk early with his unique brand of offense including coming off of the top rope with his Flying Bodypress for a big near fall. The Turk impressively kicked out of a move that has put away many top opponents and then battled back shaking up Mascaras with the falling bodyslam. Late in the bout it was The Turk in control as he trapped Mascaras in a headlock. Mascaras impressively countered out of it and maneuvered around The Turk trapping him in the Octopus Hold. The Turk tried to fight out of it but Mascaras cinched the punishing hold on and that led to him getting the victory via submission. It was an impressive win for Mascaras and the freelance star received a great ovation from the crowd afterward.
8) LOW World tag team titles – No DQ Match: Valiant Brothers defeated Fabulous Kangaroos to win the titles:
The main event was a rematch with the Fabulous Kangaroos (Al Costello & Roy Heffernan, with Wild Red Berry) defending the LOW World tag team titles against the Valiant Brothers (Jimmy “Boogie Woogie Man” Valiant & “Luscious” Johnny Valiant, with Bobby “The Brain” Heenan). This was a No DQ Match set up due to the Valiant Brothers holding two disqualification victories over the Kangaroos in previous championship matches. Heenan was looking to cap off a big night by bringing championship gold to the Heenan Family but Berry and his men were prepared to defend them. Early action was fast, furious and intense as both teams laid it all on the line bending the rules at every turn in hopes of getting the win. Jimmy trapped Costello in the Sleeper Hold and had him going under when Heffernan made the save hitting him with the boomerang. The weapon shot allowed Costello to recover and drop on top of Jimmy for a big near fall. The Kangaroos followed up with the body block catapult and Berry also interfered drawing the ire of Heenan. The Valiant Brothers battled back and it was “Luscious” Johnny choking out Heffernan with the tag rope which led to a wind-up elbowdrop by Jimmy for a near fall. The crowd was at a fever pitch as this one neared the finish which saw a bloody Jimmy survive the Greek Cross executed by Costello before again trapping him in the Sleeper Hold. Heenan decked Berry from behind on the outside while Johnny caught Heffernan with a body tackle preventing a save. Moments later it was Costello going under in the Sleeper Hold and Jimmy got the victory via submission. History was made in Detroit as the Valiant Brothers were crowned the new LOW World tag team champions. Heenan was overjoyed as he grabbed the title belts from the referee and handed them to his men who captured the belts for the first time.
