Tough question. Probably stats. Bad artwork can drive down enthusiasm for a card though, especially if it's a mid-card wrestler.

I think artwork goes along way sad to say ... there are some guys I just can't get into because of the art, while others I will keep around just because of the art (Maxine Babe is the only example I can think of right now for some reason) I kinda agree on that one. I know I lean towards art because I am an artist, and there are a few characters out there when I first saw the artwork for the very first time I was like who the heck would want to use that character! But I also understand that the stats and the storyline does make a difference overall. You could have an awesome looking character but if the stats stink then he could become a bum. So if you are trying to win and are playing by the COTG rules go with the stats. If you want to make your own rules and modify stats than go with the art.

While all of these can be argued for (and rightfully so), I chose art.
Character backstory is open for interpretation or total reimagining.
Stats can be tweaked or manipulated if you choose. Same goes for Finishers and their descriptions.
Art is there staring you in the face all the time and it creates that first point of reference when you think of a guy by name.

Good art always makes the card better and can definitely swing me to use a guy more than bad artwork. The one thing that I think everyone can agree upon - the more new official cards that come out the better! The more characters for all the different editions is always the best part. I would LOVE to see more early classics. Those are some of my all-time favorites and I would love to see even more. Sorry to go off topic, but I felt it needed to be said.

Card back design 99% of the time.
The only time art becomes more important is when it shouldn't.
Sure you can be greatly inspired by awesome artwork, but at the end of the day, it is the stats that truly make or break what can be done with the character.
However, when the card art moves into the bad realm, at that point the poorness of the art can override your creativity in other areas. Essentially, it doesn't matter what the stats are, you have such a poor vision of the guy in your head that it can block everything else.
Not to say that art doesn't matter. It does. A lot. But for me, most of the time it is more important that the art not be noticably horrendous than it be a home run out of the park awesome.

There have been some clunker drawings over the years, but I can honestly say that to the best of my recollection, I never booked my fed differently based on my opinion of the artwork. It was always outcomes of matches, which is of course driven by the stats.

There's no easy answer here for me. The back story sets the tone for the way a character will be written for and played. The card back design is what the game is all about. But I have a real hard time getting motivated to use a character with bad artwork, so I know artwork is important, too.
Take Pulsar, for example. When he got the upgrade to Pulsar Prime he became a favorite of mine. He had a good drawing, an established story, and a great card back. He ended up as a main eventer and pivotal guy in my fed.
Then he got the updated card with the horrible close-up drawing of that paranoid looking guy with the eye patch and he went from being one of my favorite characters to use to just another character I put in the middle of the card when I needed to fill a match. I never looked at him as being the same character again.
Bottom line: I vote for artwork.

I gotta say art. Granted, most of us are immersed in the storylines and characters once we started playing, but when you see an ad (like I saw back in the late 80s, the old Warrior in a mask, Krakan with smooth head)....
...you know nothing about the game except the artwork. You are rolling the dice (literally) because this could have ended up with the boring, no flow, Superstar game that used to be out (the one with the real wrestlers).
I took a chance because I really liked the artwork. I ended up liking everything else after I got the game. But if it wasn't for the art work to see, I may not have taken the chance.
I posted this a few days ago, but if I saw some of Bendis' art (or God forbid, Gustovich) in an introductory ad, I seriously doubt I would have bought the game. It would have looked along the lines of the infamous Wrestlewar crap.
But seeing Carter (at his peak), Snelly, Banks, King and Su (before he got sloppy and too anime) in an introductory ad..I wouldn't have hesitated to snap up the game because the vast majority of their stuff looks impressive.

Stats - stats - stats...a million times, stats.
If that card design is sloppy, broken, unrealistic, overpowered, underpowered, whatever...that is THE killer, IMHO.
I can get around a rough picture if the card plays well...but if a card is very pretty and has absolutely horrendous card design? Ew.

Speaking of a certain card and artwork ... the first Indigo is one of my favorite drawings of all time but the stats suck. The second Indigo stats are good but the drawing sucks so I am thinking about pasting the original artwork onto the new card ... am I allowed to do that?
