It is possible the Lions could have had Jalen Ramsey for our 3rd round pick and a TE. UGH. Granted him might prefer to play for Miami than the Lions but still.

Tomorrow March madness begins. No, not that basketball tournament. NFL free agency. My hope for the Lions is they sign a solid to great player at all three levels of the defense and they resign Williams. If they can do that I will consider the FA period a success and be really excited going into the draft.

Lions have made the first signing of the FA period I am not too keen on. They signed David Montgomery to a 3-year deal worth $18M with $11M guaranteed. I have no problem with the player per say especially as it seems they might move on from Swift and not sure if Williams will resign. However, the length and money seem high for a guy that has only been average. I mean, who knows, maybe with our offense especially our O-Line we might see him really shine. But his yards per rush average has only been decent in one season. I am not expecting too much from him.

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jamaal Williams is leaving the Lions. He signed with the Saints which is bad enough. But he signed for LESS then we signed Montgomery for. Like 2/3. We signed Montgomery for 3 year, $18M while Williams signs with the Saints for 3 year, $12M. I can only guess he did not want to come back for some reason. I mean, the only advantage Montgomery has is he is a whole year younger. That is it. Just when I think the Lions front office is FINALLY getting their act together, this happens.

It was being reported a couple days ago that Philly would be releasing Darius Slay. I was thinking the Lions should see about bringing him back. However the Eagles did not release him and instead signed him to an extension. Oh well.
By the way, anyone still upset about us trading him need to remember we have Jonah Jackson and Quintez Cephus out of that trade. A really good young guard and a WR that showed some promise early but has seemed to fade since his rookie year.

I saw that this was the first time the Bears had the top overall pick since 1947. Now, they traded it because it was a great deal and they do not need a QB. But there might be another reason. I was curious and checked who they took with the top pick back then. It was a running back that only played in 10 games his rookie year and was out of the NFL after that. They might have been worried about a Bob Fenimore curse.

With the bulk and early rush of FA season over I give the Lions a grade of B-
They got some help in the secondary and they resigned some young talent that could be on the rise. I think the team sees that a guy familiar with the system is equal to or better than a guy with a bit more talent but who is not familiar with the system. Plus we got most of them at a fair price. No overspending with one exception. I think we over paid for Montgomery. I still am not sure what the thought process was here. You let Williams, a popular player, walk for less than what we paid Montgomery. The only thing I can think is they, like I did in the past, see Williams as more a RB2 who was able to shine thanks to our O-line in his 2nd season with us. They, like I do, may see Montgomery more as a low end RB1 and think with this line he can really bust out. If so, he could be more valuable than Williams and it will end up being the right decision. Only time will tell of course. I think they may still get some help for the defense as a few good names are still not signed. As far as guys we lost, other than Williams none really leave a big hole and we filled those departures. So, it is time to focus on the draft in just under 6 weeks. It seems like we will still focus on D. I would like one of the top CBs and someone in the front seven. I would not have an issue with Bijan Robinson, the Texas RB, if taken at 18. I have seen some talk of offensive help and while you can never have too much I would prefer bulking up the D. Also, later in the draft if they went after Jack Moody, the K from Michigan, I would be cool with that.

The Bears fans (via their Reddit page) are pissed they lost Montgomery. I see that as a win. Would've rather kept Williams though but trying to see the bright side.
Same thing with Steelers and Cam Sutton.

It looks like the Lions signed C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the S from the Eagles, to a 1 year deal. That is sweet. He is one of the guys still out there I was thinking they should go after. He will help in the bulking up of our secondary that has already been going on. I still would like to see them go after one of the top CB with pick 6 but any defensive player will be fine. With this signing I bump my grade to a solid B for the FA period.

It's official. We lost DJ Chark. He signed with Panthers. Not a great loss but I would have liked to see him stay. Maybe we just have too many mouths to feed in the WR room. Hopefully Williams busts out this year.
