Does anyone here have a ferret?
if so, how are they for pets?
And, since I have a cat, do ferrets generally get along with cats?
And, are ferrets as self-sufficient as cats or are they more like dogs? (for example if I leave for a day to go to PWG or somewhere I just leave out enough food and water for my cat who also has her litter box and she is good to go until I get back.)
I have been thinking of getting a ferret for years and Bazzy just posted something on Facebook about them that made me think about it again. I really don't understand why ferrets are illegal in California and some other states (but they are legal here in Nevada.)

Ferrets are illegal in Calfornia because they are a threat to wildlife and agriculture.

Ferrets smell awful. They are filthy creatures and will stink up your environment. Ideally they should also be kept in a large multi-tiered cage so they can climb around, but I'm told they'll destroy everything in site if left out on their own (through a combination of chewing and just generally leaving a horrid stench). I would personally never own one, but they're a lot of fun to watch. I've known several people who have owned them and I think they're best enjoyed in a visitor capacity.

Ferrets are illegal in Calfornia because they are a threat to wildlife and agriculture. Yeah, I know that is the stated reason. But I still don't understand it. Are ferrets really much more of a threat to wildlife than cats? For example, while my current cat Candice always stays inside here in Las Vegas, when I lived in Seattle I had a cat who liked to hunt and went out and killed alot of rodents and birds in the backyard. I think cats by their nature are generally avid hunters yet California does not ban cats. Why are ferrets different? Is it really some idiotic fear of ferrets causing widespread disease or something?

Had a ferret in college, briefly, in my fraternity house. Yes. They stink. So be prepared for a lot of maintenance. They can be a lot if fun but mine whined at night because he wanted attention. I gave him to the guy across the hall who built a big area for him to party it up and he took that thing everywhere.
Don't have first hand knowledge but I'm pretty sure the ferret would have noe problem with your cat but the cat would try to kill it.

good find. the article which says there has only been "a grand total of 12-14 cases of rabid ferrets over a period of 300 years" further leads to believe that California's ban on ferrets is asinine.

Oh, perhaps I better not get one then as I have a cat who truly can be really ferocious (I think because her previous owner was a jerk who abandoned her on the street when she was a kitten.) She is a great cat and is cool with me but, for example, whenever she has to go to the vet for shots or a periodic checkup they really have to call in most of the staff to hold her down just so they can examine her. ;D Even then the vet usually gets scratched. Ferrets really seem like fun animals to own, but I just was not sure how well they interacted with other types of pets and how well other types of pets interacted with them.

Ferrets are illegal in CA because they find a way to make basically everything illegal in CA.
