I have been running theme PPVs in my feds for a while, but tend to stick to an everyother PPV format for those themes. So one PPV I have a standard mix of matches, then the next is a theme (usually a tournament...shocking I know), then back to a standard, then a different theme. I try to keep different themes for all the different feds. But I have trimmed down my number of feds and have taken some favorite concepts from defunct feds and moved them to my remaining feds.
In real life I think doing something similar would work pretty well. Although I think the E's plan is more 2 theme PPVs for every standard one.

I read today that the WWE is introducing 2 new theme PPVs:
Fatal Four Way
and
WWE Wild Card
Right now, I'm not sure if I'm going to use Fatal Four Way asa PPV in my fed and I'll have to see what WWE Wildcard is before deciding whether or not to do a PPV called MLW Wildcard.

Wild card sounds interesting. That could be a really fun one once we figure out what it is. Just the name sounds fun to me

Initial reports are saying that Wild Card will be Battle Bowl, which if true, would be RAD. They're also introducing WWE Money in the Bank in July. *cringe* EDIT: Just read on Observer that Wild Card is going to be in Detroit. Might actually take the trip and risk being shot to go to that show.

I don't run PPVs, but just ran my annual Tag Wars in Cove Championship Wrestling (CCW). Obviously the theme was that ever match was a tag team match. Nothing to earth-shattering, but always fun.

My problem with themed PPVs, and it may have already been covered, is that instead of blowing off a feud in an awesome way that's built around the characters and angles involved, they force you to book toward specific gimmick matches.
I suppose it depends on your booking style, but I can't see myself doing more than two themed events in a year.

Tonight I sketched out this tentative new PPV schedule for my fed (PPV Weekend= each of my 3 brands presenting its own version of that themed PPV on a different day from Friday through Sunday for that weekend): early MaySammartino Invitational (annual 64 tag team tournament) JuneNight of Champions AugustSummerslam early-mid OctoberHell in a Cell (Pay Per View Weekend) November Survivor Series DecemberTables, Ladders, and Chairs (Pay Per View Weekend) JanuaryRoyal Rumble FebruaryElimination Chamber (Pay Per View Weekend) late MarchWrestlemania I might also add another Pay Per View Weekend such as Breaking Point or something else to fill in one or more of the gaps. I think somewhere in that tentative schedule I posted I'm going to add War Games as another Pay Per View Weekend theme.

You guys made some really great points about the problems of using Hell in a Cell matches as a theme PPV and I decided to drop Hell in a Cell as one of my themed PPVs.
That way I feel free to just have Hell in a Cell matches whenever it seems appropriate for them (the end of major feuds) and not at an automatic scheduled time each game year.
I also thought about dropping Tables, Ladders, and Chairs as a PPV because I didn't want to limit myself to only having something like a ladder match once a year and instead have a ladder match whenever it seemed appropriate- but then I decided to keep that PPV with the reasoning that Tables, Ladders, and Chairs can still be special in the sense that it's the only weekend of the year where there will be tables matches, ladder matches, chairs matches, and TLC matches all on the same PPVs. I think they are good matches as part on going feuds and so Tables, Ladders, and Chairs should work well as a themed PPV event.
But I am not sure what I will replace Hell in a Cell with as my October PPV Weekend.
Updated list of my PPV schedule:
early May Sammartino Invitational (annual 64 tag team tournament)
June War Games (Pay Per View Weekend)
July Fatal Fourway (Pay Per View Weekend) August Summerslam
September don't know
early-mid October don't know
November Survivor Series
December Tables, Ladders, and Chairs (Pay Per View Weekend)
January Royal Rumble
February Elimination Chamber (Pay Per View Weekend)
late March Wrestlemania
April don't know
for the 3 "don't know" months some possibilities I am thinking of doing include Money in the Bank
