@crimson Cross – glad you enjoyed the tournament. DiPaolo winning the whole thing was fun and unexpected.
cruefan68 – Rikidozan v. Severn was awesome to play out and I look forward to booking them against each other again sometime down the road.
FCC 13 – Anniversary 3 – Fair Park Arena, Birmingham
Round One
Jim Londos v. Dick Hutton
Former FCC Champion was out to prove he still belongs at the top when he stepped into the ring with FCC 12 winner the always popular Jim Londos. However, the cloud of controversy continues to surround Hutton who got off to a strong start. Londos once again showed he was difficult to put away as he survived an ABDOMINAL STRETCH to make his own comeback. Hutton showed some resiliency as well making the ropes to break a BOSTON CRAB. Hutton makes use of a series of powerbombs (ch) that really take a lot out of his opponent. The match goes to the floor several times and the two end up brawling on apron. Londos ducks a punch and backdrops Hutton into the ring just as the referee finishes the ten count. Londos has been counted out and Hutton advances to the next round. **
Bruiser Brody v. Killer Kowalski (LE)
The fans were braced for impact as these two giants collided in the opening round. Brody has one direction and that is forward. He brawled his way into control of the action and nearly ended with a JUMPING KNEE DROP. Kowalski battled back landing a pair of bombs away knee drops before trapping Brody in a KOWALSKI CLAW. Brody made the ropes and the action continued. Brody rocked the fans with his one hand slams while Kowalski got a huge reaction from a giant swing that bounced Brody off the mat. Brody landed a second JUMPING KNEE DROP but could not get the three count. Kowalski came back including an overhead toss. Brody regained control but Kowalski counted a deathjump with a boot to the face and then immediately applied a KOWALSKI CLAW. With nowhere to go, Brody blacked out and Kowalski advances to the semi-finals. *** ½
Mil Mascaras v. Dan “The Beast” Severn”
Both these competitors know what it takes to win one of these tournaments. A handshake gets the action underway. The counter wrestling in this one was flawless from both men as the action when back and forth from start to finish. Severn gained some momentum mid-way through the contest but could not get the submission with a WAKIGATAME. Mascaras came back and tied up Severn win an octopus hold for near submission of his own. Neither man could gain an advantage for any length of time before the momentum turned against them. Frustration began to set in and the action went to the floor where Severn got the best of his masked opponent. Back inside, Mascaras fired back with a slingshot plancha that the fans ate up. Severn reversed a whip to the corner and caught Mascaras with a shoulder tackle. Severn then applied a choke sleeper in the middle of the ring. Mascaras had no counter this time had Severn moved one step closer to another FCC Title shot. *****
Bobo Brazil v. The Sheik
So much history. Promoters could not believe their luck when the opening round seeding put these two head to head for the second time this season. The action showcases Brazil’s power early on and the goes for the quick win with a COCO BUTT after a Bobo body slam but can only get a two count. The action does not stay in the ring for long and both men brawl at ringside. Sheik gets control and runs Brazil into the ring rails busting him open. Sheik then uses a FIREBALL earning himself a disqualification. The fans are shocked and luckily Brazil was able to avoid being serious injured. Brazil and Sheik brawl their way to the back with the fans cheering each blow Brazil landed. * ½
Flying Red Heads (Red Bastien & Billy “Red” Lyons) v. Iron Mike DiBiase & Bob Orton Sr.
This had the makings of a classic but ended much too quickly for the fans liking. Orton battled both Bastien and Lyons at a solid pace before Lyons became tangled in the ropes. Orton refuses to release his opponent and when the referee stepped in, Orton shoved him to the mat for the disqualification finish. Dud.
Sherri Martel v. Ida Mae Martinez
The last two these two ladies collided they nearly stole the show and the fans were hoping for that same action tonight. Martinez took over control of the bout early on and picked up a two count after a DROPKICK. Martel uses her power to battle back and dominated most of the action. Martinez did get in her moments however. At one point Martinez countered a backdrop with a piledriver and then followed up with a DROPKICK but Martel kicked out at the last second. It was another reversal that lead to the finish as Martinez countered a double knee lift and then put Martel to the mat with a flying head scissors for the win. * ½
Semi-Finals
Dick Hutton v. Killer Kowalski (LE)
Kowalski jumps Hutton at ringside during the introductions by Gary Michael Cappetta and runs Hutton into the ringpost. A bloodies Hutton is able to somehow recover quickly and batters Kowalski in a rage. Hutton cracks Kowalski with a chair shot on the floor and moments later, Kowalski gets trapped in the ropes. Hutton snaps and unleashes a brutal assault on his helpless opponent. The referee steps in but gets tossed to the mat. Hutton has lost it and the referee makes the disqualification. Hutton’s frustration since winning the FCC Championship have appeared to gotten the best of him. * ½
Dan Severn v. Bobo Brazil
A handshake gets the action underway. Brazil is able to make use of his slight size advantage early on which makes Severn’s German suplex that much more impressive looking. Brazil comes back with a big hammer punch and the traps Severn in a bearhug. A simple move but effective. Severn is reeling and Brazil capitalizes with a COCO BUTT to move onto the finals. *
FCC Title Match – Rikidozan v. Ilio DiPaolo
A handshake gets this match underway. Many were shocked by DiPaolo’s performance last card that saw him come away with the improbable victory, however it was clear that DiPaolo was going to make the most of his opportunity. DiPaolo really battled hard and gained the upper hand early and often. Rikidozan almost fell to a running head ram into the buckle and then later DiPaolo hoisted him into an AIRPLANE SPIN for a 2 ½ count. Rikidozan was finally able to slow the attack of his challenger with a series of Boston Crabs that forced DiPaolo to grab the ropes to keep the match going. Rikidozan used his chops and DiPaolo countered with his fists as the action went back and forth. DiPaolo moved his attack to Rikidozan’s upper body with a rolling short arm scissors in an effort to neutralize the champions chops but it was not successful. Rikidozan picked up the come from behind win with THUNDEROUS CHOPS. The crowd gives both men a solid ovation after the match. ***
Finals
Bobo Brazil v. Killer Kowalski (LE)
It seems that whenever these two collide, it is something special regardless of what federation it happens in. Brazil started out strong and clearly had a game plan to make this match as short as possible. A bear hug really took a lot out of Kowalski before the action went to the floor. Brazil was not be denied tonight as he bodyslammed Kowalski at ringside and then took the match back to the ring. A well times COCO BUTT sealed the deal and gave Brazil another shot at the FCC Title at the next card. *
