For some time I have wanting to explore the idea of running a fed based on a UFC format. Not that I am huge fan of the UFC but I do watch MMA from time to time. However, I think the UFC’s history of running a few cards in the opening years and adding more events as the sport grew in popularity is a great fit for LOW. So here is the first of what I hope to be many cards in the Filsinger Combat Championship!
SEASON ONE
FCC 01 – The Beginning – McNichols Sports Arena, Denver Colorado
Round One
Nick Bockwinkel v. Killer Kowalski
A real solid opener to get things going. Kowalski size gives him the slight advantage early on. There is an excellent exchange where Kowalski goes for a press slam but Bockwinkel drops behind his opponent and locks on an abdominal stretch forcing Kowalski to the ropes. Kowalski makes excellent use of body scissors and arm bars to really grind away on Bockwinkel. Bockwinkel also has his moments in control and a piledriver gets him a 2 count. Bockwinkel hits a back suplex that sends Kowalski to the floor. Kowalski drags Bockwinkel to the floor and runs him shoulder first into the ring post. The referee calls for the disqualification and Bockwinkel moves onto the next round. After the bell, Bockwinkel is selling his shoulder. *** ½
Frank Gotch v. Jimmy Snuka
Snuka is a huge fan favorite and greets the fans at ringside for several minutes before stepping into the ring. Both men shake hands in a show of respect. While both men are quick the Superfly’s unorthodox style really gives Gotch fits early. A leap frog and chop drops Gotch to the mat before Snuka tosses Gotch to the floor. Gotch regains the ring but Snuka rocks the crowd with a perfect SUPLERFLY LEAP (5) to get the upset opening round win. * ½
Buddy Rogers v. Giant Baba
There is real international flavour to the next contest as both men participate in a brief Puroresu ceremony prior to the bell. A great contrast in styles plays out in this one. The Nature Boy is frustrated early by his opponent’s size advantage as Baba’s power allows him to counter all of Roger’s attack. However, Rogers is cagy enough not to allow Baba to get an offensive run of his own either. Rogers switches tactics and a series of forearms are an effective weapon. Back to back jumping knee drops get a two count as does a piledriver. Baba was not to be outdone and unleashed a series of Baba Chops that had the fans buzzing. In the end, Rogers proved why he is considered one of the best ever using a jumping knee smash to set up a FIGURE FOUR GRAPEVINE in the middle of the ring. Baba cannot reach the ropes and has no choice but to submit. ***
Bobo Brazil v. Johnny Valentine
Brazil is adored everywhere he competes gets a massive ovation from the fans at the Big Mac. The anticipation for his showdown was epic but the action failed to deliver as this one was over before it really started. Valentine’s forearms forced Brazil to the floor and Valentine rammed Brazil’s face into the ring rails busting him open. The referee called for the disqualification and the match was official over. However, the fight was not and both men exchanged heavy blows back to the dressing room. dud
Round Two
Nick Bockwinkel v. Jimmy Snuka
Once again the fans are on their feet for the Superfly as he makes his way to the ring. Bockwinkel is not all that impressed and simply goes to work. Snuka reverses a whip into the corner and connects with a shoulder tackle against the buckles. Consecutive backbreakers sends Bockwinkel to the floor. Bockwinkel drags Snuka outside and whips the Superfly shoulder first into the ring post and in a great twist of irony, Bockwinkel is disqualified for the same infraction that saw him advance in the opening round. Snuka is onto the finals! Dud
Buddy Rogers v. Bobo Brazil
The fans are on their feet for Brazil is head is bandaged up from his opening round match. Brazil unleashes a series of forearm early but Rogers is able to lands a jumping knee smash that sends the match to the floor. Both men trade blows on the floor but Rogers takes out Brazil’s leg with a chop block earning solid heat. Back inside Rogers applies a FIGURE FOUR GRAPEVINE but Brazil is able to power out rolling Rogers over. However, the Nature Boy goes back to the hold again and this time Rogers submits. * 1/2
Non Tournament Match
Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) v. Foreign Legion (Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff) w/Nikita Breznikov
The Warriors out to a huge ovation especially after the Sheik gets on the mic and really tells up what he thinks of America. The USA chants are off the charts. Hawk and Animal explode from the opening bell and beat the daylights out of both Sheik and Volkoff from bell to bell. Both Sheik and Volkoff takes a DOOMSDAY DEVICE but are saved by their partners from being pinned. Sheik gets back to back spike piledrivers for his trouble and the fans eat it up. The action goes to the floor where Animal and Sheik tear it up. Animal battering rams Sheik into the ring post and the referee has seen enough calling for the disqualification. The Warriors are not impressed and gives Breznikov a DOOMSDAY DEVICE post match much to the pleasure of the fans. ** ½
Tournament Finals
Buddy Rogers v. Jimmy Snuka
Once again Snuka is out to great ovation from the fans. Rogers turns up the heat with a pre-match strut and then both men go to work. Having already battled two other opponents, both men know the importance of a quick start in the finals and the action picks up almost immediately. Snuka scores with a series of chops, headbutts and a piledriver. Rogers knows a lot about the Superfly’s attack having managed him in the past and is able to counter with a shoulder tackle and series of forearms. A dropkick stuns Snuka and Rogers connects with a jumping knee drop that knocks the wind out of Snuka just long enough for the three count. The Nature Boy wins the FCC 01! *
