I really tried to like this show, but I just wasn't a big fan of it, with the exception of the last man standing match, and Sasha coming out to setup a possibly 3 way feud. I also did like how they have now brought the Owens/Zayn feud to the main roster. Here is hoping he is becoming a part of the main roster, and he and Owens can have a match at WrestleMania. I really did not like Triple H winning the rumble, and there are a few reasons for it.
At his age and the fact he is semi retired, he doesn't really make a believable champion to me. I know because of his history, he might to some, but at this stage in his career, it's not believable for me. Don't let that pop for him fool you, because I think that pop was more for him eliminating Roman, and because it was an Orlando crowd, maybe some respect for what he is doing with NXT. Which, people really need to get over this Roman thing, he has been working his ass off. But anyways, now going into your biggest event of the year, in a monster venue like Jerry-world, where you are going for a record crowd, you have Triple H in the main event?! I just don't buy it. Granted, I will still watch WrestleMania, and most people probably will too, because it's WrestleMania, but it won't be because of that, assuming Triple H vs Roman is still the plan. D But that's not the sole reason, I didn't like him winning.
They have done a piss poor job at building stars, and they had the chance to do that last night, and they didn't. That's what made the Rumble interesting for me going in, was that you had Roman putting the title on the line, so conceivably, anyone could have won the title. Realistically, they haven't done a good enough job building other assets to make it feel as if anyone could have won it. So why not use that opportunity to raise someone else up. I would have loved to have seen Dean win it, and I think fans are ready for it. Triple H elminiated Roman, so you still could have had that story going into WrestleMania, and have them face off without the title on the line. And also keep the feud going with Ambrose and Owens, and raise Owens up, and put him in a title match at WrestleMania against Ambrose. Point is, there were other routes they could have taken to shake things up, and maybe got fans interested again. Hell, they could have really shocked everyone, and put the belt on AJ! Not that I expected that, but it really would have created a major buzz. Just anything, other than putting the belt on Triple H.
Speaking of AJ, I'm sorry, but I think they wasted his debut a little. Don't get me wrong, I didn't expect him to come in and win the title, though it would have been a cool moment, but he could have been used so much better. I did love seeing him debut, and the fans obviously did too. And while he did last nearly a half hour, Other than a few moves here and there, he basically got beat up by the midcard most of the match. I would have like to have seen him last to near the end, maybe one of the last 4-6 guys, and have made him look like more of a threat, eliminating multiple guys, before going out. That way you already have him set up as a legit threat going forward. Or, they should have brought him out later in the rumble, like in the 20's. Of course that was just his debut, and you can't say yet going forward how things will go. I'll give it to them, that the announcers did put him over as a star, and it is hard to really show what you can do in a match like the rumble, but I really thought they could have done more with his debut. But we'll see how they follow up tonight.
I guess more so, my issues were with the creative end, and not so much the matches. Because overall, the matches, including the Rumble were good, except for that US Title match. And Braun Strowman is terrible too. Creative and Vince, mainly Vince, are really hurting the product right now, and part of me wants to see WrestleMania bomb somewhat, just so maybe he realizes he needs to take a step back, and change things up. But like most people, I won't turn away, or at least not completely. A lot of the times, Raw is just background noise for me, while I do other things. Hopefully, they eventually give me something interesting enough to get me to pay attention again.
