You definitely don't have to like it but my point is I don't think you like anything Cena does so maybe things that you see might be taken differently if you had a better feeling about him.
They should definitely NOT take Cena off for 8 months. That would be the worst thing they could do. He will not go heel. At least not anytime soon. So many people have been clamoring for that but I don't think it'd live up to the hype. Plus, he still does get a mixed reaction, nobody in wrestling has had that for the length of time he has. It's a perfect ticket selling machine, 1/2 the crowd buys tix to cheer him, the other 1/2 to boo him.
Plus you always need that babyface for the younger fans. Cena is by far the best one they've had since Hogan. I've been saying for a long time Cena is the present day Hogan.
Not sure if anyone that's on the roster could fill Cena's shoes in that top babyface spot. That might be the biggest reason why his character hasn't changed. I think he's more intriguing as a face anyways.
Good discussion about this. Really enjoying hearing the different viewpoints!

"You definitely don't have to like it but my point is I don't think you like anything Cena does so maybe things that you see might be taken differently if you had a better feeling about him." - Payback
Well, I cannot say that that is entirely true. I am tired of Cena. I respect Cena, and I am more torn about wanting Cena to go heel simply because so many kids love him and actually look up to him (including my 5 year old daughter and my 8 year old son). For him to turn heel, he would be "betraying" the little kids, and I am torn about that.
BUT....
having said that...I did enjoy Cena chasing The Miz for the title. I am always more into the face chasing the heel for the title. To me, that makes a more compelling story. Which leads me to not caring for Cena as champion for more than one reason (listed in my earlier post).
You said that Cena is the present day Hogan. I agree. But also remember the shockwaves caused by Hogan turning heel. That lead to a resurgence in wrestling that wasn't there for a number of years. Eventually, Cena, I think will need to be turned heel. It probably won't be the WWE that does it, or if they do, they will screw it up, but eventually, Cena will play himself out as his current fanbase grows up, just like with Hogan.
I still feel that Cena should take an extended time off. There may not be others that can completely fill his shoes, but there are some that can do the job while he is gone. Sheamus is one that comes to mind ( my 10 year old claims him as his favorite alongside Undertaker). I am sure there are others that they could mold into a top babyface. But, I sometimes feel that that is one of the major problems with the WWE. They sometimes don't seem to want to move on (and that is what I think ultimately led to the downfall of the WCW and the whole NWO angle...I know, different company, but still...). The WCW/NWO forced Vince to move on, and then the attitude era was born, which saved Vince's WWE. But then WCW stuck to the NWO for too long, and it turned into trash. It is the cycle. The problem, though, there isn't really another promotion that can kick Vince in the pants and force him to move on and take the risks that he needs to. (if that makes any sense at all?)
WWE has a great ticket in Cena. I do not dispute that. I just don't like it, sometimes....

Theoretical Question: Does anyone think that if John Cena turned heel, his reaction would be just as mixed? I would venture that a very vocal male portion of wrestling fans have been clamouring for Cena to turn heel for so long that they would start cheering him if he turned heel. Anyway, I pretty much agree with what Swarm said. In a way, Cena is a victim of his own in ring success. I fully understand people saying they hate John Cena the character, but if you don't think John Cena is a good "worker", I just can't help you. Cena in a way, cannot embrace one of the aspects that makes him unique: He has freakish gorilla strength and looks as though he could actually tear someones' arms off. He doesn't really often get to work like that though because he is so, so good at working from underneath. Really, if John Cena had no charisma whatsoever, he would still be employed because he can sell so well and time his comeback so well. Mynnotaur: Thanks for responding so candidly and lucidly, and I really like your points about wrestling history. All I can say is that we all know that this business is cyclical. It can always manage to catch lightning and ride it for all its worth

Filppin' stupid. What happened to "I'm the best" "No, I'M the best" "Up yours. let's fight for the belt."? This alcoholic stuff was NOT needed for this angle, expecially with masters of the craft like Punk & Jericho involved. Way to tank an angle.

Man, the Rock's schtick is so stale. Sing lame line, smile like an idiot, repeat. Thanks, Dwayne, you've made me like John Cena.

I was all set to plop down $60 so my wife and I could watch WM again this year (I was even going to request the next day off of work so I wouldn't have to worry about getting to sleep).
Instead we have a GM match I have zero interest in, UT/HHH with Michaels involved for no reason (If UT is still injured after a year, keep him off the card. Don't bother with Michaels!), two title matches that are being treated like undercard attractions, and Cena/Rock who are going out of their way to make sure I don't give a $%^# about either one of them!
Really? Really? Instead of, I don't know, showing the two of them training for the big match they spent a year promoting (not really), they instead have a sing-off?
And Punk/Jericho, who's the best match with an alcohol angle because we don't actualy want interest in this match now, do we?
I'm sure the two titles matches will kick *** no matter what stupid angles they air, but I'm not paying $60 for 2 matches. As of now, I'll pay $60 for an Airplane-Spinning Alpha Force (my least-favorite GWF wrestler of all time) before I get WM this year.
