After reading Richards interview I wonder if he's forgotten that pro wrestling is booked. I know he's into the MMA style but in the end bookers do what they think will make money.
Steen was getting a huge response chasing the belt and battling Jim Cornette. It was a simple booking decison. The problem I see is now that Steen has the belt what is the next step for him.
There were just as many wrestlers against the MMA turn that the company was taking with guys like Richards and O'Reilly too so I while I get Davey's point part of his job is to work the best match he can with the opponent that he's booked against.

I like Kevin Steen a lot, but he was a bad fit for ROH World Champion in the sense that he doesn't really 'fit' what the title represents. Much as I dislike him, Davey Richards did...at least in spirit. Steen's matches are fun but they're all car crash, ECW style matches and that's cool, just not every iPPV and just not every ROH World Title match.

I think Kevin Steen is one of the best things going in ROH. He's different and that's why he's getting such a response from the crowd. I saw him wrestle 2 matches in 1 night in Chicago at the Synergy show. He was great in both. His match vs. Kingston was hard hitting and he wasn't doing anything that would be confused with old school ECW. His tag match was really good later in he show and it was a No DQ Match but it wasn't over the top. I understand why some wouldn't be crazy about him, especially if you're a big work rate person but you need to get the crowd emotionally invested and he's done that. I don't care if he's the next Bret Hart or not. If everyone wrestled the same style, it'd be boring.
To each their own but that's my 2 pennies on this subject.

I think Steen not fitting what the ROH title represents is the point of his whole character and title reign. He's the anti-ROH wrestler, since he returned he wrestles in shorts and a t-shirt because it upsets Cornette. Steen's the first ROH champion in some time who the fans didn't turn on once he finally won the title. Everyone waited and waited for Tyler Black to finally win the title and once he did it felt like nobody cared (even before he announced he was leaving), everyone thought Davey would beat him and they were mad when Roderick Strong won the title, everyone thought Davey would beat Roderick but Eddie won, Eddie winning was cool but it felt like people were still waiting for Davey's time and as soon as Davey won, hating Davey became the cool thing to do. Steen's gotten a strong mixed reaction from fans before and during his reign as champ. Right now, I just don't see that next guy that the fans are getting behind to be the next champion. I thought Jay Lethal was gonna be that guy or a returning El Generico. I think Adam Cole, Michael Elgin & Tomasso Ciampa will eventually get to be those guys though.

His match vs. Kingston was hard hitting and he wasn't doing anything that would be confused with old school ECW. That match in Chikara with Kingston was a totally different match than his ROH main event matches. Watch his ROH Title defense vs. Kingston, or the rematch with Richards from Best in the World...or the match with Corino at Final Battle 2011, or the match with Jimmy Jacobs at the 10th Anniversary Show, or the Last Man Standing Match with Generico from WrestleMania weekend. Those are all car crash, spot heavy matches that look like something straight out of ECW. you need to get the crowd emotionally invested and he's done that. I don't care if he's the next Bret Hart or not. If everyone wrestled the same style, it'd be boring. I agree. The problem with Steen is that before he came back, he was having perfectly good matches without all the weapons and apron spots and crazy crap he does now. I think Steen not fitting what the ROH title represents is the point of his whole character and title reign. Very well put. They did the same thing with Nigel McGuinness too. I think the biggest problem with Davey's reign were the stupidly long iPPV main event matches and how poorly booked the whole reign was. Right now, I just don't see that next guy that the fans are getting behind to be the next champion. I thought Jay Lethal was gonna be that guy or a returning El Generico. I think Adam Cole, Michael Elgin & Tomasso Ciampa will eventually get to be those guys though. Blame it on the booking. Elgin was the hot new indie guy back in April and then they cooled him off something fierce. Adam Cole could be money for them but not with his current character. Ciampa is injured, I don't think he'll be back soon. As for Lethal, his promos are awful (like REALLY awful) and his matches are just bleh. Generico isn't on good terms with Sinclair according to what I've read/heard, plus he's working with Gabe a lot so I don't think we're gonna see him back soon as well.

Steen was one of those guys I wasn't into at all until I saw him wrestle. I thought he'd be generic hardcore guy, and he won me over with his impressive offense. I totally buy him as ROH Champion.

Ah, so now I know why Steen has been wearing the t-shirt and shorts. I figured it was storyline, but could not figure out why.
Heard the show in Charlotte was one of their best. Mainly cause it was just Delirious running things and everyone was relaxed. I love "Corny" but I think it is time to let the young people have their chance to run things. And Delirious is showing he has what it takes.

I don't think Steen wearing the shirt/shorts are a storyline thing. They only mentioned it like once, and that was the night he won the title. If he just wore the singlet, it would kind of look terrible for him. He wears the shirt/shorts in PWG and pretty much everywhere else he works.

I have never seen him in anything but the singlet. All the stuff I have with him has him wearing it.

I have never seen him in anything but the singlet. All the stuff I have with him has him wearing it. For almost the past year (probably more), Steen's at least worn the shirt over the singlet in pretty much any company he's worked for. His attire doesn't really matter to me, I like Steen either way, I just don't like his World Title reign.
