A settlement is reached mere days before opening arguments are scheduled to begin before the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut in the case of John Hennigan v. WWE, Inc. While it cannot be verified, it is rumored that the sports entertainment giant agreed to a settlement to stave off a possible Federal anti-trust investigation. As a result of the settlement, all WWE superstar contracts are rendered null and void until the stringent non-compete agreements can be reworked. The WWE Legal Team immediately shifts its focus to forging new contractual agreements with its athletes, while Hennigan signs with rival company TNA.

Under the threat of lawsuits similar to Hennigan's, dozens of American wrestling organizations vacate their performers' contracts pending immediate renegotiation. A number of wrestlers immediately re-sign with their home federations, a few sign more lenient "per-appearance" contracts that will allow them to compete in other independent federations, and a handful return their contracts unsigned. Ring of Honor is hit particularly hard, as more than a dozen wrestlers depart the promotion, including Tag Team Champions the Briscoe Brothers and World Champion Davey Richards. Due to the unique relationships between the wrestlers, the founder, and the fans, independent federation CHIKARA suffers no real losses.

The grace period for WWE talent to sign their new contracts expires at midnight. Most of the federation's wrestlers and divas re-sign; notable exceptions include Seth Rollins, the FCW stars formerly known as the Kings of Wrestling, and Evan Bourne. The most devastating blow to the company comes when World Champion Daniel Bryan refuses to sign his new contract, opting to take his immediate release, with no restrictions on when or where he can compete. The WWE immediately enters damage control mode, attempting to salvage its Wrestlemania co-main event.

TNA wrestlers Abyss, Austin Aries, and Rob Van Dam no-show an event in Maryland. Fearing the worst, TNA officials call the authorities. A police cruiser is dispatched to the wrestlers' hotel, where they discover that the three men checked out earlier that day and requested a taxi to the airport. Their unsigned contracts were left in their rooms.

The Chikara event Caught in the Spider's Den is marred by the appearance of five masked men, who interfere in an eight-man tag team match and lay out fan favorites Mike Quackenbush, Jigsaw, and the Colony. The masked men depart without revealing their identities.
In other wrestling news, TNA suffers further losses when Christopher Daniels, Eric Young, Ric Flair, and (most surprisingly) Jeremy Borash leave the arena prior to a house show in Charlottesville, Virginia. Calls to their cell phones go unanswered, and road agent Al Snow finds their unsigned contracts stuffed in a folder and left in the locker room.

Blog posts on Chikara's web site address the attack on their roster, lending it the appearance of a typical storyline. While speculation runs rampant on Chikara fan sites (Is this related to the Eye of Tyr? To the unknown MysteriumP? Is it a zombie attack from the 12th dimension?), the truth is that Chikara leader Mike Quackenbush hs no idea who the assailants were, or how they made their way into the arena.

99 Luftballoons March 24, 2012 Vaughan, Ontario Dasher Hatfield vs. OphidianThis match was over almost before it began. Just two minutes in, four of the five masked invaders swarmed out of the audience and surrounded the ring. The tallest attacker grabbed Hatfield by the ankles and dragged him to the floor, where all four men began pummeling him with kicks, stomps, and punches. WINNER: Dasher Hatfield via DQ (2:14) -- After the match, Ophidian slowly transitioned from confused to angry, as the invaders' actions had cost him the match. He slithered out of the ring to confront the masked men, only to get attacked himself! The four men pummelled both Ophidian and Hatfield until Mike Quackenbush, Jigsaw, and all three members of the Colony raced out. The masked strangers quickly dispersed into the crowd and fled the arena, while the tecnicos helped their colleagues back to the locker room. Ultramantis Black vs. Green AntThe leader of the Spectral Envoy took advantage of Green Ant's frustration at the invaders to keep him off balance and ultimately pick up a victory with a surfboard stretch. WINNER: Ultramantis Black via submission (8:47) ** Mike Quackenbush vs. Brodie LeeThe founder of CHIKARA held his own within the confines of the ring against his larger opponent, so Lee naturally took the fight to the floor as often as possible. After getting the better of one ringside brawl too many, Lee leveled Quackenbush with a BIG BOOT to the back of the head, then rolled him back into the ring for an easy 1-2-3. WINNER: Brodie Lee via pinfall (10:00) **½ Incoherence vs. Los Ice CreamsLos Ice Creams picked up an upset victory when El Hijo del Ice Cream used a picture-perfect flying body press to pin Hallowicked. WINNERS: Los Ice Creams via pinfall (6:39) * Jigsaw vs. IcarusJigsaw fought gamely, but never really made it out of the starting gate, and ultimately fell prey to Icarus and his BLU-RAY. WINNER: Icarus via pinfall (4:45) * The Colony vs. The BatiriTen minutes into this match, a poorly-timed charge into the turnbuckle left referee Bryce Remsburg knocked senseless on the mat. Even after he recovered, he was definitely off a step, allowing Soldier Ant to sneak in while the Batiri had the advantage and obliterate Obariyon with a clothesline from behind. Despite being battered and extremely weak, Fire Ant rolled up Obariyon for the win. WINNERS: The Colony via pinfall (14:22) **** MAIN EVENT: Tim Donst vs. Eddie Kingston (c) for the CHIKARA Grand ChampionshipDonst shrewdly tried to attack Kingston before the opening bell, but he was intercepted and quickly put on the defensive. Donst recovered to wrestle an incredible match, keeping Kingston grounded and tied up in a succession of devastating submission holds. Ultimately, however, Kingston was able to regain his feet, shake off the cobwebs, and eventually put Donst away after his BACKFIST TO THE FUTURE. WINNER: Eddie Kingston via pinfall (7:26) ***
