HCW Training Day
July 7, 2012
Manhattan, NY
As driving rock music plays from the speakers, the camera pans to reveal a veritable who's who of the wrestling world sitting in a reserved section at ringside: Kevin Steen, Steve Corino, Adam Pearce, Eddie Edwards, Christopher Daniels, Joey Ryan, Jimmy Jacobs, Drake Younger, Jay and Mark Briscoe, Sara Del Rey, Roderick Strong, Brian Kendrick, Nigel McGuinness, and a half-dozen more major stars, including the legendary "Nature Boy" Ric Flair! None are dressed to wrestle, but more interestingly, each is armed with an iPad, pen and paper, or some other means of taking notes...
While this is sinking in, the camera pans to the announce table, revealing Dave Prazak and Mike Tenay!
TENAY: "Good evening, fans, and welcome to inaugural webcast of Heritage Championship Wrestling's Training Day! This promises to be a revolutionary concept unlike anything you've seen before..."
PRAZAK: "On the contrary, 'Professor' Mike Tenay. This is going to be a little bit like everything they've seen before. We're talking some of the greatest developments in television: Survivor, X-Factor, NXT...this is what Tough Enough or Proving Ground should have been!"
TENAY: "And of course, the very best in professional wrestling!"
PRAZAK: "That's right, we said
wrestling! Tonight, we're going to see the first eight competitors compete in a unique tournament to help determine bragging rights, and more importantly, who gets the first pick of our coaches."
TENAY: "You see them at ringside, ladies and gentlemen: Christopher Daniels, Roderick Strong, Sara Del Rey...even Ric Flair!"
PRAZAK: "Each of them has identified one indy talent they think has what it takes to make it in HCW. These guys have given their notice on their former promotions and burned their bridges to take a shot at the new big league: Heritage Championship Wrestling!"
TENAY: "At every show, someone will get eliminated, until it's down to one man. He will receive an HCW contract, but more importantly, he will be crowned the inaugural HCW Heritage Champion! And it all begins right now with an eight-man battle royal!"
Ranking Battle Royal
With the crowd going nuts (or as nuts as a mostly-empty arena can go), the competitors for the battle royal emerged from the back, one at a time: Karl Anderson, Mark Sterling, Mana, Hunter Matthews, Eddie Osbourne, Rob James, Bradley Charles, and Lazz!
Order of elimination: Lazz by Hunter Matthews (1:07), Rob James by Mana (7:33), Bradley Charles by Karl Anderson (9:34), Mana by Mark Sterling (9:49), Hunter Matthews by Karl Anderson (11:01), Eddie Osbourne by Mark Sterling (12:32), Karl Anderson by Mark Sterling (13:13).
WINNER: Mark Sterling (13:13) *
Post-Match Commentary
TENAY: "With that big win, Mark Sterling earns eight points in the Training Day standings, and will take on the first man eliminated, Lazz, in the opening round of tonight's tournament."
PRAZAK: "That's right--after the battle royal we've got Sterling sitting at eight points, Anderson at seven, all the way down to Lazz with one little point."
TENAY: "Now we move on to the next stage of tonight's event--a single-elimination tournament where a win via submission or pinfall is worth three points, a win via disqualification or count out is worth two, and even a loss via disqualification is worth one point."
PRAZAK: "Mike, win or lose, these guys will have a vested interest in every match tonight, because the two men who place in the bottom will be up for elimination in the final round."
TENAY: "Absolutely, Dave--they'll each be in the corner of the man who needs to win to save them in this tournament. If their man loses, they go home. It's just that simple."
Hunter Matthews (4) vs. Mana (5)
Not much to see here. Mana was still pretty gassed from his participation in the battle royal, and Matthews scored a quick pinfall after a fist drop from the second rope.
WINNER: Hunter Matthews via pinfall (2:33) --
Eddie Osbourne (3) vs. Bradley Charles (6)
This match was a little more entertaining, but only a little. Bradley was clearly overmatched and never managed to mount much of an offense, but his quickness and counter wrestling kept Osbourne from sustaining a prolonged assault. In the end, Charles took a count out loss to earn himself a single point.
WINNER: Eddie Osbourne via count out (10:56) ½
Karl Anderson (2) vs. Rob James (7)
This decent match saw the first serious upset of the evening, as James' superior conditioning allowed him to keep Anderson off-balance until he could hit his 94% BTU DRIVER for the win.
WINNER: Rob James via pinfall (7:27) *
Mark Sterling (1) vs. Lazz (8)
The freaky Lazz was clearly infatuated with Sterling, and his questionable antics caused the tournament's top seed to come completely unglued! After one butt-grab, chest-rub, and disturbing gyration too many, Sterling attacked the freaky Cajun with a steel chair, costing himself the match.
WINNER: Lazz via disqualification (8:09) *
Eddie Osbourne (3) vs. Hunter Matthews (4)
Osbourne's experience was simply too much for Matthews, who wound up drawing an intentional DQ just to salvage a single point out of what was going to be a loss no matter how he sliced it.
WINNER: Eddie Osbourne via DQ (4:25) *
Rob James (7) vs. Lazz (8)
Once again, Lazz's deviant behavior gave him the edge in his match, keeping James completely off his game and easy prey for a variety of deeply disturbing takedowns and groin shots. Ultimately, the bizarre Lazz scored a pinfall after a hurricanrana, wrapping up James' legs for good measure (and apparently enjoying himself as he straddled his opponent's shoulders).
WINNER: Lazz via pinfall (19:40) **½
Post-Match Commentary
While Lazz was taking a breather after his match with Rob James, the announce team provided a breakdown of the tournament and revealed that Mana and Karl Anderson were the men on the chopping block. Mana would need Eddie Osbourne to win to remain alive in the competition, while Anderson's hopes rested on a third straight Lazz upset.
Prazak and Tenay also talked about the Training Day coaches, revealing that there were still more to be revealed in the coming weeks. They also announced that Sara Del Rey would be the only female coach, and that the Briscoes would be coaching as one unit. None of the recruits would know which coach had picked them for the tournament until they had made their selection for who they wanted to be paired with.
MAIN EVENT: Eddie Osbourne (3) vs. Lazz (8)
Lazz tried to exploit his questionable antics to earn his third win, but the cagey Osbourne ignored the psychological ploy, and was simply too tough for Lazz to pursue the matter. Though the match went back and forth at a few key points, Osbourne never really lost control of the contest, and picked up the win after planting Lazz with his FINAL IMPACT.
WINNER: Eddie Osbourne via pinfall (5:38) **
Post-Match Commentary
With the first HCW card in the books, Tenay and Prazak announced that they would broadcast another free show on the Internet next week, live from the Manhattan Center. As the show came to a close, the Training Day standings scrolled up the screen...
