Heritage Championship Wrestling followed up its well-received Genesis show with the first round in its World Championship Tournament, as well as several matches in its Tag Team Championship Tournament. Mike Tenay and Dave Prazak reviewed the pairings in the World Title Tournament, based on the results of the battle royal at Genesis, then the action opened with tag team competition.
The Barking Spiders vs. The Naptown Dragons
Tenay and Prazak noted that Dustin Lee had come out of retirement--and his old partner's request--so the duo could have one last run at glory. Despite a valiant effort by both men, they could not overcome their collective ring rust, and Clutch wound up pinning Scotty Vortekz after the SPIDER BITE DROP.
WINNERS: The Barking Spiders via pinfall (7:19) *
Post-Match Drama
After the bell sounded, the unpredictable duo from Detroit continued to menace Vortekz. Dustin Lee quickly retrieved a chair from ringside and slid into the the ring, swinging wildly and sending Ox and Clutch fleeing from the ring. Lee took a moment to catch his breath, then turned without warning and unloaded on Vortekz--still on his hands and knees--with a blistering chair shot acoss the head that busted him open and knocked him out cold. Glaring in obviousl disgust, Lee threw the chair down and left the ring as medical officials rushed out to check on his partner and the crowned rained down boo's and garbage on the retreating Lee.
CM Punk vs. El Generico
Punk took a moment to soak in the cheers of the crowd when the match started, and turned around straight into a Generico dropkick that dimmed his lights. A SPIKE BRAINBUSTER only got two, but a second one put Punk away and gave the masked man a huge upset.
WINNER: El Generico via pinfall (2:03) ½
Roderick Strong vs. Joey Ryan
Ryan showed some toughness in this match--and it was a good thing, because he showed remarkably little offense. Strong whipped Ryan from pillar to post, scoring a couple near falls before finally putting Ryan away with a SICK KICK to advance in the tournament.
WINNER: Roderick Strong via pinfall (4:36) *½
Triple-Threat Match: Jimmy Jacobs vs. Drew Gulak vs. Chuck Taylor
Drew Gulak was obviously disgusted with the prospect of wrestling the blissfully hardcore Jacobs, but his attempt to form an alliance with Taylor only earned him a punch in the face to start the action. Taylor and Gulak exchanged holds while Jacobs watched, amused, and finally leaped into action to break up a pinfall after Taylor hit the OMEGA DRIVER. Jacobs quickly got the better of Taylor and hit his CONTRA CODE, only to have Gulak break up the pinfall with an elbow drop. The match continued in this vein as time ticked away, and ultimately expired without a clear winner.
NO WINNER: Time limit draw (30:00) **½
Abyss vs. Homicide
Despite being overpowered and dominated, Homicide was able to keep himself alive with strategic eye rakes and low blows. He endured the best Abyss could through at him, until the big man began to tire himself out, allowing Homicide to land an unbelievable GRINGO KILLER to pick up the win.
WINNER: Homicide via pinfall (10:11) **
Triple-Threat Match: Sami Callihan vs. Jay Lethal vs. Cedric the Hitman
Once again, there were no real allies in this match, which saw all three men tear into one another (primarily in convenient sets of two at a time). The end came when all three men were braling on the floor. Callihan and Cedric really began laying into one another, while the cagey Lethal held back to listen to the referee's count. He slid back into the ringas the referee reached nine, and took the victory as the other two men were counted out.
WINNER: Jay Lethal via count out (19:57) **
Jerry Lynn vs. Steve Corino
The rash of upsets continued as the unpopular Corino pinned the even more unpopular Lynn after an OLD SCHOOL EXPULSION to knock the "New F'n Show" out of the tournament.
WINNER: Steve Corino via pinfall (4:52) ½
Eddie Edwards vs. Rhino
Taking a page from Homicide's book, Edwards endured the punishment dished out by his larger opponent, until Rhino began to wear himself out and Edwards could turn the tide. The big man was never able to recover, and wound up with a broken and bloodied nose after a stiff lariat caught him across the face and put him down for the three-count.
WINNER: Eddie Edwards via pinfall (9:13) **½
Adam Pearce vs. Davey Richards
Ric Flair's presence at ringside gave Pearce an early edge, but it did not last, and Richards came roaring back to wear Pearce down and pick up the win with his ANKLE LOCK.
WINNER: Davey Richards via submission (5:28) *½
Scorpio Sky vs. Brian Kendrick
Despite his best efforts to play heel, the crowd rallied behind Sky as he took on the treacherous Brian Kendrick, and exploded when he picked up the win after a DDT.
WINNER: Scorpio Sky via pinfall (28:39) **
The Young Bucks vs. Los Banditos
The Bucks went into this match expecting to cruise to victory, but apparently their opponents didn't get that memo. The Jacksons' high-flying offense crashed into the brick wall that was Rico Dynamite and Tito Escondido, who picked apart the Bucks and finally put them away when Rico pinned Matt after their double team BADLANDS.
WINNERS: Los Banditos via pinfall (10:19) *½
Masada vs. Drake younger
Younger was clearly fired up over the drama between his former partners Dustin Lee and Scoty Vortekz, and he rode that wave of emotion to endure the MASADAMIZER ad rally back to pick up the upset win after DRAKE'S LANDING.
WINNER: Drake Younger via pinfall (8:39)
Baltimore Street Fight: Christopher Daniels vs. Mike Quackenbush
The no-DQ nature of this match never really came to play, as Quackenbush (accompanied by Ric Flair) and Daniels largely kept the action in the ring, where the CHIAKRA founder was able to exploit his quickness advantage to avoid the ANGEL'S WINGS and the BME, and come back with a QUACKENDRIVER III to take home the win.
WINNER: Mike Quackenbush via pinfall (6:22) *½
MAIN EVENT: Kevin Steen vs. Bryan Danielson
The bad blood between these two men led to a violent altercation, and with minutes, Steen had been driven head-first into the ring post and busted open. Ric Flair helped his man slow things down and turn the tide, and it was not long before a wild chair shot (while Flair distracted the official) had Danielson wearing a crimson mask as well. The American Dragon shook off the cobwebs and managed to secure his CATTLE MUTILATION, only to have Steen reach the ropes. He tried to turn it into a TRIANGLE CHOKE, but Flair jumped onto the apron, providing a distraction and enabling Steen to stun his smaller opponent with a low blow. One PACKAGE PILEDRIIVER later, Steen had advanced to the Quarter Finals.
WINNER: Kevin Steen via pinfall (16:04) ***
