Eddie Kingston vs. Archibald Peck
Archibald Peck looked decent in this match, and appeared to be on his way to another upset of Kingston after hitting his CRANIAL CRESCENDO, though he only got a two-count. He went for the high risk move again, only to have Kingston roll out of the way. As Peck crashed and burned, his valet Veronica through her hands up in disgust and stormed away from the ring, returning to the back as Kingston dismantled Peck and put him away with a SLIDING D.
WINNER: Eddie Kingston via pinfall (5:09) *
In-Ring Promo: Johnny Gargano
Gargano had been M.I.A. for quite a while, and unavailable for comment as his long-time partner (and Similarly-Tighted Friend) Chuck Taylor found himself shanghaied to HCW, while his part-time Trios partner captured the Grand Championship. He finally made his return in the Windy City, presumably to address his future.
GARGANO: "I think at this time, it would be appropriate if we all bowed our heads in a moment of silence for the demise of one of the greatest tag teams in wrestling history--Chuck Taylor and me, Johnny Gargano."
CROWD: "Boo!"
GARGANO: "See, that's what Chuck was always saying about you people. You have no respect!"
CROWD: "Boo!"
GARGANO: "Alright, you know what? I'm not gonna let it bother me. Because I came out here with an announcement. And this is it: even in the absence of our fallen brother, Chuck Taylor, the Friends in Similar Tights will go on! Leaner, stronger, and tougher than ever, Icarus and I will--"
Gargano was cut off as Icarus' music began playing, and the reigning CHIKARA Grand Champion made his way out to the ring, walking quickly and shaking his head. He drew a hand across his throat repeatedly, trying to signal Gargano to cut his comments short, but wound up taking Gavin Loudspeaker's house microphone and sliding into the ring.
GARGANO: "Hey! We were just talking about you!"
ICARUS: "I know. I heard. And... Look, John. That thing with the tag team, that was you and Chuck. I never had any interest in it, and as you can see, focusing on my singles career has worked out pretty damn good for me."
GARGANO: "That's right! Just like I said, the Friends in Si--"
ICARUS: "No, see...you're not hearing me. John, I'm a champion, now. I earned it on my own merits. I don't need any friends. I don't want any friends!"
GARGANO: "Well... Alright. Alright, I get that. We can focus on being partners. Yeah! Partners in Similar Tights!"
ICARUS: "P.I.S.T.?"
GARGANO: "Yeah! Can't you see it now? The tee-shirts! The posters! The... Okay, maybe you can't see it. Alright, what about Dudes in Colorful Ki--"
ICARUS: "No! No, John! We're not going to be F.I.S.T. We're not going to be P.I.S.T. We're certainly not going to be D.I.... You know what, just forget it. You're on you own, John."
GARGANO: "Wait a minute! You can't just...quit the team! Just like that?"
ICARUS: "Just like that."
GARGANO: "Well, fine! I can be a singles star, too. Maybe I'll drop my name into a contender's match or two. Maybe I'll be the next Grand Champion!"
ICARUS: "Ha ha... Really? I'll tell you what, Johnny--if you can beat me in a match tonight, not only will I give you a title shot, I'll still be your partner!"
GARGANO: "Yeah? Yeah? You're on!"
The crowd cheered Gargano, though it was rather sedate. Mostly, they just weren't sure what to make of this dispute between former partners.
Tim Donst vs. Colt Cabana
This was an outstanding match that saw Cabana frustrate the terminally serious Donst with his wild antics, then take full advantage of the openings he created by scoring near falls with his COLT .45--twice--and two near-submissions with a reverse crab, though Donst was able to reach the ropes, forcing a break both times. Even Jakob Hammermeier's presence at ringside was insufficient to help Donst rally, though he did manage to hang on long enough to see the time limit run out.
Time Limit Draw (20:00) ***
A.R. Fox vs. Gregory Iron
These two had some unfinished business coming out of their first match, and Iron went right after Fox, looking for some payback. While he got off to a hot start, Fox outsmarted him by taking the fight to the floor, then nailing him with a low blow outside the ring. Iron never really recovered, and Fox cruised to victory after that with his 450 SPLASH.
WINNER: A.R. Fox via pinfall (9:17) *½
Brodie Lee & Grizzly Redwood vs. The Batiri
This was a slow, plodding match, as Lee was simply too big and too strong to let the Batiri dominate him, and Redwood was fast enough to avoid a great deal of their offense. Over the course of eighteen minutes, the demons simply tired themselves out, allowing Redwood and Lee to turn the tables, take a serious advantage, and ride it to victory when Redwood pinned Obariyon after their double-team ROUGHNECKED.
WINNERS: Brodie Lee and Grizzly Redwood (25:11) *½
Non-Title Match: Grand Champion Icarus vs. Johnny Gargano
The tone of this match was set right at the opening bell, when Gargano offered a handshake, and Icarus responded with a savage kick to the midsection. Despite being at a disadvantage early, Gargano was able to mount a rally, and even scored a two-count with a school-boy roll-up after a mistimed charge into the turnbuckle by Icarus. Ultimately, however, Icarus demonstrated why he was the champion by breaking Gargano and hitting the WINGS OF ICARUS...and picking Gargano up off the mat. Another WINGS OF ICARUS earned him a two count, but he picked Gargano up again rather than taking the win. Finally, he crushed his former partner with a BLU-RAY, made the cover, and deigned to take the win.
WINNER: Icarus via pinfall (14:15) *½
Trios Match: The Spectral Envoy vs. The BDK
Ultramantis Black was clearly unfocused, even as he made his way to the ring with his teammates. Seconds after the bell had rung, he (starting the match as team captain) dropped to the canvas and rolled to the floor, walking slowly to the back. Frightmare and Hallowicked tried to intercept him, nudging him and waving in his face, but he seemed to be in some sort of trance. The bemused referee had no choice other than counting the Envoy team out.
WINNERS: The BDK via count out (1:03) --
Post-Match Drama
Ares, Pinkie Sanchez, and team captain Claudio Castagnoli were equally baffled by the behavior of the Spectral Envoy, but they celebrated the unusual win anyway. Just as they were lining up for the BDK salute, "Crank That" by Soulja Boy began pounding through the arena, bringing the crowd to their feat as hometown favorites Acid Jaz, Marshe Rockett, and Willie Richardson--Da Soul Touchaz--emerged from the back and danced their way down the aisle. Making their way into the ring, they nodded their greetings to the BDK faction...then attacked!
Acid Jaz spat blinding mist into Castagnoli's eyes, Rockett immediately planted Sanchez with an M-80, and Richardson began laying into Ares with massive right hands. Ares began to fight back, but this was aborted when Rockett dove across the ring, taking him out with a chop block as Jaz hit an X-Factor, then a REMIX on the blinded Castagnoli. Then, to add insult to injury (or, for that matter, to add more injury to injury), Rockett and Jaz held Castagnoli down by the arms and legs as Richardson came off the ropes, DROPPIN' DA BOMB on the BDK captain. The Windy City trio rolled Castagnoli out of the way and hit the move again on Ares, then on Sanchez. By this point, the hometown crowd had turned on Da Soul Touchaz, and they finished off their assault by mocking the BDK, lining up to mimic their salute by substituting rude gestures.
Green Ant vs. Shard
Shard came out even before his music played, to watch the trainers tend to the BDK--taking great delight in their suffering. Once the ring was cleared, he and Green Ant put on an a very solid match that saw Green Ant driven into the ring post so hard, he began to bleed through his mask. He tried to come back, and nearly had Shard beaten with a CLOVERLEAF, but with dripping blood obscuring his vision, he didn't realize how close he was to the ropes, and Shard was able to grab them.
The referee ordered Green Ant to release the hold, and he threw his arms up, thinking he had won the match. As the referee tried to explain that Shard had reached the ropes, the Gekido star managed to regain his feet, and landed a devastating SUPER KICK as soon as his opponent turned around, putting him away for good.
WINNER: Shard via pinfall (18:29) ***
17 vs. Jigsaw
There was no love lost between these two competitors, and it really showed, as they threw their best moves at one another right out of the gate, trying to take each other down. The action spilled to the floor on several occasions, and when it did, neither man hesitated to use the ringpost, the timekeeper's table, or even steel chairs as weapons, which the referee elected to allow. After the high-impact offense in the ring and the no-holds-barred action on the floor, Jigsaw surprised everyone--but mostly his opponent--by coming off the ropes with a sleeper hold and cinching it on tight to knock 17 out.
WINNER: Jigsaw by submission (18:20) **
Post-Match Drama
After the match, Jigsaw took one look at his unconscious opponent and grabbed at his mask, tugging at the laces to pull it off while the crowd went wild. Before he could unmask Gekido's leader, Shard, HymenopterANT, and Tyler Black raced out, slid into the ring, and chased him away.
MAIN EVENT: The Colony (c) vs. The Swarm in a European Rules Match for the Campeonatos de Parejas
After 17's loss and near-unmasking, the Swarm was fired up, and it showed as they attacked the champions before the opening bell. Despite holding the advantage for several minutes against Fire Ant, they could not put the man in red away, and he managed to make a hot tag to Soldier Ant. After that, the match really evened out: the action was fast and furious, and tags were lightning quick on both sides. Well into the match, a double clothesline had Fire Ant dazed. Tyler Black climbed to the top turnbuckle while HymenopterANT pre-emptively dashed across the ring to occupy Soldier Ant. One PHOENIX SPLASH later, the Swarm was up one fall to none (27:54).
Even after the rest period, Fire Ant was in no particular shape to continue, but HymenopterANT and Soldier Ant were still tied up on the floor, across the ring. The referee took a moment to force them to separate, and Soldier Ant broke free and climbed back onto the apron...allowing the dastardly HymenopterANT to grab his ankles and yank him off the apron. Soldier Ant fell face-first onto the apron, and was a non-factor from that point forward. The challengers made a couple tags to keep themselves fresh, but ultimately, Tyler Black splattered Fire Ant across the turnbuckles with a power bomb and covered him to bring the titles to the Gekido!
