My predictions for the first round are highlighted... From there my picks are: Semifinal winners: - The Briscoes and The Kings of Wrestling - Bryan Danielson and AJ Styles Final winners and NEW champions: - The Briscoes - AJ Styles Which only leaves one question on everyone's mind... A question that I'm sure will play into a serious angle somewhere... Where is Kevin Steen?

Excellent picks! I'll admit there were some surprises, but I was very happy with the way the tournaments played out.
And yes, Steen has some unfinished business so I decided to leave him out of the tournament... How happy is he about this? How does he feel about he and Generico being stripped of the tag belts? How does he feel about Generico's injury? (Which, for the record was at the hands of Necro Butcher...) All questions I'm going to have to answer...
There are definitely some other teams and folks I could've seeded, but I wanted to flip the script somewhat, obviously only about half these guys were actually wrestling for ROH in June of '09, but hopefully this helps set the precedent that anything can happen and anyone can show up while still maintaining some fidelity to ROH 2002-2008 and using that to springboard into the "future".
Thanks for the responses!

Dateline June 15 2009:
ROH is proud to announce an added attraction for BitW Night 2! Necro Butcher of the Age of the Fall was responsible for El Genericoโs torn MCL and Kevin Steen has asked for and been granted a matchโฆ Jimmy Jacobs responded that Butcher would only accept if it was a Fight Without Honor! Naturally, Steen had no issues with that part of the deal!

ROH: Best In The World 2009 Night 1 06.19.2009 from Hammerstein Ballroom, New York, New York
- Four Way Mayhem - Alex Koslov vs. Brent Albright vs. Delirious vs. Kenny King Brent Albright defeated Alex Koslov with a CROWBAR at 18:12 Match Rating: 3.75 Match Notes: Great start to BitW!
Delirious and Koslov started the match off and it was all Delirious. He took the fight to the Moldovan Menace and scored a couple of nearfalls, but King and Albright would break them up.
Eventually Albright would make his way into the match and he and Delirious would exchange brutal strikes and special moves leading to more nearfalls.
Delirious seemed to have the match locked away after Shadows Over Hell, but Koslov made a blind tag in! All hell is breaking loose and King and Delirious spill outside as the ref tries to focus on the in ring action...
CONTRACT KILLER! 1... 2... NO! Albright is in trouble and King and Delirious are fighting on the outside! Koslov is bringing it, but action spills out and Albright posts Koslov!
Delirious with a dive on King!
Albright rolls Koslov in... CROWBAR!!! Koslov taps! Delirious can't make the save and Brent Albright moves on to the match to crown the first ever ROH World Television Champion!
- Non-Wrestling Segment - Earlier today, ROH interviewer Becky Bayless caught up with one of the men in the World title tournament...
Austin Aries is stretching in the middle of the ROH ring set up in the Hammerstein Ballroom.
BECKY: Austin, since returning to Ring of Honor, youโve not hidden the fact that you want that title around your waist again. No one has ever been a two time world champion. What do you think your chances are?
ARIES: This past year has taught me a lot. Between the overtures from Age of the Fall, Lacey coming in and out of my life, Jimmy Jacobs, inexplicably, still wanting me on โhis sideโ, whatever that meansโฆ Itโs reminded me that the only thing you can ever rely on is yourself. I made myself. And thatโs exactly what Iโll continue to do. And nothing will stop me from becoming a two time World Champion, certainly not Roderick Strongโฆ
- ROH World Tag Team Championship Round One - American Wolves vs. The Bravado Brothers Eddie Edwards defeated Harlem Bravado with a force of nature at 12:37 Match Rating: 3.50 Match Notes: The Bravados really took it to the Wolves who didn't look to be on the same page at the beginning of the bout, but that wouldn't last.
Tho Harlem and Lancelot certainly got their licks in early, particularly on an isolated Davey Richards, the Wolves were not to be trifled with.
Perhaps there was a little too much showboating, but Eddie Edwards shifted the momentum and when Richards came back in the ring he locked in an ANKLE LOCK that nearly scored the victory.
When it did come it was in spectacular style! Richards had a cloverleaf locked, but cose to tag in Edwards... Superkick into the German suplex! A bridge! 1... 2... Lancelot breaks it up, but while the ref is escorting him to the apron, Richards is back in... Force of Nature!!!! The ref turns around...
1, 2, 3!
The American Wolves with an impressive tag team victory to advance!
- ROH World Heavyweight Championship Round One - Roderick Strong vs. Austin Aries Roderick Strong defeated Austin Aries with an End of Heartache at 12:30 Match Rating: 3.75 Match Notes: It has to be noted that Austin Aries is heavily favored to win the ROH World Heavyweight Championship, becoming a two time champion. A feat never accomplished before in ROH.
It should also be noted that, tho they once were partners in Generation Next, Strong and Aries do not like one another.
This was a great match and a perfect way to open up the ROH World Heavyweight Championship tournament.
The exchanged strikes early and then Aries made a huge statement with a crucifix bomb out of no where!
It was all Aries who would also hit a car crash of a suicide dive outside.
Back inside, tho Strong caught him with a codebreaker type maneuver as Aries came off the top rope! He scored a nearfall and then went to work with a cloverleaf after a half nelson backbreaker.
Aries would battle back, tho and they would go back and forth. Aries with hi impact offense and Strong using holds to stretch his rival...
Eventually, Strong would string together some big moves: Gibson driver! Death By Roderick! Backbreaker into the turnbuckle! And then after locking in the Lebell Lock and nearly getting a tapout, he hit a weakened Aries with the End of Heartache for the 1, 2, 3!
There is no handshake after the match and you get the feeling that regardless of how the rest of the tournament pans out, these two haven't seen the last of one another.
- Four Way Mayhem - Bobby Fish vs. Brodie Lee vs. Rocky Romero vs. Rhett Titus Brodie Lee defeated Bobby Fish with a BIG BOOT at 30:45 Match Rating: 4.25 Match Notes: This was a great match! All four men had their moments and it was literally anybody's match.
It was not, however, without a little controversy... About 25 minutes into this wild battle, Romero and Fish were the legal men and all four were fighting out of the ring. Romero, hoping the ref was distracted, smacked Fish with the ring bell!!! The ref, however, was not so blind and immediately sent Romero to the back.
It was announced that Romero had been DQ'd from the bout, but that the match would continue as it could not be won via DQ.
Brodie Lee seized the moment, tho and destroyed Bobby Fish with a powerbomb, Black Hole Slam, and a chokeslam!
BIG BOOT!!!
Titus can't make the save! 1, 2, 3!
Brodie Lee moves on to the Television title final!
- ROH World Heavyweight Championship Round One - Homicide vs. Rhino Homicide defeated Rhino with a DA GRINGO KILLER at 10:38 Match Rating: 2.75 Match Notes: This was just an out and out brawl. And it was all Homicide.
Rhino had a couple of moments of offense, but it was all for naught.
Homicide came out strong right out of the gates and when action spilled outside he used the fork! The ref missed it and Rhino was bleeding!
Homicide would score a nearfall with DA GRINGO KILLER, but Rhino wouldn't be put away easily.
He kicked out of multiple nearfalls and finishers, truly showing his resilience in spite of being busted open.
The finish saw Rhino score one of his short lived moments of offense with a clothesline, but Homicide came off the ropes with a shoulder tackle and hit a piledriver! 1... 2... NO!
DA GRINGO KILLER! For the third time in the match Homicide hits him with his finisher and it's enough to finally score the win! Homicide advances!
- Non-Wrestling Segment - AJ Styles is pacing the hallway listening to music as Becky Bayless and crew approach.
BECKY: AJ Styles, you are in the tournament to crown a new World Heavyweight Champion. What do you think your chances are this weekend?
STYLES: Becky, I've been a world champion. Multiple times. Tonight, my path starts with Adam Pearce. Both of us are former NWA World Heavyweight champions... There was a time when that belt meant everything. It meant it all, Becky. From Gotch to Thesz. From Race to Flair to Steamboat! But now, things have changed. Now, it's all about Ring of Honor! And anyone who knows AJ Styles, knows that I don't settle for second best. So, Pearce, from one for NWA champ, to another, bring your best, because that's what it's going to take to stop me from being the next Ring of Honor World Champion!
- ROH World Tag Team Championship Round One - Kings of Wrestling vs. Young Bucks Chris Hero defeated Nick Jackson with a ROLLING ELBOW SMASH at 13:00 Match Rating: 2.50 Match Notes: This bout was a statement; plain and simple. And that statement was all about the Kings of Wrestlig.
They dominated the Young Bucks and took turns destroying Matt Jackson until he could make a desperation tag that then gave Hero and Castagnoli the chance to destroy Nick...
The Bucks tried to hang in there and even had some impressive kicks outs and pin saves after some big moves.
But the third ROLLING ELBOW SMASH of the match was too much and the Kings of Wrestling move on after a devastating display of tag team wrestling that leaves Nick Jackson in a heap.
- ROH World Tag Team Championship Round One - Switchblade Conspiracy vs. The Age of the Fall Tyler Black defeated Sami Callihan with a PHOENIX SPLASH at 4:53 Match Rating: 2.00 Match Notes: Good while it lasted, but the Age of the Fall proved to be the better oiled machine.
Jacobs and Moxley went back and forth briefly before Jacobs got the advantage and hit a big springboard dropkick.
It was short-lived, but an attempted double-team by the Switchblade Conspiracy backfired and Jacobs made a tag into Tyler Black.
Black used a succession of kicks to take Callihan down and led to a quick and stratosphere breaking PHOENIX SPLASH while Jacobs pulled Moxley from the apron!
1, 2, 3! The Age of the Fall has moved on.
- Non-Wrestling Segment - We go to the back for some words from the Briscoe Brothers...
JAY BRISCOE: Dem boys, dem boys, dem boys! Ring of Honor! Best in the World! Mark and Jay are coming for the tag team titles and ain't nobody even gonna come close to stoppin us. Ain't nobody willin to do what we will to take those titles and put 'em where they belong!
MARK BRISCOE: American Wolves! Kings of Wrestling! We don't got no problems taking any of those teams out. We been here since day one, boys! Day one! And we got two more words for all ya'll!
BRISCOES: Man up!
- ROH World Heavyweight Championship Round One - Adam Pearce vs. AJ Styles AJ Styles defeated Adam Pearce with a Pele kick at 14:51 Match Rating: 3.75 Match Notes: AJ set the tone with a discus lariat right off the bat! Pearce had his moments, but never fully recovered after the opening salvo from Styles.
Pearce was able to make a sustained comeback about halfway through the match and used a combination of blows and suplexes to nearly take Styles down, but he went up top in the corner and Styles ran up the corner and hit a Frankensteiner in spectacular fashion!
The action would spill outside and Styles won the ensuing brawl by tossing a chair into Pearce's face!
Back inside AJ caught him with the Phenomenal DDT!
STYLES CLASH! 1... 2... NO!
Pearce took two more CLASHes, but got the shoulder up each time!
He was on dream street tho and following a Pele kick Styles finally made the successful cover to move on in the tournament.
- Non-Wrestling Segment - Bryan Danielson is sitting in the locker room taping up his wrists.
BECKY: Bryan, Bryan, can we get some comments going into this weekend?
BRYAN: [looks at Becky and then straight into the camera.] Just one: Best... Wrestlerโฆ In the world!
The camera lingers on Danielson as he goes back to taping up his wrists and Becky stares on, clearly having hoped for a more verbose statement from the former ROH World Champion...
- ROH World Tag Team Championship Round One - The Briscoe Brothers vs. World's Greatest Tag Team Jay Briscoe defeated Charlie Haas with a sunset flip at 5:25 Match Rating: 2.50 Match Notes: There was quite a story to this one!
Benjamin and Haas dominated with exceptional tag work and scored a couple of big nearfalls early on Jay Briscoe.
Mark was neutralized early, but Jay would not stay down.
Haas was in charge and whipped Jay into the ropes, but Jay caught him with a lightning fast sunset flip and got a quick 1, 2, 3 before Benjamin could break up the fall!
The Briscoes were by no means underdogs, but it was still a surprising finish after the display from the WGTT!
- ROH World Heavyweight Championship Round One - Bryan Danielson vs. Steve Corino Bryan Danielson defeated Steve Corino with a MMA ELBOWS at 3:20 Match Rating: 2.50 Match Notes: This was an explosive battle!
Corino came out with a brainbuster and got a nearfall!
OLD SCHOOL LARIAT! 1... 2... NO!
Danielson whipped into the turnbuckle... He comes out with a skull crushing lariat of his own! CROSSFACE CHICKENWING! But Corino gets to the ropes.
Danielson would hit a masterful suicide dive that left both men in a heap outside, but the American Dragon was up and rolled Corino in.
Back inside he mercilessly pounded Corino with MMA ELBOWS and Corino was out!
The ref has no choice but to stop the match!
Perhaps the odds on favorite to take the tournament and become a two time ROH World Heavyweight Champion makes quick work of Mr. Old School!
Overall Card Rating: 3.13

HOLY SNAP! I do believe I went 7-for-8 with the Tag Team and World Championship quarters... And although my pick for the winner of the TV title match has been eliminated, Brodie Lee still made it to the final... Definitely the best I've ever done with pre-show predictions...
Awesome show overall! Excellent job with the match summaries - Great detail without losing the reader... Can't wait til the next installment...

Night 1 was really top notch, but too bad the Switchblade Conspiracy, Steve Corino and WGTT lost their matches. It's good to see Roderick Strong, Homicide and AJ Styles all win. It'll be fun to see your next Night of action...
