ROH: Best In The World Night 2
06.20.2009 from Hammerstein Ballroom, New York, New York
- Non-Wrestling Segment -
We open with Age of the Fall members Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black in a darkened locker room. Jacobs is on the floor strumming an acoustic guitar... Black is pacing the room while Jacobs is oblivious to the tension in the air...
JACOBS: Lacey Lacey where have you gone... I can't even sing this song...
BLACK: Come on Jimmy...
JACOBS: Right, right... ROH Tag Team titles... I know what it takes to win the tag titles! I know what it would mean to the disenfranchised... To the voiceless... To see Tyler Black and myself already two time tag champs- I'm sorry, get the cameras out of here.
BLACK: Jimmy. Jimmy! I know you're distracted! I know you haven't seen Lacey in months, I get it... Austin Aries has turned you away... I've almost walked out... But, but it's you, me, and Butcher! We've got to keep it together-
JACOBS: You're right, you're right... Kevin Steen! You want the Butcher in a match! It's a Fight Without Honor! And I doubt you can even survive! You are the cancer that should be cut out of Ring of Honor! And the tag team titles... Belts that represent teamwork... That will give direction to and empower those that society has put down for years and years... We will still shine the light in the dark place, we will be the paragon, the harbinger of salvation that Ring of Honor- No, the world! Desperately needs. I will not succumb to the darkness that surrounds us! I will not let the world bring me down and I will stay focused on our goals. Because when you are the symbol of an ideology that is soaked in the blood of innocents, you have no choice, but to be your best!
Jimmy pulls out his railroad spike and drives it through the guitar repeatedly before leaving the locker room with Tyler Black in tow.

The Briscoe Brothers vs. American Wolves
Davey Richards defeated Jay Briscoe with a DQ at 12:57
Match Rating: 3.25
Match Notes: Eddie Edwards took the beating of a life time at the beginning of the match and it looked like the Briscoes would run away with this.
Edwards was split open on the outside only a few minutes into the match, but in spite of taking JAY DRILLERs and a big DOUBLE TEAM FOOTBALL TACKLE he kept getting the shoulder up!
Finally he made the tag to Davey Richards and the match settled into a back and forth pace with Richards taking the fight to Jay.
Richards missed a charging shoulder, tho and the Briscoes took over working the double team and once again dominating the bout.
The action would devolve into a brawl outside the ring and Richards was in trouble, but Edwards was still out of it.
Jay, showing his frustration tossed a chair into Richards' face and the ref called for the DQ!
The fans and the Briscoes are HOT!
The Wolves move on, but will Edwards be able to be effectual after being busted open and beaten down early in this match?
[Edwards will start the title match with 2 tokens]

Kings of Wrestling vs. The Age of the Fall
Claudio Castagnoli defeated Tyler Black with a RICOLA BOMB at 23:18
Match Rating: 4.25
Match Notes: This was a tag team classic! They went back and forth and the tone was set from the get go as Claudio and Black jockeyed for position and then the Kings of Wrestling took over and used a hi impact offense earmarked by great double teaming to punish Tyler Black something fierce!
A RICOLA BOMB brought Jacobs in for the save and a wild brawl erupted between all four men! The ref gave them repeated warnings and had we not needed a clear winner for the Championship final later tonight, I have a feeling all four would've been DQ'd!
Black was somehow able to make a comeback and then tagged in Jacobs! They hit a powerbomb into the Contra Code and Jacobs had the advantage on Castagnoli.
The match continued in a hi impact back and forth style and Black was even able to get back in and nearly scored the win with the PHOENIX SPLASH on Hero!
After more amazing tag action the finish came when Tyler Black, fully in control went for an enzugiri, but Claudio ducked it and hit a belly to back suplex! RICOLA BOMB! Jacobs can't make the save and the Kings of Wrestling have cashed their check to the ROH World Tag Team Championship final!
Jacobs threatens Claudio with the railroad spike, but gets blindsided by Hero's Rolling Elbow!
This might not be over...
[Chris Hero enters the final with 1 token]

Homicide vs. AJ Styles
AJ Styles defeated Homicide with a STYLES CLASH at 19:55
Match Rating: 4.25
Match Notes: This was a stellar match! Both men brought their a-game, proving just how important the Ring of Honor World Championship is.
It was a solid back and forth affair the whole way through with Styles maintaining a slight edge, but it could've gone either way.
Styles went for the fall right out of the gate, but Homicide was having none of it and came roaring back with a lariat.
He worked a hold for a while, but Styles then made the comeback. They continued in this fashion for the majority of the match.
Homicide almost got the win after a piledriver on the apron, but Styles would not be denied and took the fight to Homicide.
He worked him over with all the hi impact offense he had to offer!
A STYLES CLASH a little over 12 minutes in wouldn't end the bout, tho!
Styles kept the pressure on and the finish came shortly after a Spinal Tap.
Styles shot Homicide into the turnbuckle and both men hit lariats! Styles is to his feet first... Both men are on wobbly legs...
STYLES CLASH!
1, 2, 3!
AJ Styles has fought his way into the finals!

Becky Bayless is with Roderick Strong in the back!
BECKY: Roderick, last night you defeated former champion Austin Aries to secure your spot in the ROH World Championship semi-finals. What are your thoughts and feelings going into that match with Bryan Danielson?
STRONG: Becky, for over five years, I’ve called Ring of Honor my home. I’ve traveled, sure, I’ve held titles, but I’ve always considered Ring of Honor my home. As FIP Champion, I defended that belt night in and night out in ROH. I’ve been a part of two of the greatest factions this company has ever seen… And yet, I still here a lot of voices out there saying, Roddy can’t get it done. Strong isn’t the one to carry this company… I will prove to this roster, to all these fans, and to bookers and the pushers, that Roderick Strong is the face of ROH… No matter who's back I have to break to get there! I've already beaten one former champion, Bryan Danielson. Your reputation doesn't frighten me. So tonight, you get no remorse from the messiah of the backbreaker.

Bryan Danielson defeated Roderick Strong with a discus elbow smash at 24:12
Match Rating: 4.50

He worked his way up to a Yakuza kick and Danielson was in trouble... GIBSON DRIVER! 1... 2... NO!
Strong kept the punishment up, but Danielson came off the ropes with a shoulder tackle.
They continued back and forth and Danielson would hit a suicide dive and then nail the back superplex back in the ring!
Strong made a comeback, but it was short-lived as Dragon raised a knee to a charge in the corner and then hit a dragon suplex!
Strong would comeback almost immediately countering a choke and hitting the side backbreaker. The Messiah of the backbreaker had already been working Danielson's back over and it led to a nearfall!
Both men were exhausted as we passed the 20 minute mark! The last four minutes were incredible...
Double clotheslines sent both men to the mat hard! Danielson is up first! Dragon Suplex! Tiger Suplex!!
Danielson is feeling it! Roddy is out on his feet as the audience is on theirs!
Discus elbow smash!!!! Misawa style!
A cover! 1, 2, 3!

What a match! What a finish! Clearly Misawa was on Danielson's mind tonight with that string of finishing moves...
Danielson extends for the handshake, but Roddy won't accept! He leaves the ring as Danielson points to the sky and then to all the fans. He leads the fans in a "Misawa, Misawa!" chant...
AJ Styles then makes his way out past Strong and enters the ring. Both men stare each other down. These guys are ready to go, but first they'll both get a rest period for a few matches before locking up in the main event for ROH World Heavyweight Championship!

KEVIN STEEN: Jimmy Jacobs! Your Butcher put my partner down... Put him on the shelf and I didn't see that one comin... Ring of Honor... You strip us of our tag titles?! And I did not see that one coming... Nigel McGuinness vacates the World title... You set up your little tournament for a new champion... And you don't put the partner-less, title-less, Kevin Steen anywhere in it... I definitely did NOT see that one coming! But I don't blame you... Any of you... Not Jacobs, not Butcher, not my partner, El Generico, and not Ring of Honor... But the other thing you've done... The other little thing that's happened... Is very simple... I've always had a chip on my shoulder! It was thiiiiis big [spread fingers a couple inches apart] but now... Now, it's about this big [spreads hands about a foot apart] I have a partner that can't wrestle! I have a title no longer! And I have no opportunity to take what I've worked so hard for! So all that you have done! Each and every single one of you, is create an angry, focused, unstoppable force! And sooner... or later... I'll prove just how wrong you all were... To get in the way of my destiny!
Adam Pearce vs. Austin Aries
Austin Aries defeated Adam Pearce with a pendulum elbow at 7:37
Match Rating: 3.00
Match Notes: This was an intense compact fight.
They jockeyed for position early and Aries would hit a slingshot senton, but Pearce came back and even slapped on the figure four!
Aries was in trouble as Pearce scored multiple nearfalls starting with a powerslam and even hitting a superfly splash.
Aries would reverse a vertical suplex, tho and took the fight right back to Pearce! Still, Pearce dodged a dropkick in the corner, but Aries dodged a dropkick himself and dropped a wicked pendulum elbow to score a quick pinfall!
Pearce couldn't believe it! Aries rolled outside still feeling the effects of the beating he took early on. BJ Whitmer and Brent Albright made their way out and had Aries backed into a corner! Pearce was ready to pounce, but Tyler Black and Jimmy Jacobs are out!
Jacobs had said on multiple occasions that he wanted to add Aries to the Age of the Fall... But a lot of water is under the bridge since then, including Aries "stealing" Lacey away... If you could call it that... Would this "rescue" change things or is it all a wicked game?
The standoff finally ends when Necro Butcher makes his way out with a chain and the Hangman 3 head for the hills.
Jacobs is saying "I forgive you, join us" over and over, but eventually Aries backs off and leaves to the back... Black and Jacobs follow up the ramp...

Brodie Lee defeated Brent Albright with a BIG BOOT at 7:55
Match Rating: 2.75
Match Notes: This is the match to crown the first ever ROH World Television Champion!
Both men won their respective Four Way Mayhem matches to get them into this bout.
Albright started things off with a headlock takedown, but Brodie Lee was able to fight it off and then spent the next 7 minutes beating Albright pillar to post!
He scored a nearfall with a chokeslam and action spilled outside shortly after.
Lee whipped him into the steel steps and took the fight to him in and out of the ring.
A BIG BOOT ended the match in under 8 minutes and Brodie Lee is the first ROH World Television Champion!
Pearce and Whitmer are here! But before they can accomplish anything, Jacobs and Black are out and the Hangman 3 begrudgingly leave the area...
Jacobs grabs a mic...
JACOBS: Brodie, Brodie, Brodie... You and I both know the struggle it's been to get you to this moment... You hold your dreams in your hand now, but do they even matter? In a world that has looked down upon you, treated you with scorn, made you an outside, can a belt really mean all that much? The whole reason the Age of the Fall came to be was to bring hope to the disenfranchised. A voice to the voiceless. And Brodie Lee, I can promise you more than a title. I can promise you respect, I can give you power, and I can help you bring even more prestige to what you've earned tonight. I'll give you that promise... All you have to do... Is join us.
The crowd is chanting "just say no" and "shut the f**k up", respectively... Brodie stares, wide eyed into Jacobs eyes for a few moments and then slides out of the ring and leaves Jacobs without an answer...

BECKY: We're backstage with the American Wolves as they prepare for the Tag Team Championship finals! Eddie Edwards, how are you after the match earlier tonight?
EDWARDS: How am I? I'm a wolf that's tasted his own blood, that's how I am. And when that happens, he becomes even more dangerous.
BECKY: But can you guys be 100% going into the tag title finals?
RICHARDS: It doesn't matter. There is only one thing that matters tonight. We... Make Ring of Honor about the American Wolves. Plain and Simple!
EDWARDS: That's right! We're talking history right here! We ARE history! We will BE history! So a hundred percent or not, we make no excuses. We just prepare for war... You are looking at the greatest tag team in Ring of Honor. And tonight we will make that a fact!

Davey Richards defeated Chris Hero with a BRAINBUSTER at 10:37

Richards and Castagnoli start the match off and go back and forth in the opening moments, but Claudio takes over and gets a nearfall after a giant swing!
Royal Bomb! Hero loads the elbow pad, but Richards ducks it and sends Hero out of the ring!
The action would see saw, but Richards took most of the punishment as Edwards rode the apron. It was a wise strategy considering the beating he took earlier, but after a sick Hangman's elbow, Richards made the desperation tag and it may have been the difference maker!
Edwards was in quickly and hit a strong shoulder off the ropes. He worked the quick tag and he and Richards hit a military press/kick to head combo and the Wolves smelled blood!

NIGEL: Bryan! Congratulations... Congratulations on being a placeholder! You NEVER beat me! And that's still my belt! As soon as I'm cleared to get back in that ring, you better say your prayers, because I will tap you out in the middle of the ring and take back what is still rightfully mine! Enjoy your hollow victory, celebrate while you can, but know your days are numbered!
BRYAN: Nigel, you can try to steal this moment from me, but you can't steal this belt! Everyone here knows that I am willing to do whatever it takes to restore the honor you've taken from this title.
