Card 71 – LA Grand Olympic Auditorium:
(Many wrestlers taking a rest after NIGHT OF THE LIVING LEGENDS so a chance for some lesser lights to shine. It’s at the same venue but a very different atmosphere being half full. Johnny Valentine gives some star power to the show as takes on Buddy Rose. So much for trying to knock out a quick card. This took over an hour to play)
Johnny Valentine beat Buddy Rose by count-out. Rose runs this much closer than we can ever of imagined. Nearly pinned Valentine early doors with one of the clumsiest deathjumps you’re ever likely to see and later hitting the mark with BOMBS AWAY. I suppose it’s the mark of a great wrestler to have an off day and still find a way to win. Valentine manages it after a brawl outside. Gets a killer blow in that leaves Rose looking a bit light headed and Valentine slides under the bottom rope to just about beat the count back in.
Valiant Brothers see off the Grapplers. Neither team comes up for air in a brilliant match. Gotch had 7 tokens by the end but refused to be pinned. In fact it was Hutton who was the one who lost it for them. Having survived TOP ROPE ELBOW in the first few minutes he couldn’t repeat the feat later.
Jim Brunzell upsets King Kong Bundy with a DQ win. Big size mismatch but aren’t they all against Bundy. No Bobby Heenan with him this time. Becomes a frustrating match for Bundy as he cannot finish Brunzell even after AVALANCHE. Bundy hasn’t got the lung power to go more than 10 minutes and Brunzell starts to get a foothold. Rather than suffer ignominy of a pin loss Bundy plays for the DQ. Triggering a brawl and using a chair. He doesn’t even stay to hear the decision. Just staggers up the runway totally gassed and in urgent need of a sit down.
Cowboy Bob Orton gets the better of Chris Candido. Decent back and forth match. Orton eventually hits SUPERPLEX and then gets the pin done with a handful of tights. You could see the ref mulling it over whether to reverse his decision after Tammy Lynn Sytch complained but in the end the result stood.
Ox Baker beat Virgil by DQ. Baker promises to punish Virgil for sticking his nose into Team Extreme business and thwarting an attack on Don Leo Jonathan, growls into the camera “you’ve now drawn yourself into this feud whether you like it or not”. Virgil shows some real spirit though and actually gets so into it that he gets disqualified (third match in a row). Smashing Baker into a table outside. Cool post match from Virgil who points into the camera “I can brawl if I have to. Baker now knows I ain’t no punching bag”.
Goregous George has it surprisingly tough in beating Koko B. Ware. Really exciting stuff as Koko raises his game. Hints at an upset with his GHOSTBUSTER but George survives. Eventually George just has too many sneaky tricks for Koko and just about grabs the win after SPINNING TOE HOLD had Koko in agony.
