This has been such an awesome recap! Thanks so much for sharing. It's been a blast reliving the same time period I started playing through another promoter's eyes. A few comments...
1. I'm very envious of your record keeping. My records are pretty sparse until mid-2088. Great work!
2. I loved the team of Renegade and Pit Viper! Since the original handbook indicated a pairing with Beast Rider and Pulsar, I figured their tag partners might team up. I called Renegade & Viper "Roughhouse" and they were more successful than BR & Pulsar. I remember them having a pretty violent feud with the Gladiators.
3. At the time, I still also played Superstar Pro Wrestling Game, so I split my time between the two games. I know interested waned a little in COTG because of the lack of new characters. The weird thing is, I made up bootlegs of fictional wrestlers for SPW, but never for COTG until 2090 or so.
4. Pretty sure the flier for Galaxian Invasion came out in late 87 or early 88, as you mentioned. That one got me hooked, especially when I read all of the other promoters' events and the two special matches that were included in that newsletter. Having those 12 new wrestlers really got me into the game. Even then, I still didn't play a ton, mostly supercard type shows (my early booking was pretty Russo-riffic!) I've considered doing some house shows from that era, just for fun, especially with the two new Carter characters in the 30th Anniversary Pack.
Awesome reading, looking forward to seeing what's next!

This has been such an awesome recap! Thanks so much for sharing. It's been a blast reliving the same time period I started playing through another promoter's eyes. A few comments... Thank you Chad! I really appreciate the kind words!
1. I'm very envious of your record keeping. My records are pretty sparse until mid-2088. Great work! In retrospect, I did a pretty good job of writing almost everything down. There are definitely some holes during my first year, but I'd say 98% of everything is written in two of those thinner composition notebooks. I'm still writing everything in notebook #2, although my notations are much more in-depth then they were 25+ years ago.
You did this team too--awesome! There seems to be some positive response to this team, so it's neat to encounter someone else that thought of a way to put these two guys together.
3. At the time, I still also played Superstar Pro Wrestling Game, so I split my time between the two games. I know interested waned a little in COTG because of the lack of new characters. The weird thing is, I made up bootlegs of fictional wrestlers for SPW, but never for COTG until 2090 or so. I still have SPW buried in a box somewhere--I friends and I loved that game back in the day. I was so heartbroken when I got the expansion and the names were not the actual names of the wrestlers. Totally makes sense now, but back then I would have never understood that. I made a few wrestler bootlegs for SPW, but the majority I did were creating Marvel Comics characters. My friends always made fun of me because in a match Daredevil dropkicked Galactus and pinned him in a match. If you're unfamiliar with those characters at all, calling that impossible would be nice. My interest dropped after that. DD's dropkick still comes up on occasion.
I wonder for how many people that first expansion saved the game for them. It probably would have sat around for me, especially since I was getting into all the other sports simulation games and they had yearly expansions like clockwork.
Awesome reading, looking forward to seeing what's next! Thank you so much! I was worried that so many bootlegs would turn people off, but it seems like people are enjoying it. Things definitely get crazier!

A lot happened in a dark event, so let's get right into:
The Champions 8/17/88
First Round: Commander Sam defeated Cultist Thantos over Brute Massif beats Actagon Executioner takes out Star Warrior
Between Rounds: Ani-Men (Badger, Ram & Reptillo) beat Spike & Norse Gods (Lightening & Man-Mountain) to successfully defend the Six-Man Tag Team Championship
Semi-Finals: Commander Sam upsets Thantos Massif destroys Executioner
Between Rounds: Bishop Hell beats Christian to become the new Interdimensional Champion
Final: Massif beats Commander Sam to become the new Heavyweight Champion
Main Event: TitanPower defeats Renegade & Pit Viper in a Cosmic Cage to become the new Tag Team Champions
GWF Weekly 8/15-9/12/88
Main Events:
8/15--Actagon over Thantos
9/5--Proteus beats Pit Viper by DQ
9/12--Mesmer over Spike
Pushes:
Good--Adam Blast, Massacre, Christian, Commander Sam
Bad--Cultist, Thantos, Renegade, Bishop Hell, Exo-King
Tag Team--Norse Gods (Lightening & Man-Mountain), Star Warrior & Mesmer, Bomb Squad (Commander Sam & Adam Blast), Spacemen (Meteor & Asteroid), Henchmen (Comrade Terror & Executioner), Ani-Men (Badger & Ram)
Jobbers:
Vanity, Beast Rider, Pulsar, Creeper, Killer Queen, Ghengis Khan, Deathknight
Saturday Night GWF 9/17/88
Match 1: Brute vs. Splatter
Brute has been a monster in solo competition, even if he didn't fare well at The Champions. Splatter is a disqualification machine due to his wild unpredictable style. Therefore, it was only fitting that Splatter wins the match by DQ.
Match 2: Spacemen (Meteor & Asteroid) vs. Ghengis Khan & Creeper
The Spacemen have reunited since Meteor took some time off and Asteroid was teaming with Massacre. Something seemed a bit off about them, though; the Spacemen were a lot more aggressive than they used to be. Khan & Creeper tried to keep up, but were DQed for going just over-the-top.
Match 3: Star Warrior & Mesmer vs. Norse Gods (Lightening & Man-Mountain)
The Norse Gods had finally started to put it together and figure out how to win consistently as a team. Trying to fit in an extra part was not helping them in six-man matches, but the Norse Gods did not have one tonight, and they took down one of the upper-tier tag teams in SW & Mesmer
Match 4: Renegade & Pit Viper vs. Henchmen (Comrade Terror & Executioner)
Losing their feud and Tag Team Championship to TitanPower, Renegade & Pit Viper refused to start again from the bottom and took on the new top contenders for the belts. The Henchmen were shocked that they were unable to control the match, and ended up losing to the former champions.
Match 5: Bishop Hell vs. Actagon for Interdimensional Championship
Bishop Hell was ecstatic to have the belt back, and gave his first title defense to an old foe. As always, Hell tried to bend the rules, but got DQ'ed for his use of HELLFIRE.
Match 6: Massif vs. Commander Sam for Galaxian Heavyweight Championship
The rematch of The Champions tournament final went a lot closer than most people expected. Massif was on top of his game, and the aging veteran was not expected to be making a championship run. As in the first match between them, this match also was a back-and-forth showcase for both men. When facing the Hierarchy though, it's only a matter of time before Cultist gets involved, and that was no different here. Having enough of Sam's ability to fight back, Cultist entered the ring and along with Massif double-teamed the challenger. The ref called for the bell, but the assault did not end until Star Warrior and Mesmer came out from the back to chase away Cultist and Massif.
Champion List: Champion--Massif (8/17) Interdimensional--Bishop Hell (8/17) Tag Team--TitanPower (Lord Nexus & Billy Joe Boxer) (8/17) Six-Man Tag Team--Ani-Men (Badger, Ram & Reptillo) (7/4)
Top Ten Contenders (they're back!) 1. Commander Sam 2. Cultist 3. Brute 4. Christian 5. Executioner 6. Exo-King 7. Thantos 8. Actagon 9. Bishop Hell 10. Massacre
Next Time: Oh boy, more bootlegs

Very cool to see TitanPower at the top of a very talented pool of tag teams... And I'm still having difficulty picturing Massif as a villain... Not sure why, considering how well Andre slid into the mold back in the day... Just something about that 'gentle giant' stigma, I guess...
Can't wait to see these new boots that are about to be unleashed... Fun stuff!

Can't wait to see these new boots that are about to be unleashed... Fun stuff! It's funny when you have difficulty with things in other people's feds.....I had no idea there were color versions of all the characters until I got fully back into it earlier this year, and a lot of the times the colors are NOT what I've had in my head. Because of that, I constantly have to check who people are when reading feds that use the mini-characters (which are awesome). For instance, I always pictured Massif wearing green instead of blue, Tongsoon being orange instead of green (why, I don't know), and Krakan's pants not being so brightly colored. I'm getting better, though.... I guess my Massif is more Big Show when he was actually a threat. If it's any consolation, I'm pretty sure Cultist and Bishop Hell handle the majority of the really messed up stuff. Always good to hear your thoughts!

I guess even with the Invasion guys coming in, I found a couple of character holes in the roster that I needed filled. So, for the first and only time in 1988 I created two new wrestlers, both of which followed the "I'm too lazy to make a playing card, so I'll play out their matches elsewhere" style that my 16-year old self became fond of. Not only was I recreating matches during walks home from school, or bored-thinking-time, but also assigned the characters to actual wrestlers while watching "Tuesday Night Titans" or "Saturday Night's Main Event". Then I would record the results as if the CotG guys fought the match. You get creative when you're a lazy teenager.
Anyway, the two new (good) guys are:
Zodiac--not only does he change names when fighting under the different astrological signs, but he actually changes forms as well. So, during Taurus, he's a bull, etc., etc.
Ninja--because ninjitsu was the most rad thing ever, and every good anything needs a ninja.
Both open up with wins over Deathknight on 9/19 and 9/26, respectively.
GWF Weekly 9/19-10/10/88
Main Events:
10/3--Exo-King beats Proteus
10/10--Gemini (Dark & Light) beat Henchmen (Comrade Terror & Executioner) by DQ
Pushes:
Good--Zodiac: Libra, Adam Blast, Ninja, Brute, Christian
Bad--Comrade Terror, Executioner, Bishop Hell, Splatter, Thantos
Tag Team--TitanPower (Lord Nexus & Billy Joe Boxer), Renegade & Pit Viper, Spacemen (Meteor & Asteroid), Gemini (Dark & Light), Norse Gods (Lightening & Man- Mountain), Star Warrior & Mesmer, Ani-Men (Badger, Ram & Reptillo)
Jobbers:
Deathknight, Creeper, Killer Queen, Ghengis Khan, Pulsar, Beast Rider, Vanity, Krakan II, Adam Blast
Saturday Night GWF 10/15/88
Match 1: Spike vs. Actagon
The young Gladiator continued to try to prove himself to the veteran Aethrans, and continued to fail. He showed the tenacity and viciousness that the Gladiators enjoy, but could not figure out how to turn it into a win. Actagon let the rookie make his mistakes, and came away with a DQ victory.
Match 2: Bomb Squad vs. Renegade & Pit Viper
Renegade & Viper seemed poised to get an eventual rematch for the Tag Team Championship as they beat everyone in their path. Until tonight. The Bomb Squad had middling success until they scored a huge upset victory, infuriating the former champs and causing a huge screaming match after the bell.
Match 3: Zodiac: Libra vs. Ghengis Khan
Typical jobber match thrown in the middle of the card to calm things down. Zodiac continues to impress in his first few weeks.
Match 4: TitanPower (Lord Nexus & Billy Joe Boxer) vs. Norse Gods (Lightening & Man-Mountain) in a non-title match
The Norse Gods had been having some recent success, but with Renegade & Pit Viper and the Henchmen blocking their path, they accepted a non-title match to hopefully defeat the Tag Team Champions and put their names in contention. The Gods gave the champs quite a fight, but TitanPower proved why they held the belts, and won the pinfall.
Match 5: Cultist vs. Mesmer
Mesmer had been slowly climbing up the singles rankings continually scoring impressive wins. The higher you climb, the tougher competition you'll face, and it was time to battle the man who has gained a large footprint in the GWF, Cultist. Cultist showed no mercy, constantly using illegal tactics to gain advantage. Even without the help of his Hierarchy at ringside, Cultist managed to hide things from the ref, and was able to get a victory after using various foreign objects. Star Warrior made sure to come out after the match to make sure no further damage was done.
Match 6: Massif vs. Brute for Galaxian Heavyweight Championship
Finally, Brute was getting his title shot. The Gladiator had been mowing down the competition for months, and was prepared to take on the big champion. Brute did not seem to be prepared for Cultist, who did everything he could to make sure the belt would not leave his stable. Eventually, Cultist had enough, and blatantly entered the ring so he and Massif could double-team the challenger. The ref called for the bell, and then for help to stop the assault on Brute.
Champion List: Champion--Massif (8/17) Interdimensional--Bishop Hell (8/17) Tag Team--TitanPower (Lord Nexus & Billy Joe Boxer) (8/17) Six-Man Tag Team--Ani-Men (Badger, Ram & Reptillo) (7/4)
Top Ten Contenders: 1. Commander Sam 2. Christian 3. Brute 4. Cultist 5. Thantos 6. Exo-King 7. Actagon 8. Bishop Hell 9. Massacre 10. Mesmer
Next time: Lead up to the Thanksgiving Spectacular

The concept for Zodiac seems like it would be really fun... And since he worked his matches within your imagination, I guess you didn't have to develop any complex mechanics to deal with his different forms...
Always wondered why there has never been a shape-shifter introduced as an official character... I think there might be a werewolf (or something similar) in GWFZ... But, the closest GWF has ever come is Buck Steele with his angry Genocide persona...
As for ninjas, you're certainly right... And I guess the GWF got their dose when Demon and Hydra came along...
Cool stuff!

10/31--Incredible Badger wins 10-man battle royal
11/7--Star Warrior & Slicer defeat Cultist & Bishop Hell
11/21--Mesmer beats Splatter by DQ
Pushes:
Good--Christian, Massacre, Ninja, Zodiac: Scorpio, Brute, Slicer, Lord Nexus, Commander Sam, Billy Joe Boxer
Bad--Exo-King, Bishop Hell, Splatter, Spike, Thantos
Tag Team--Spacemen (Meteor & Asteroid), Henchmen (Comrade Terror & Executioner), Renegade & Pit Viper, Greek Gods (Proteus & Actagon), Christian & Mesmer, Bomb Squad (Commander Sam & Adam Blast), Norse Gods ( Lightening & Man-Mountain), TitanPower (Lord Nexus & Billy Joe Boxer), Gemini (Dark & Light)
Jobbers:
Beast Rider, Pulsar, Vanity, Killer Queen, Deathknight, Adam Blast, Reptillo, Creeper, Ghengis Khan, Krakan II
Saturday Night GWF 11/12/88
Match 1: Ninja vs. Killer Queen
Last month, Zodiac was the new wrestler showcased on SNGWF, this time Ninja gets the spotlight. His finisher is a spinning heel kick directly to his opponent's face; he showed how impressive a move it is as he used it to get the victory over Killer Queen.
Match 2: Massacre vs. Exo-King
Both of these men had been pretty silent as of late. Outside of picking up victories against lesser opponents, these wrestlers had not really fought anyone tough in an attempt to raise their profile (although Exo beat Proteus on GWF Weekly 10/3). The rust on Massacre showed as Exo-King picked up a somewhat easy victory.
Match 3: Christian & Mesmer vs. Massif & Man-Mountain
Lately, Christian had found himself making a pretty decent tag team with Mesmer. The Norse Gods were not a part of the Hierarchy at all, but had found that partnering the two big men made quite an imposing team. Massif had a little history with the Norse Gods, as they asked him to fill out a team to challenge the Ani-Men for the Six-Man Tag Titles back in July. While the big men were intimidating, Man-Mountain was not as agile as Massif, and ended up getting pinned by Mesmer.
Match 4: Actagon vs. Lightening
The other half of the Norse Gods rekindled a long-running feud with the Greek Gods. Lightening showed he could handle being a solo competitor by taking down his rival, continuing the ineffectiveness the Greeks had against the Norse.
Match 5: TitanPower (Lord Nexus & Billy Joe Boxer) vs. Henchmen (Comrade Terror & Executioner) for Galaxian Tag Team Championship
Despite losing to Renegade & Pit Viper last month on SNGWF, the Henchmen continued to be the number one contenders for the tag title. They fought like they would never get another chance, taking it hard to TitanPower. At one point, Billy Joe Boxer tags in Lord Nexus for a double-team, but the Executioner ducks and Nexus takes out his partner. The Henchmen then double-teamed Nexus and got the victory. As the new champions left the ring, Nexus went to check to make sure BJB was OK. Billy Joe repaid his concern by punching him out and then standing there yelling over the downed Nexus.
Match 6: Bishop Hell vs. Star Warrior for the Interdimensional Championship
These two met a few days back in a tag match as Slicer finally made his comeback from the injuries inflicted on him by the Bishop. During that match, Cultist was taunting Star Warrior more than usual at a consistent and almost hypnotic pace. That continued in this match as well. Eventually, Cultist throws a chair into the ring, and keeps daring SW to hit Bishop Hell with it. Warrior keeps trying to ignore the commands, but eventually breaks down, smashes Hell with it and gets disqualified. As Cultist heads backstage, he keeps staring at Star Warrior, nodding his head. Star Warrior is left in the ring confused at his actions.
Champions List: Champion--Massif (8/17) Interdimensional--Bishop Hell (8/17) Tag Team--Henchmen (Comrade Terror & Executioner) (11/12) Six-Man Tag Team--Ani-Men (Badger, Ram & Reptillo) (7/4)
Top 10 Contenders 1. Christian 2. Brute 3. Commander Sam 4. Cultist 5. Exo-King 6. Thantos 7. Bishop Hell 8. Actagon 9. Massacre 10. Mesmer

Thanksgiving Spectacular 11/24/88
Match 1: Zodiac: Sagittarius vs. Krakan II
Unfortunately for Krakan, his son has been demoted to jobber status. Zodiac runs his undefeated career start to 5 matches with the win.
Match 2: Splatter vs. Massacre
While these two fought at Wrestlestar II, this was more of a climbing-the-ladder contest rather than a rematch. When a match has Splatter in it, odds are a DQ is going to happen. This time, it goes in Splatter's favor. This is the first time one of Krakan's men has won a match at a pay-per-view since Comrade Terror (then in the Society of Death) beat Massacre in last year's Thanksgiving Spectacular.
Match 3: Ani-Men (Badger, Ram & Reptillo) vs. Anti-Men (Exo-King, Deathknight & Killer Queen?) for the Six-Man Tag Team Championship
I gave myself no indication who these "Anti-Men" are (what an AWFUL name for such a testosterone-fueled sport) and had to figure it out based on who wasn't on the card. Above is who I came up with, hence the question mark. Obviously, the mysterious Anti-Men don't win, but the Ani-Men get the victory by count-out
Match 4: Greek Gods vs. Norse Gods
After a brief war with the Ani-Men, the Norse Gods have renewed their rivalry with the other god faction. The Norse Gods had dominated in contests against the Greeks, but for the first time, the Greek Gods come out on top in this match.
Match 5: Brute vs. Spike in a Gladiator Match
After failing to impress the Gladiators in his first year as a wrestler, Spike was forced into another "tough love" match with his fellow Aethran, Brute. These two had met in August on Saturday Night GWF with Brute winning by DQ. The Gladiator Match meant there had to be a clear winner (although I have no idea if there was anything else special about this match), and it should come as no surprise that once again, Spike gets pinned.
Match 6: Spacemen (Meteor & Asteroid) vs. Gemini (Dark & Light)
When the Spacemen returned back in September, they fought with a chip on their shoulder, and over time have fought more like heels than when they first started. Gemini returned to action over the last few weeks after Dark's injury at the hands of Massif and Bishop Hell, and had ditched Krakan as their manager. They were not quite the bumbling tag team that they once were, but had the fans on their side as they were thought of more as "lovable losers". With both teams having their roles reversed since their last match, they fought quite differently and ultimately, the match ended in a double DQ.
Match 7: Henchmen (Comrade Terror & Executioner) vs. Renegade & Pit Viper for Galaxian Tag team Championship
Renegade & Pit Viper were not upset that the Henchmen got a title shot, even though Thantos' men had lost to the former champs a month before on Saturday Night GWF. They waited patiently, knowing it would not be long before they got a shot at regaining the belts. The Henchmen did not let the fact they lost to their opponents previously affect them, and the match was a slugfest. The champs proved that they are worthy of their titles by downing the challengers.
Match 8: Cultist vs. Mesmer
Mesmer had been teaming with Christian as of late, and anyone becoming friendly with Cultist's arch-nemesis was going to gain the attention of the Satanic one. Since the other members of the Hierarchy were fighting in the next two matches, Cultist fought this match alone, reducing the chance of a double-team that had been the outcome of so many frequent matches involving the group. That didn't stop Cultist from using his assortment of dirty tricks and foreign objects. Eventually, things went too far outside the ring, and the ref called for the bell. Mesmer wins by DQ.
Match 9: Bishop Hell vs. Christian for Interdimensional Championship in a Chain Match
Christian finally gets the rematch for the title he lost to the Bishop at The Champions in August. Both men used the chain to their advantage, and the match was a brutal bloodfest. Eventually, Cultist came down to join his man, and the ref immediately started yelling at him to leave. While the ref and Cultist were engaged, Star Warrior ran down to the ring. Since the ref's back was to Star Warrior, he was able to easy slip into the ring to thwart Cultist's plan. The fans who had been cheering like crazy suddenly were stunned to silence as Star Warrior grabbed the chain, wrapped it around Christian's neck and choked him out. When SW left the ring, Cultist disengaged from the ref, who turned back to the match and easily counted to three. After throwing Christian out of the ring, Bishop Hell was joined by Cultist and Star Warrior and all three stood with their hands raised...together.
Match 10: Massif vs. Commander Sam for Galaxian Heavyweight Championship in a Cosmic Cage with a top
The promoters were not pleased with the current run-ins during Massif's matches as of late, so this contest was put in a cage and a top put on it so that the only mode of escape was through the door. The door was also heavily guarded so the only people in or out would be the match participants. Commander Sam gave it a good run, but Massif was too strong and too nasty to give him a chance. Once the champion successfully defended his title, he was joined in the ring by Cultist, Bishop Hell, and their apparent new recruit Star Warrior, to gloat and show the fans that what they saw earlier was not a mirage.

GWF Weekly 11/28-12/12/88
Main Event:
12/12--Christian and Exo-King fought to a Double DQ
Pushes:
Good--Zodiac: Sagittarius, Ninja, Actagon, Slicer
Bad--Thantos, Billy Joe Boxer, Splatter
Tag Team--Henchmen (Comrade Terror & Executioner), Brute & Massacre, Renegade & Pit Viper, Ani-Men (Badger, Ram & Reptillo)
Jobbers:
Beast Rider, Adam Blast, Ghengis Khan, Killer Queen, Vanity, Creeper, Deathknight, Pulsar
Saturday Night GWF 12/17/88
Match 1: Billy Joe Boxer vs. Commander Sam
In his first match after losing in the cage to Massif, Sam wanted to prove he was still a top contender. BJB was facing his first big-name opponent since he clobbered Lord Nexus last month after losing the Tag Team Championship. Sam had the edge and used it, beating the boxer and making him wonder if he's made the right choices.
Match 2: Slicer vs. Spike
Did anyone else have this many problems getting Spike going in their fed? How did he become the poster boy? Spike loses by DQ.
Match 3: Brute & Massacre vs. Renegade & Pit Viper
The Gladiators have reunited for good at last! Seeing a sudden weakness in the tag team circuit, the Aethrans reformed to take their rightful place atop the rankings. They didn't waste any time going after the big guns either--their former friend Renegade and Pit Viper were still considered one of the top teams, even after failing to capture the belts at the Thanksgiving Spectacular. While Renegade was privy to both men's tricks after being a tag champ with each of them, the Gladiators proved they are devastating when together. Viper eventually let them get under his skin, and he was DQ'ed.
Match 4: Ani-Men (Badger, Ram & Reptillo) vs. Anti-Men (Exo-King, Deathknight & Killer Queen) for the Six-Man Tag Team Championship
The rematch from the Thanksgiving Spectacular. This time the Ani-Men won the straight pinfall, and the mysterious Anti-Men were never heard from again.
Match 5: Ninja vs. Cultist
This was Ninja's first big-name opponent, and he did not back down from the challenge. A chorus of boos rained down upon Cultist , and it got worse when Star Warrior headed to the ring during the match. Ninja ran out to greet him, and SW did nothing until Cultist attacked Ninja from behind. The two fought outside the ring, and eventually foreign objects came into play. The ref let things go for a bit, but as things escalated he had to disqualify both men.
Match 6: Greek Gods vs. Norse Gods in a Cosmic Cage
The war ends here. With the Greeks finally coming through and beating the Norse at the Thanksgiving Spectacular, the feud was no longer one-sided and had to end. Despite all the problems they had with the Norse, they ended on a winning streak, leaving both men defeated inside the cage.
Champions List Champion--Massif (8/17) Interdimensional--Bishop Hell (8/17) Tag Team--Henchmen (Comrade Terror & Executioner) (11/12) Six-Man Tag Team--Ani-Men (Badger, Ram & Reptillo) (7/4)
Top Ten Contenders: 1. Brute 2. Christian 3. Cultist 4. Thantos 5. Exo-King 6. Bishop Hell 7. Commander Sam 8. Massacre 9. Mesmer 10. Actagon
Next time: Invasion II arrives!
