Card #4: January 28, 2009. Boston, MA – Boston Garden
LWF US Title Tournament – Quarterfinals
Match 1: Giant Baba (1) v. Killer Kowalski (8) Kowalski’s upset win over Bobo Brazil two week ago coupled with Baba’ s international success make this a very interesting match up. The two big men battle it out with power moves. Kowalski wins a brawl at ringside and then traps Baba in a CLAW HOLD moments later. Baba submits in front of the Japanese media and Kowalski proves to his doubters he belongs in this tournament. * 1/2
Match #2: Gorgeous George w/Cherie Dupré (4) v. Nick Bockwinkel (5) Great heat for George as he takes several minutes to “prepare” for his match. The crowd backs Bockwinkel but it is all George from the opening bell. A pair of Gorgeous Grips sends Bockwinkel to the floor and George follows him out ramming Bockwinkel’s face into the steel rails by the fans. Bockwinkel is busted open and Dupré is unable to distract the referee resulting in George being disqualified after only seven moves. (dud)
Match #3: Buddy Rogers (2) v. Bobo Brazil (7) The crowd is hot for this one before the bell given the long history between these two competitors. A back and forth classic. Rogers is busted open mid way through the match but survives a COCO BUTT and later manages to grab the ropes to escape a bearhug. Rogers makes a comeback and Brazil barely makes it to the ropes to break up a FIGURE FOUR GRAPEVINE. They trade moves until Rogers ducks a flying dropkick and connects with one of his own. Rogers comes off the top onto Brazil’s knee with a deathjump smash setting up a FIGURE FOUR GRAPEVINE. Brazil cannot escape this time and Rogers advances to the semi-finals. ****
Match #4: Frank Gotch (3) v. Harley Race (6) A fan at ringside has a sign “tman picks Gotch.” Handshake starts the action and the crowd is on the edge of their seats. Gotch immediately takes Race to the mat with an Iowa backdrop and never lets him up. A figure four leglock (ch) ends the match is less than 10 moves (Race is bitten by Snake Eyes!) What a shocker! (dud)
Bill Apter welcomes LWF Tag Team Champions Greg & Johnny Valentine. Johnny tells us what an honour it is to be able to team with his son and hold the LWF Tag Team Titles together. Greg tells everyone they beat every team they faced in the tournament cleanly so there can be no doubt about who is the undisputed Tag Team Champions. Johnny Valentine talks about respect and that some teams just don’t have it. Teams that try and buy their way to the top instead of earn it. That comment brings out Ted DiBiase and Virgil. Heated words are exchanged and Virgil looks like he my take a shot at Apter. Greg Valentine shove Virgil back starting wild melee starts. Security arrives to break the two teams apart. Johnny Valentine grabs the mic and promises to teach DiBiase about honour next week if he has the guts to get into the ring.
LWF US Title Tournament – Semi-Finals Match 5: Killer Kowalski v. Nick Bockwinkel Bockwinkel head is bandaged up and he continues to get the fans support tonight. Bockwinkel slows down Kowalski with a pair of abdominal stretches forcing Kowalski to the floor. Bockwinkel follows and rams Kowalski’s face into the steel rails by the fans busting Kowalski open. The bell signifies the disqualification and Kowalski is into the finals. The fans are not pleased. (dud)
Match 6: Buddy Rogers v. Frank Gotch The crowd is leery after two poor quality matches in a row but gets into this match when the action starts at a quick pace. A jumping knee smash gives Rogers a 2 count a few moves in. Rogers goes up top but Gotch blocks the deathjump with a boot to the face. Guillotine choke sets up a GOTCH TOE HOLD. Rogers manages to roll and kick Gotch off. Gotch however is possessed and locks in the hold again. Rogers cannot escape a second time and submits in the middle of the ring. **
Match 7: Red Bastien v. King Kong Bundy Solid pop for Bastien. It is Bundy’s LWF debut and looks just massif in the ring with Bastien. A long, long match with plenty of mid level offense. Bastien does a great job of avoiding Bundy’s power moves and dominates most of the match with neckbreakers, elbow drops and front face locks. The occasional flying head scissors brings the crowd back to life but for the most part the fans are not interested. Bundy brings the fans back to their feet when he mounts the buckles for a deathjump smash. Bastien is able to roll clear and Bundy crashes to the mat shaking the ring posts. Bastien covers for the three count. **
LWF US Title Tournament - Finals
Match 8: Frank Gotch v. Killer Kowalski Commissioner Cox is seated at ringside ready to present the Title Belt to the winner. Kowalski’s head is bandaged but both men appear ready for battle. Gotch has difficulty countering Kowalski’s size in the opening moves. A pair of Iowa backdrops forces Kowalski to the floor. Gotch follows and the two men tear up ringside. The referee gets in the middle and Kowalski shoves the official to the floor and the fight continues. The bell sounds, Kowalski has been disqualified. The crowd hates the decision but still gives Gotch a solid ovation when he is presented with the United States Title. (dud)

Tman make the right pick and Gotch is the United States Champion. His first defense of the title will be in three weeks in White Plains New York. We are just two weeks away from the LWF’s debut at Madison Square Garden where Johnny & Greg Valentine will defend the LWF Tag Team Titles against Ted DiBiase & Virgil in the main event. But first, the LWF presents an All-Star card in Springfield, MA. Here is the line up.
Jimmy & Johnny Valiant face the struggling Last of the Famous International Playboys. The Valiant Brothers are looking to move up the Tag Team rankings by taking advantage of the Playboys who have yet to pick up a win this year
Bobo Brazil will try to claim his first win of the year when he steps into the ring with the surprising Gorgeous George
Jimmy Snuka has promised the fans to run Playboy Buddy Rose out of the LWF and will get his opportunity in Springfield when they meet one on one
Red Bastien clashes with Buddy Rogers. The winner will have to be considered for a title shot in the near future. These two are no strangers to one another so this should be a solid contest
The Sandman & Ox Baker eliminated the Road Warriors from the Tag Team Title Tournament last month and the Warriors will have their first opportunity for payback when these teams meet in a bout that is surely to feature plenty of brawling.
After being knocked out by Virgil with a pair of brass knuckles last month, Harley Race has demanded a match with Virgil in the ring, anywhere, anytime. Race gets his wish in Springfield, but with a twist. Ted DiBiase has insisted on a Brass Knuckles Match! Will Race get his revenge or will Virgil’s boxing background give him the advantage and the biggest win of his career. One thing is for sure, this one is going to get bloody.
Ted DiBiase has accepted Johnny Valentine’s Hotseat challenge and will face Valentine one on one in a preview of the main event at Madison Square Garden in two weeks
In the main event, The Destroyer puts his LWF Title up against the man he defeated in the Title Tournament final, Dick Hutton.

Card #5: February 4, 2009. Springfield, MA – Civic Center Exhibit Hall
Match 1: The Last of the Famous International Playboys v. Jimmy & Johnny Valiant Solid heat for the Valiant Brothers. The Playboys are over with the ladies at ringside. Johnny comes off the ropes with a shoulder tackle that downs Brutus Beefcake. Johnny lands a kick to the groin and covers Beefcake for the three count while Jimmy blocks Buff Bagwell from making the save. The bout is over in 2 moves! (dud)
Match 2: Bobo Brazil v. Gorgeous George w/Cherie Dupré Huge heat for George while Dupré disinfects the ring. Monster pop for Brazil. Brazil dominates the match with his power moves but George is difficult to finish off surviving a pair of COCO BUTTS and a bear hug. The action settles down into a stalemate that ends up at ringside. George cracks Brazil across the back with a chair while Dupré distracts the official. Brazil muscles the chair away and decks George. This time the referee sees the chair shot and disqualifies Brazil. George and Dupré flee ringside leaving an irate Brazil with his disappointed fans. ***
Match 3: Jimmy Snuka v. Playboy Buddy Rose Classic heat for Rose who demands to be announced at 217 pounds instead of 271. This match is the first opportunity for Snuka to make good on his promise to run Rose out of the LWF. Snuka starts quickly. A flying headbutt sends Rose to the floor. Snuka suplexes Rose back into the ring and ends the match with a SUPERFLY LEAP (5) after just 5 moves. The fans love it. (dud).
Match 4: Road Warriors v. Ox Baker & The Sandman Baker taunts Gary Michael Cappetta but the Warriors storm the ring and go on the attack. The action never stops from there. A spike piledriver nearly cripples Baker. Animal battering rams Baker into the ring post head first busting Baker open. Sandman is able to tag into the match after Hawk misses a falling double hammer at ringside. Hawk is busted open from a SINGAPORE CANE shot. Sandman chokes out Hawk at ringside with his Singapore Cane and the referee has finally had enough and disqualifies Sandman. Baker and Sandman keep the beating going after the bell and leave Hawk and Animal dazed in the ring. ***1/2
United States Champion Frank Gotch is Bill Apter’s guest on the Hotseat. Gotch is not the most exciting interview ever but gets the point across that he will be a fighting champion but makes it clear he wants another shot at LWF Champion The Destroyer, the only competitor to beat Gotch in the LWF.
Match 5: Buddy Rogers v. Red Bastien Although it is not official, many insiders consider this to be a number one contender’s match with the winner likely to be the next challenger for the LWF Champion. Solid action from the opening bell. Rogers holds a very slight advantage but really takes over making liberal use a chair at ringside attacking Bastien’s leg. Rogers goes too far when he rams Bastien’s face into the steel rails busting Bastien open. The referee calls for the disqualification and Bastien remains undefeated. Rogers beats Bastien into a bloody mess at ringside. Security is needed to break things up. **1/2
Match 6: Brass Knuckles Match – Harley Race v. Virgil The fans are ready for an absolute brawl. Virgil is bouncing like a prize fighter in one corner and Race is all business in the other. It is all Race from the opening bell. Race chooses to wrestle and punishes Virgil with neckbreakers, suplexes and a pair of PILEDRIVERS. The action spills to the floor and Race unloads with Brass Knuckle punches and Virgil is a bloody mess. Race misses a deathjump and Virgil capitalizes with right hooks and jabs busting Race wide open. Virgil goes up top for a deathjump first drop but Race rolls clear and Virgil crashes to the mat. The referee begins the 10 count. Race is up at 8 and Virgil is counted out. *** ½
Match 7: Ted DiBiase v. Johnny Valentine DiBiase is without Virgil who is unable to return to ringside after the beating he just took. DiBiase pays a fan to polish his boots drawing classic heat. Valentine is a man on a mission and batters DiBiase inside the ring and out. DiBiase is a bloody mess when Valentine drops him with back to back ATOMIC SKULLCRUSHERS. A bandaged up Virgil rolls into the ring breaking up the count but Valentine quickly tosses Virgil to the floor where Greg Valentine arrives to make sure Virgil leaves ringside the hard way. DiBiase takes full advantage of the break and mounts a huge comeback. DiBiase has the match won with a MILLION DOLLAR SLEEPER but Greg Valentine interferes and the match continues. DiBiase and Valentine trade the advantage before DiBiase traps a bloody Valentine in a MILLION DOLLAR SLEEPER. Valentine’s arm drops three times and DiBiase is the winner. It looks like DiBiase is going to stuff Valentine’s mouth full of money but Greg Valentine arrives to prevent DiBiase from insulting his father further. ****
Match 8: LWF Title Match – The Destroyer (ch) v. Dick Hutton Solid reaction for both men from the fans. Handshake starts things off and crowd shows their appreciation. Destroyer wrestles a smart match and nearly steals an early victory with a single leg Boston Crab. Hutton is able to capitalize on his power advantage with a pair of Cowboy backbreakers that force the Champion to the floor. Hutton goes up top for a deathjump smash but Destroyer catches him on the top buckle and tosses him to the mat. Destroyer works quickly with a FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK. Hutton is able to power out but Destroyer immediately drags Hutton to the middle of the ring and wraps it on again. Hutton cannot escape the second time and Destroyer’s first LWF Title defence is a successful one. ***
Someone get Tman on a flight to Vegas....

New York’s Madison Square Garden hosts the next night of action. Every competitor in the LWF wants to be on the card as there is something special about competing in the Garden. Here is the line up:
The Last of the Famous International Playboys continue to look for their first win when they step into the ring with Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff. It will likely be an uphill battle but perhaps some of the Garden magic will rub off on the Playboys.
Jimmy Snuka continues his feud with Playboy Buddy Rose in singles action. Snuka has absolutely dominated Rose in their matches and another victory will likely end this feud and send the Superfly into title contention.
In a rematch from this week, Buddy Rogers will get another shot at Red Bastien. Rogers is hot after dropping a controversial DQ decision to Bastien essentially derailing his drive to the LWF Title.
In another rematch, Bobo Brail looks to get the monkey off his back and actually win a match when he faces Gorgeous George. Brazil looks more frustrated each week.
Killer Kowalski takes on Frank Gotch next week for the United States Title, but the two will be on opposite sides in tag team action at the Garden when Gotch teams with Dick Hutton to take on the team of Kowalski and King Kong Bundy. Who will win this battle of unusual pairings?
The Road Warriors continue their feud with Ox Baker & The Sandman. The Warriors are still looking for a clean victory over Baker & Sandman and rumour has it the Warriors have asked Commissioner Cox for a series of steel cage matches against Baker & Sandman that could start at early as two weeks from now.
The New York fans were upset when it was announced the LWF Title would not be defended in the first card at MSG. Many questioned what Commissioner Cox was thinking. But he has signed a match that should provide the fans with some execellent action as LWF Champion The Destroyer teams with Giant Baba to face Nick Bockwinkel and Harley Race in a return match from the LWF’s first card. Bockwinkel and Race won that match. Race will face Destroyer in two week for the title so there should be solid heat between these two teams.
In the main event, Tag Team Champions Johnny & Greg Valentine defend the titles against Ted DiBiase & Virgil. DiBiase scored a huge win over Johnny Valentine this week and will be looking to continue that success and capture the titles. What kind of condition will Virgil be in after the beating he took this week?

After reading the recent write up of Harley Race's epic battle with The Sheik I have decided to reboot my fed and include more detail in my write ups.
Here is the first card....
Card #1 – The LWF Arena “Night of the Iron Men”
Commissioner Charlie Cox opens the show addressing the fans welcoming them to the LWF Arena where the legends come to compete. The Commissioner is interrupted by Harley Race who demands to know why he is not in tonight’s LWF Title Iron Man Tournament. Cox says there were only four spots open in the tournament and stands by the selections made by the LWF Championship Committee. But Cox acknowledges Race’s past success and grants Race a non title match next card against the winner of the tournament. If Race can beat the LWF Champion cleanly, he will get the first title shot.
Gary Michael Cappetta explains how the tournament will work. Each competitor will face the other once. 20 points will be awarded for a pin or submission victory. 15 points to the winner by count out. 10 points will be awarded for a disqualification victory and 5 points each for a draw.
LWF Title Iron Man Tournament – Round One
Match 1: Giant Baba v. Nick Bockwinkel In a pre-match ceremony for the Japanese media, Baba and Bockwinkel are each presented with flowers. The crowd is more than ready to get things going when the bell finally sounds. Baba escapes a Boston Crab and rolls to the floor where Bockwinkel rams Baba’s face into the ringside table. Baba is able to grab the ropes to escape a FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK but Bockwinkel quickly follows with a piledriver that nearly ends the match. Bockwinkel shocks Baba with a deathjump cross body block for a 2 ¾ count. The crowd bites thinking it is over. Bockwinkel uses a chair on Baba’s knee at ringside drawing great heat from ringside. Baba escapes a figure four leglock (ch) by grabbing the ropes. Baba finally manages to slow the match down tying up Bockwinkel with arm bars and head locks. Baba’s leg gives out during a suplex attempt and Bockwinkel is back on top. Baba comes off the ropes and Bockwinkel chop blocks Baba’s leg out from under him. Outside the ring, Baba eats the ringside table and the when the action returns the ring, Bockwinkel applies a BOCKWINKEL SLEEPER for his first win of the night at 6:39. Dominate performance for Bockwinkel.
Match 2: Frank Gotch v. Buddy Rogers Fantastic heat for the Nature Boy who gives it back to the fans as well as he gets it. Gotch wants to keep things on the mat but Rogers is able to land jumping knee smash and a piledriver for a 2 count. Rogers rocks the crowd with a falling body block off the top of the buckles onto Gotch at ringside. Gotch is barely able to recover. The action evens out but Gotch struggles to keep Rogers on the mat. The match spills to the floor and Rogers comes off the top of the buckles a second time crushing Gotch at ringside. The crowd eats it up. Gotch rolls under the ropes at 8. Later, Gotch trips up Rogers from ringside and rams Roger’s leg off the steel ring post. Gotch goes to work on Roger’s leg with a rolling knee bar. Rogers battles back and stuns Gotch with a jumping knee smash followed by a series of dropkicks for the three count at 6:14.
Match 3: Dick Hutton, The Destroyer & The Sandman v. Ox Baker, Killer Kowalski & King Kong Bundy w/Larry Sharpe The Sandman cracks a beer (over his head) and we are ready for action. Sandman catches Bundy with a flying elbow and a White Russian Legsweep for a 2 ¾ count. The faces make quick tags to keep Baker in the ring. Baker counters Hutton’s clothesline with one of his own and both men are down. Baker avoids a falling double hammer at ringside and Hutton is in trouble. Kowalski punishes Hutton in and out of the ring. Hutton has to grab the ropes to escape the CLAW HOLD. Sandman with a hot tag and goes after Bundy. Bundy is too powerful and stops Sandman with a forearm smash. Baker works over Sandman including a vicious shoulder breaker before Kowalski tags into the match. Kowalski rams Sandman’s face off the ringside table and ends the mach with a FACE CLAW at 6:32.
LWF Title Iron Man Tournament – Round Two
Match 4: Nick Bockwinkel v. Frank Gotch The fans give Bockwinkel a mixed reaction during the introductions but show their appreciation when a handshake starts the bout. Gotch starts strong and takes Bockwinkel to the mat with a double leg takedown and Iowa backdrop. Bockwinkel leads the match to ringside and Gotch eats the ringside table. A back suplex forces Gotch to bail from the ring but Bockwinkel does not let up following Gotch to the floor and ramming Gotch’s face into the steel rails by the fans. Gotch is busted open! The referee calls for the bell, disqualifying Bockwinkel at 1:14. The fans crap on the call and fill the ring with trash.
Match 5: Giant Baba v. Buddy Rogers With the disqualification finish in the previous match, Rogers will win the tournament and the LWF Title with a pinfall or submission victory in this one. The crowd is solidly behind Baba. Nature Boy does not waste anytime and picks up a 2 count seconds into the match after a piledrvier. Baba battles back with a pair of Baba Chops for a 1 count. Baba sends Rogers to the floor but Rogers is able to trip up Baba from outside the ring and rams Baba’s leg off the steel ring post. The referee steps in but Rogers rams Baba’s leg off the post a second time and the official calls for the bell at 1:40 disqualifying Rogers.
The standings after two rounds are Buddy Rogers 20 points; Nick Bockwinkel 20 points, Giant Baba 10 points; Frank Gotch 10 points
Match 6: Playboy Buddy Rose, Greg Valentine & Johnny Valentine v. Bobo Brazil, Jimmy Snuka & Red Bastien Rose draws huge heat demanding to be announced at 217 pounds, not 271. The reaction for Brazil, Snuka & Bastien is off the charts. The reaction only increases when Brazil takes it to Johnny Valentine early in the contest. Valentine is able to tag out to Rose who slows the match down. The bout goes back and forth and never recaptures the excitement of the Brazil – Valentine exchange. Snuka send Greg Valentine into the ropes and shoulder tackles him to the mat. Snuka follows with a backbreaker for the pin out of nowhere at 4:19 while Bastien & Brazil prevent the pin save. No finishers in the match.
LWF Title Iron Man Tournament – Round Three
Match 7: Frank Gotch v. Giant Baba Both men need a clean win to stay in contention for the LWF Tile. Gotch is the clear aggressor with a series of takedowns. Baba bails but Gotch keeps the pressure on ramming Baba’s face into the ringside table. GOTCH TOE HOLD. Baba makes it to the ropes. Gotch has a counter for all of Baba’s attack at one point countering a head butt with an Iowa backdrop for a 2 ¾ count. Gotch continues his attack at ringside ramming Baba’s leg off the steel ring steps drawing heat from the fans. Gotch uses a rolling kneebar and then a GOTCH TOE HOLD. Nick Bockwinkel attempts to attack Gotch from behind but Gotch sees him coming and slams him onto Baba. Bockwinkel rolls to the floor and Gotch covers Baba for the pin at 3:27. Bockwinkel is clearly upset at himself by not causing a disqualification finish which would have eliminated both Baba & Gotch from the tournament.
Match 8: Buddy Rogers v. Nick Bockwinkel The fans are quickly working out the possibilities during the introductions. Any win by Rogers by pin, disqualification or otherwise gives him the LWF Title. Bockwinkel can only capture the title on a count-out, pinfall or submission victory. If Bockwinkel wins by disqualification, Frank Gotch will win the tournament by virtue of his own disqualification win over Bockwinkel earlier tonight. A draw also gives Gotch the Title. Conservative start with counters from both men. Bockwinkel avoids Rogers’ falling double hammer and Rogers crashes hard into the ring rails. Bockwinkel with a deathjump cross body block moments later for a ½ count. Bockwinkel goes up to the top again but Rogers catches him and tosses Bockwinkel to the mat. The action evens out. Both men block each others backdrops with piledrivers. Rogers takes flight with a deathjump smash from the top of the buckles but Bockwinkel rolls clear and Rogers crash lands. Bockwinkel covers for a 1 count. Bockwinkel plants Rogers with a piledriver for a 2 count and then takes the fight to the floor starting a violent brawl. The referee comes out and warns both men to take the fight back into the ring but they don’t and both men are counted out of the ring at 6:07. The fight continues until security arrives to break things up.
Commissioner Charlie Cox presents Frank Gotch with the LWF Title in a post match ceremony. Harley Race interrupts the proceedings and gets into a stare down with Gotch pointing to the title and then to himself. Race grabs the mic and congratulates Gotch on his back door tournament win. Race tells Gotch that he may have beaten three of the best in the LWF tonight but he did not beat the best (pointing to himself). Gotch responds telling Race he will have his chance to prove whether or not he is one of the best next card.
Booker’s Notes: Congrats to Frank Gotch who came from behind to walk away with the LWF Title. He faces Harley Race in a non title match on the next card, if Race wins; he gets a shot at the title. If Race does not win, who will get the title shot? Speaking of the next card, the Iron Man format will continue with the Valiant Brothers, The Last of the Famous International Playboys, The Road Warriors and Nikita Breznikov’s Foreign Legion battling for the LWF Tag Team Titles.

Buddy Rogers stuns Frank Gotch with a jumping knee smash followed by a series of dropkicks for the three count. Bockwinkel rams Gotch’s face into the steel rails by the fans. Gotch is busted open! Nick Bockwinkel attempts to attack Gotch from behind but Gotch sees him coming and slams him onto Baba. Bockwinkel rolls to the floor and Gotch covers Baba for the pin. Bockwinkel is clearly upset at himself by not causing a disqualification finish which would have eliminated both Baba & Gotch from the tournament. Bockwinkel plants Rogers with a piledriver for a 2 count and then takes the fight to the floor starting a violent brawl. The referee comes out and warns both men to take the fight back into the ring but they don’t and both men are counted out of the ring. The fight continues until security arrives to break things up.
The second segment features action from the LWF Arena.
Dick Hutton, The Destroyer & The Sandman v. Kowalski rams Sandman’s face off the ringside table and ends the mach with a FACE CLAW at 6:32
The Insider is the third segment. We are introduced to the insider who each week will look at the goings on behind the scenes in the LWF. This week, the insider looks at the omission of Harley Race from the LWF Title Iron Man Tournament. Sources close to the Commissioner’s Office state Race was slated to be part of the tournament up until the week before the event when he has bumped in favour of Giant Baba as a direct result of pressure applied by the ownership of the LWF. An unnamed source told the insider Baba was offered Race’s spot in the tournament as a on olive branch in the ongoing negotiations between Baba and the LWF that would see an exchange of talent between Baba’s legend’s roster and the LWF roster. Commissioner Cox has denied this was the case but the insider has confirmed that Baba and the ownership of the LWF did ink the deal that would see Baba’s talent continue to tour the LWF after he has added to the tournament. Commissioner Cox made sure Race had the opportunity to earn a title shot before the LWF Tournament had even gotten underway. Perhaps Cox had a guilty conscience.
The last segment recaps Harley Race and his dealing with the Commissioner Cox at Card #1.
