LWF WORLD CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING & PRIME TIME WRESTLING NEW ORLEANS ARENA, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA MONDAY, JANUARY 5, 2009
*****RESULTS*****
(Card source key: low=Filsinger’s Legends Of Wrestling; low-b=Legends Of Wrestling Bootlegs; low-c=Legends Of Wrestling Creations; low-m=Legends Of Wrestling Memphis Bootlegs)
DARK MATCH PAUL “BUTCHER” VACHON (low) beat “OLD SCHOOL” STEVE CORINO (low) by disqualification when Corino used a weapon from ringside (Referee: James Beard)
LWF PRIME TIME WRESTLING on ABC Family (10 p.m. Eastern/9 p.m. Central Tuesdays, with commentary by Mike Tenay & Larry Matysik and ring announcing by Gary Michael Cappetta)
(Matches to be aired on Tuesday, 1/6/09, along with highlights from tonight‘s World Class Championship Wrestling)
S.D. “SPECIAL DELIVERY” JONES (low) beat “LIVING LEGEND” LARRY ZBYSZKO (low) by countout (Referee: Earl Hebner) --During the match, Bruno Sammartino came out to sit next to Tenay and Matysik and offer commentary on the bad blood between himself and Zbyszko. The self-proclaimed “Living Legend” took offense to this and left the ring to verbally confront Sammartino, and he lost track of the referee’s count. Zbsyzko jumped back into the ring a half-second too late, and he screamed at the referee while Sammartino calmly walked to the back, congratulating Jones.
In the back, Gene Okerlund was with Sabu, about to try to interview him when the lights went out. When they came back on, Sabu was on the floor, clutching his knee. Okerlund called for help, noting that Sabu had a match scheduled later against Buddy Rogers.
DOMENIC DeNUCCI (low-b) (w/ Trudi “Trinity“ DeNucci) (low) beat MAURICE “MAD DOG” VACHON (low) with the Airplane Spin finisher (Referee: David Manning)
LWF PRIME TIME WRESTLING MAIN EVENT “NATURE BOY” BUDDY ROGERS (low) (w/ LWF Women’s World Champion “Sensational” Sherri Martel) (low) beat “HOMICIDAL, SUICIDAL, GENOCIDAL” SABU (low) with the Figure Four Grapevine finisher (Referee: Dave Hebner) --Sabu could barely stand, and Rogers took full advantage of his injury with a quick application of his patented Grapevine for the victory.
ABC & The LWF Present WORLD CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING on ABC-TV (8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central Mondays, hosted by Gordon Solie & Jim Ross (hours 1 & 3), Mike Tenay & Larry Matysik (hour 2), Bill Apter, “Mean Gene” Okerlund & Gary Michael Cappetta)
LWF General Manager Bill Watts started the show in the ring and promised the fans that the LWF is about to blow things wide open in 2009, and he started by calling out LWF World Cruiserweight Champion Frank Gotch, who came to the ring wearing his title belt and carrying the Armed Forces Cup trophy he won in Iraq. Watts said that, from now on, the LWF will recognize only one weight class, and that is an open class, so the LWF World Heavyweight Championship, held by Lou Thesz, would now be called the LWF World Championship. Watts then asked Gotch to hand over his Cruiserweight belt because Gotch was being stripped of the title. Gotch began to complain and did so until Watts told him that, in recognition of his success as Cruiserweight Champion, the LWF Board of Directors have decided to name Gotch the first LWF World Television Champion. An assistant handed the new TV belt to Watts, who gave it to Gotch, whose attitude changed upon receiving the brand new, Reggie Parks-designed belt. Watts then told Gotch that this meant he could no longer utilize the clause in the Cruiserweight Title contract that said he could refuse matches against opponents more than 50 pounds heavier. Gotch had a look of apprehension before nodding his head in agreement. Watts said the TV Title would be defended every week on World Class Championship Wrestling, and the matches would have a 10-minute time limit. In the case of a draw, Watts said, the champion would retain the belt. And, the opponent would be selected by a blind draw in the back, so the champion would not know who he was wrestling until the challenger comes out. “And, with that,” said Watts, “your first title defense starts … NOW!”
LWF WORLD TELEVISION TITLE MATCH Champion FRANK GOTCH (low) beat RIKIDOZAN (low) with the Gotch Toehold finisher to retain the belt (Referee: Mark Curtis)
WEAPONS MATCH BRUNO SAMMARTINO (low-b) beat TULLY BLANCHARD (low-b) with a Small Package (Referee: Dick Woherle) --Before the match, Watts announced that Larry Zbyszko would be suspended if he came to ringside during this match. Blanchard had a stockpile of weapons stashed under the ring, but Sammartino didn’t need much more than a steel folding chair to clobber Blanchard and score the pin with a rare Small Package.
Bill Apter interviewed Bob Backlund and his manager, Lou Albano, about the Number One Contender match later in the night for the shot at Lou Thesz and the LWF World Championship at the Rumble Royale PPV. Backlund first addressed the Weapons Match we had just seen, saying it was a “travesty and a massive black eye on the honorable sport of professional wrestling.” Backlund then said that “Captain Louis” has him running like a well-oiled machine, and “I’m going to show Daniel Severn that, no matter how good an amateur you may have been, and I should know, because I was the best of my class, one cannot achieve the peak of professional wrestling without properly adapting to the genre.”
LWF NATIONAL TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH Champions EAST-WEST CONNECTION (Adrian Adonis & Jesse “The Body” Ventura) (low-b) (w/ Bobby “The Brain” Heenan) (low) beat “DOGAFCED GREMLIN” RICK & SCOTT STEINER (low-b) by disqualification to retain the belts (Referee: Scrappy McGowan) --Adonis and Ventura double-teamed Rick until Scott lost his temper and went wild on the defending champions, even to the point of grabbing a baseball bat left behind from the previous match and swinging for the fences at Adonis and Ventura. Referee McGowan called for the bell as Heenan called his men off and ran to the back.
Because of the disqualification in one fall of last week’s World Tag Team Title change from Goliath & Black Gordman to the Road Warriors, it was announced that, next week, either Animal or Hawk will take on either Goliath or Gordman in a singles match, and the winner would decide the special stipulations for the rematch in two weeks in Chicago. If a Road Warrior wins, they get a Chicago Street Fight. If Goliath or Gordman wins, they get a Ladder Match.
DEWEY ROBERTSON (low) beat “UNPREDICTABLE” JOHNNY RODZ (low) with the Figure 4 Leglock finisher (Referee: Johnny “Red Shoes“ Dugan) --This was Robertson’s debut on LWF Television, and Tenay and Matysik muttered something about Robertson looking familiar for some reason, but they let it go as Robertson dominated Rodz.
LWF WOMEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH Champion “SENSATIONAL” SHERRI MARTEL (low) (w/ “Nature Boy“ Buddy Rogers) (low) beat TRUDI “TRINITY” DeNUCCI (low) (w/ Domenic DeNucci) (low-b) with the Top Rope Splash finisher to retain the belt (Referee: Bronko Lubich)
Gene Okerlund interviewed Dan Severn, who is in the main event tonight against Bob Backlund with the winner getting a World Title shot. Okerlund first asked Severn about Severn’s former mentor, World Television Champion Frank Gotch. Severn said, “Don’t get me wrong, I learned a lot from him. But, he had problems with me becoming so successful in the LWF. So, he’s the first Television Champion. Good for him. Tonight, I’m the one with a chance to earn a match against Lou Thesz for his World Heavyweight Title. I’ve beaten Thesz before, and I can do it again. First, though, I have to get past Backlund. Make no mistake about it, it won’t be easy. But, as they say, nothing worth having comes easy. Backlund, be ready for the most intense wrestling match you’ve ever had!”
LOSER OF THE FALL LEAVES THE LWF “TOTAL PACKAGE” LEX LUGER (low-b) & “MODERN DAY WARRIOR” KERRY VON ERICH (low-b) beat “SENSATIONAL INTELLIGENT” DESTROYER (low) & SANDMAN (low) (w/ “Sir“ Oliver Humperdink) (low) when Von Erich beat Sandman with a Running Dropkick; Sandman must now leave the LWF (Referee: Tommy Young) --Humperdink threw a major tantrum after the match, having lost both Sandman and Bret Hart the last two weeks. Destroyer tried to calm him down as Luger and Von Erich shared the excitement of their victory with the fans.
NON-TITLE MATCH “HACKSAW” JIM DUGGAN (low) (w/ Nikita Breznikov) (low) beat LWF National Champion “GOLDEN GREEK” JIM LONDOS (low) by countout (Referee: Nick Patrick) --Duggan speared Londos, knocking him from the ring. As Duggan waited for Londos to climb back in, Breznikov, out of the sight of both Duggan and Referee Patrick, held onto Londos’ leg, keeping him from beating the count back into the ring. It should be noted that Duggan’s back was to the giant LegendsVision screen as it showed Breznikov holding onto Londos’ leg.
Before the main event, it was announced that Londos will defend the National Title against Duggan next week in Sioux City, Iowa
LWF WORLD CLASS MAIN EVENT--LWF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP NUMBER ONE CONTENDER TOURNAMENT FINALS BOB BACKLUND (low-b) (w/ “Captain“ Lou Albano) (low) beat DAN “The BEAST” SEVERN (low) with the Crossface Chicken Wing finisher to win the tournament and earn the shot at World Champion Lou Thesz at Rumble Royale (Referee: Gilberto Roman) --Thesz joined Ross and Solie on commentary during this match. Backlund put such pressure on Severn’s neck and shoulder that “The Beast” had no choice but to tap out. After the match, Thesz stepped into the ring and had a staredown with Backlund as Albano tried to get Backlund out, saying, “Save it for the Rumble Royale, Bobby.”
Highlights will air, along with matches taped earlier in the night, Tuesday night at 10 p.m. Eastern/9 p.m. Central on LWF Prime Time Wrestling on ABC Family.

Steiner, by Andre; 27) Gotch, by S.D. Jones; 28) S.D. Jones, by Duggan; 29) Duggan, by Andre.
WINNER: “SEVENTH WONDER OF THE WORLD” ANDRE THE GIANT (low-b)
NOTES: For the second consecutive Battle Royal (along with last Monday night on ABC’s World Class Championship Wrestling), National Champion Londos was eliminated first … DeNucci eliminated all three Freebirds by himself … When Zbyszko’s number came up, he took his time getting to the ring and then stalled, refusing to get in the ring as Sammartino called him in. When Andre came out, behind Zbyszko, the Giant grabbed the self-proclaimed “Living Legend” and tossed him into the ring at Sammartino’s feet. Minutes later, when Sammartino had Zbyszko against the ropes, Andre tossed him out. When Zbyszko tried to shake his hand, Andre threw Zbyszko out.

“OLD SCHOOL” STEVE CORINO (low) beat GEORGE SOUTH (low) with the Old School Expulsion finisher (Referee: Mark Curtis)
“MODERN DAY WARRIOR” KERRY VON ERICH (low-b) beat DEWEY ROBERTSON (low) with the Iron Claw finisher (Referee: Tommy Young)
LWF PRIME TIME WRESTLING MAIN EVENT “DOGFACED GREMLIN” RICK & SCOTT STEINER (low-b) beat PAUL “BUTCHER” & MAURICE “MAD DOG” VACHON (low) when Rick beat Mad Dog with the Steiner Dog finisher (Referee: David Manning)
ABC & The LWF Present WORLD CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING on ABC-TV (8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central Mondays, hosted by Gordon Solie & Jim Ross (hours 1 & 3), Mike Tenay & Larry Matysik (hour 2), Bill Apter, “Mean Gene” Okerlund & Gary Michael Cappetta)
LWF WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH--10-MINUTE TIME LIMIT “HACKSAW” JIM DUGGAN (low) (w/ Nikita Breznikov) (low) beat “PRETTY BOY” LARRY SHARPE (low) by countout to win the vacant belt (Referee: Dave Hebner) --The title was vacated at the beginning of the show because Sabu, the reigning champion, could not defend due to injuries suffered in the Texas Death Match last night against The Sheik. Two names were drawn at random, and they were the names of Duggan and Sharpe. Duggan hit a spear on Sharpe, which sent the “Pretty Boy” out to the floor. There was some confusion as to whether Duggan would be awarded the title, since, generally, championships aren’t decided by countout or disqualification. LWF GM Bill Watts made the ruling that, since the championship was vacant, it could be won by countout or DQ, so Duggan was declared the winner and new champion.
“TOTAL PACKAGE” LEX LUGER (low-b) went to a double-disqualification with “NATURE BOY” BUDDY ROGERS (low) (w/ LWF Women’s World Champion “Sensational” Sherri Martel) (low) when both men threw down the referee as he tried to break up their fight in the corner (Referee: Dick Woherle)
FABULOUS FREEBIRDS (Michael “P.S.” Hayes & Buddy “Jack” Roberts) (low-b) (w/ Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy) (low-b) beat DOMENIC DeNUCCI (low-b) (w/ Trudi “Trinity“ DeNucci) (low) & BRUNO SAMMARTINO (low-b) when Hayes beat DeNucci with the Bulldog finisher (Referee: Johnny “Red Shoes“ Dugan) --Just as the ‘Birds were finishing up on DeNucci, Larry Zbyszko ran out and attacked Sammartino, and the two fought their way to the back. After Hayes got the pin, Trudi ran into the ring to check on her uncle and then started slapping Hayes. The ‘Birds acted like they were going to attack Trudi, but they held back and exchanged words. Suddenly, a redheaded woman jumped in the ring and nailed Trudi from behind, and she proceeded to wipe the mat with the young woman. When she decided DeNucci had had enough, the woman and the Freebirds left the ring, laughing.
After the break, the Freebirds and the unidentified woman were still laughing alongside Gene Okerlund. Hayes explained that the woman’s name was April Hunter, but everyone on Badstreet called her “Big Red.” Hayes said, “We knew that spaghetti-eater DeNucci would have his anorexic little niece at ringside, and we just wanted to keep things even. So, we put in a call to Atlanta G.A. this morning and called up our lady ‘Big Red.’ Domenic DeNucci, you may have put the Freebirds out of the Rumble Royale, but you’re not going to be able to count on your niece to back you up. With April watching our backs, we’re going to work on getting you out of the LWF!”
LOU THESZ (low-b) beat FRANK GOTCH (low) with a German Suplex (Referee: Gilberto Roman) --Gotch started the match taunting Thesz with the Armed Forced Cup Gotch won at the Tribute to the Troops show in Iraq, during which Gotch beat Thesz in the tournament while Thesz was still World Champion. During the match, a camera backstage showed Sammartino and Zbyszko fighting as security and wrestlers worked to separate them, but not before Sammartino rammed Zbyszko’s back hard into a heavy trunk. Thesz coolly went about the business of outwrestling Gotch and gaining the win in his first match since losing the World Title to Bob Backlund last night.
DAN “The BEAST” SEVERN (low) beat LARRY ZBYSZKO (low) with a Bow and Arrow (Referee: Bronko Lubich) --Zbyszko favored his back throughout the match, and Severn took advantage of it to get the win.
Abdullah Farouk brought The Sheik out and started bragging about injuring Sabu last night and claiming that no one in the LWF wants to face Sheik. This brought out, of all people, Destroyer, who resisted Sir Oliver Humperdink’s efforts to restrain him. Destroyer challenged Sheik to a wrestling match on the spot, and Farouk accepted for his man.
“INTELLIGENT SENSATIONAL” DESTROYER (low) (w/ “Sir” Oliver Humperdink) (low) beat The SHEIK (low) (w/ “Grand Wizard” Abdullah Farouk) (low) with a Single Leg Boston Crab (Referees: Earl Hebner) --Destroyer put his hold on Sheik and locked it in tightly. When it became obvious that the Syrian couldn’t work free, Farouk grabbed a towel from ringside and threw it in.
LWF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP NUMBER ONE CONTENDER MATCH RIKIDOZAN (low) beat FREEBIRD TERRY “BAMM BAMM” GORDY (low-b) (w/ Michael “P.S.” Hayes, Buddy “Jack” Roberts [low-b] & “Big Red” April Hunter [low]) with a Boston Crab (Referee: Scrappy McGowan) --This match was set up because Rikidozan eliminated National Champion Jim Londos first in last Mondahy night’s Battle Royal, and Gordy eliminated Londos first in the Rumble Royale. When the Freebirds and Hunter attempted to intimidate Rikidozan by their numbers, the Referee ordered all of them to clear out of ringside. Left to a one-on-one matchup, the Japanese Legend forced a submission to earn a shot at Londos’ title.
LWF WORLD CLASS MAIN EVENT--LWF WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP NUMBER ONE CONTENDER MATCH “LEGION OF DOOM” ROAD WARRIORS (Animal & Hawk) (low) (w/ “Precious“ Paul Ellering) (low) beat EL GRAN GOLIATH & BLACK GORDMAN (low-b) beat when Animal beat Goliath with the Power Slam finisher to earn the shot at World Tag Team Champions the Rock ’N’ Roll Express (Referee: Nick Patrick)
Highlights will air, along with matches taped earlier in the night, Tuesday night at 10 p.m. Eastern/9 p.m. Central on LWF Prime Time Wrestling on ABC Family.
