AEW week 2
Some of my thoughts:
First off, I have to say that this episode was much better that last week.
Young Bucks vs Private Party
It would be too easy to say that if you've seen one Old Bucks match you've seen them all. While they are going to wrestle the same match they always do, who their opponents are decides how much I like it. To someone who has seen the Bucks routine a hundred times, in my opinion Private Party stole the show. Despite my criticism of the Bucks, I thought they should have won this match. The top tag team in the company losing to relative unknowns in the first round of a championship tournament just looks bad. Private Party got over, they didn't have to win. This feels like the Bucks trying to subvert the expectations of those who thought they would book themselves on top. Subverting expectations just for the sake of it is usually not a good thing.
The Inner Circle (blech)
Jericho and his entourage just seem contrived and regressive. Jericho himself feels out of place in AEWs scheme. Such a cheesy act.
"'We the People' sucks (so does Jake Hager) and is dead and buried (like my interest in Jake Hager)." This guy is SO boring. I know people like the big, monster guys. So do I. But there is nothing compelling about this guy. Polo shirt, slacks and a blank stare. They aren't even trying.
Darby Allin v Jimmy Havoc
Darby is cool but I don't care for Jimmy Havoc. He is just so unconvincing. This match didn't do much for me.
Women's match
I just did not care. Britt Baker is boss and I'm interested in seeing more of Bea Priestly. Riho is pretty lame.
To the commentary team: Every time you point out that Aubrey Edwards is a good referee you might as well be saying "For a woman." I am in no way the PC police but this struck me as tone deaf.
Mox vs Spears
This was just a good, simple brawl. Liked it and the PAC, Omega, Mox stuff afterward.
Dustin/Adam Page vs Jericho/Guevara
The announcers saying Page reminds them of Barry Windham. Oh please.
This was a good match. Jericho looked sharp and it was cool seeing Dustin doing well and getting the great fan reaction.
Bryce's horribly overdone blind ref act was embarrassing.
WHY was there a lights out spot when everyone knew Cody was going to show up? This was really dumb.
They just can't help themselves from doing the post match chaos melee can they? Just so overboard and cliche. I guess if you didn't watch WCW in the late 90's you might think this is neat-o. But it got old real quick even back then.
The MJF face(?) turn was... unexpected. This is how you subvert expectations.
