Interesting question. If I were to make a top 20 list of all time fav characters I bet most would be pre - New Beginnings and probably a lot of guys between 2087-2092. No doubt nostalgia plays a big role in that because when I go back and play the older cards the matches are sometimes agonizingly long and drag out with the lack of downs and Add 1’s. The modern era provides much more action, blood and crazier matches in general. So tough call. I’m not even sure I have an answer for it.

These days I only play Legends, but I have some great memories of the early days of the GWF... Those were the days.

I picked old school because I haven't really played much else.

The Megatournament era was my favorite time frame. I just play Indies & Legends now but still buy everything. I haven't really been into anything COTG since returning from Centra.

I think whenever you get into a hobby, music, comics, etc., you will consider that time frame "the greatest era". Therefore, Rick Martel as AWA World Champion will always be "my champion", DC Comics from 1979 until Crisis on Infinite Earths are "my comics", and mid to late 80s metal and Run-DMC & Beastie Boys is "my music".
So while I do enjoy all eras of COTG, my greatest connection is 2087 through 2095 especially, but even through The End 2111, when I was playing regularly. I find the newer stuff interesting, and it gives me an itch to play, but I really love the stuff from my youth.

Alright, I have discussed this with my youngest son and we have come to this conclusion...
I really like the current age but have nostalgia for the "golden years"... I do like how the matches move faster in the current age but really getting tired of talent being retreaded and reintroduced.
Marcus,on the other hand, likes the "golden years" better and is currently in 2099 at the moment. He states that the story was more in depth and it is easier to like/dislike talent ala Kayfabe! He also thinks that the current age moves faster (dont ever put Asylum vs. Cosmic Forces against one another btw...ooof!) but he feels like the storylines seem 'meh' and that talent leaves too early/waits too long to leave...
I love playing his fed and my memory of certain talent obviously has been blurred because some talent isnt as good as I thought they were...but I love playing 2132 (at the back half of that edition)!
That's my two cents!

It's funny Chad brings that point up as my grandpa brought up same point when I started playing Goldeneye and said Brosnan was my favorite Bond. The theory I dont think always works but ... late 80s, early 90s xmen will always be my comics, Brosnan is my 007, Jean Luc Picard may even be my enterprise captain.
But back to the question at hand, not sure I can answer this correctly since my first incarnation I didnt even know there were additional sets till I think 95 lol. Then I caught up. Second incarnation obviously playing from beginning and not getting caught up (i did the new BEGINNINGS thing though). Third incarnation and I'm at the dawn of chaos.
I'm a fan of the whole game but I'd say I have more favorites from early on cause I've played it more.

I think it would be interesting to hear from folks who started playing at the time of New Beginnings or when the color GWF set was available. Did most folks start from there, or did they go back to 2087 and start? I know Carter's art doesn't always get love, but I think it showed so much expression and character for the wrestlers. When the Duke of Destruction and Red Talon b&w cards came out, it took me back to being a kid. I love those cards! I remember discussing the cards with iowaoaks at the IPW show in Waterloo on HOF weekend. We were both wigging out.
