Show notes: the day started with the United State championship changing hands. Johnny Valentine lost a title match against the Destroyer a month ago at Summer Slam, but remained the top contender to the title. As expected it was a very hard-hitting contest. After a lot of back and forth fighting and near falls Valentine won a slugfest and grabbed a three-count on a stunned Destroyer to win the U.S. title for the second time in his career. The last time he held it was November of 2116 on a tour of Japan and he only had the belt for one day. The Destroyer had been champion for four months.
The Crockett Cup started the second round with the World tag team champions the Road Warriors against the Killer Bees. Tensions were high between the Bees as Brunzell was injured during the EPW Mid-heavyweight title tournament and Blair didn't like that his partner put their chances in the Crockett Cup at risk. The Bees did more than hold their own, twice getting two counts on Hawk. But the LOD beat on Brunzell outside the ring and a power slam by the Animal ended the match. Afterwards, B. Brian Blair screamed at Brunzell lying on his back in the middle of the ring, put the boots to him, and left.
Midway through the second round of the Crockett Cup, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper defended the World TV title against former champion Tully Blanchard of the Four Horsemen. Bob Orton Jr. and J.J. Dillon were each at ringside. Piper really dominated the bout but Blanchard is tough and Dillon did all he could to help. Piper wore Blanchard out though but still couldn't win with the Sleeper. He leveled Blanchard again with a foreign object and got the pin.
As the Crockett Cup moved on, ECW tag team champions Rob Van Dam & Sabu looked great against the Canadian tag team champions the Kangaroos. This was a good one, back and forth, but inteference by Wild Red Berry set the Roos up for the win.
The quarterfinals started with an all-time dream match that was totally awesome! Doc and Gordy dished it out to the Legion of Doom. The Road Warriors kept crushing them with the Doomsday Device only to see the pin broken up or a kick out. The LOD were on the defensive more than usual. It was toe to toe power moves back and forth and the Oklahoma Stampede ended the match.
No one was prepared for one of the greatest tag team matches in NWA history when the Mongols battled the Kangaroos. This match was amazing! All four men nearly killed each other as this match went on and on and on with both Sir Oliver Humperdink and Wild Red Berry getting involved. It seemed like it would never end but finally a submission let the Kangaroos survive.
The last quarterfinal match was 5 stars, maybe more! Even better than the Mongols and the Kangaroos. The Bulldogs and the Vachons showed incredible drive and desire to keep wrestling and win. Unbelievable action that could have gone either way a dozen times. The Dynamite Kid hit the diving headbutt to finally end the match.
The semifinals were two great matches. The bulls of the wrestling world went at it one bout with Brody & Hansen able to come away the victors over Doc & Gordy. The Kangaroos and the British Bulldogs put on a classic tag team battle with wild hits and misses all over the ring, but Red Berry's men got the fall.
The Macho Man exploded at the start of the match but Harley Race whethered the storm. The two fought a lot on the outside but Race took control. Savage was piledriven and Race connected off the top with a head butt. He went back to the piledriver to get the fall on Savage.
The Crockett Cup finals were not the spectacular match people wanted. The Kangaroos got the job done though. After isolating Hansen they went to work and a submission followed.
The Canadian tag team champions, the Kangaroos, are the Crockett Cup Tag Team Tournament winners.
