Card 08 – Maple Leaf Wresting – Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, ON
Ric Mccord stunned Mr. Hughes w/Jim Cornette. This was the classic big man v. little man and supposed to the be showcase match for the in ring debut of Mr. Hughes. Mccord had other ideas however and dominated this one with his speed and agility. He even managed to shock the fans and shake the ring with a side saddle suplex and later a pair of fireman’s carry slams for near falls. Cornette actually had to save Hughes after a FLYING BODY PRESS by causing a distraction. Things did not get any better for Hughes who could not avoid the dropkicks and forearms of Mccord. The finish came after a second FLYING CROSS BODY. ** ½
Brutus Beefcake overcame George Tragos. The mat skills of Tragos ruled the early action as Beefcake struggled to get a move in. Beefcake took a breather and Tragos came out to ringside after him but Beefcake managed to send Tragos shoulder first into the ring post and the match turned. Beefcake picked up a near fall from Morgan Dollar after a pair of clotheslines but soon a bear hug takedown turned the match back in favour of Tragos. Beefcake managed to make the ropes to escape an ARMLOCK & SCISSORS but a double wristlock did more damage. Beefcake was able to power his way to a running elbow to the corner and then later planted Tragos with a cobra clutch suplex. Beefcake then went to the top and hit a deathjump cross body block to complete the comeback. ***
“Iron” Mike DiBiase downed Redd Dogg in a bloody intense battle. This one went back and forth early on with no clear advantage until Dogg managed to gain possession of one of Dr. Mike Lano’s camera and smashed DiBiase in the face with the weapon. DiBiase quickly wore the crimson mask but managed to kick out off cross body deathjump moments later. DiBiase was able to come back despite the blood loss and bounced Dogg’s face off the ring bell on the ringside table busting him open. The exchange at the end went back and forth again before DiBiase came off the top with a cross body block for the win [snake eyes]. ** ½
Kip James over Angelo Poffo. James was able to get the advantage early on in this one and really controlled a majority of the action. Poffo proved crafty however and difficult to put away. Twice Poffo kicked out after a STANDING LEG DROP and he also managed to pick up a near fall of his own from Morgan Dollar after a deathjump cross body block. In the end, James was able to use his superior power and agility to counter Poffo’s offense before hitting his finisher STANDING LEG DROP for a third time for the three count. * ½
“Mr. Electric” Steve Regal dominated Marty Jannetty. The story in this one was Regal dominating the action and Jannetty finding a way to kick out of all the covers at the last second keeping the fans on the edge. Regal even managed to apply a FT. LAUDERDALE LEGLOCK but Jannetty made the ropes to keep the action going. In the end, Regal crushed Jannetty with a cobra clutch suplex and hooked the leg for the three count. ***
Nora Greenwalkd & Trish Stratus defeated Glamour Girls (Leilani Kai & Judy Martin). The action was back and forth early on until Martin avoided a charge into the corner sending Greenwald hard against the buckles for a near fall from Morgan Dollar. Lai and Martin worked over Greenwald including a RUNNING SPLASH from Kai but Greenwald kicked out and then made a key tag to Stratus who took the fight to both Martin & Kai. Greenwald landed a FLIPPING SEATED SENTON on Martin but did not get the three count. It was back and forth into the finish until Greenwald downed Martin with a somersault neckbreaker for the win. ** ½
Billy Red Lyons over Masked Superstar by disqualification. Superstar took immediate control with his weight advantage slowing the pace with a sleeper that drained Lyons and lead to a CORBA HOLD but Lyons managed to make the ropes to get the advantage. Lyons managed to pick up the pace but a second sleeper turned the match back in favour of the Superstar. Lyons escaped to the floor and Superstar showed his frustration and cracked Lyons with a chair across the back which left Lyons in a heap on the floor. The referee called for the bell and Superstar was disqualified. **
Original Midnight Express (Dennis Condrey & Randy Rose) w/Jim Cornette & Mr. Hughes bested Fantastics (Tommy Rogers & Bobby Fulton) by disqualification. Fulton looked impressive at the start against Rose who gave way to Condrey. The action went to the floor. Condrey grabbed Cornette’s tennis racket but Fulton scored with a low kick and smashed Condrey with the weapon. The referee calls for the bell. It is chaos after the bell with racket shots to Hughes and Rose giving the Fantastics the upper hand. Ric Mccord joins the battle as Hughes starts to impose his will and a flurry of dropkicks clears the ring. The Fantastics hit a ROCKET LAUNCHER on Condrey before Hughes can drag him to safety. *
Canadian Open Tag Team Title Tournament – Finals
Long Riders (“Wild” Bill Irwin & Scott “Hog” Irwin) stunned Bruiser Brody & Stan Hansen to win the Canadian Open Tag Team Titles. Morgan Dollar was in charge of the action and things went to the floor almost immediately. Dollar was content to let them go and the fans ate up the action as Hansen took control against Bill Irwin after running Irwin into the ring steps. Brody tags in and lands a JUMPING KNEE DROP and only the save of Scott Irwin keeps the action going. Irwin manages to reverse a body block from Brody into a roll up for a near fall and suddenly the Long Riders have control of this one. Hansen gets back into the match but the Long Riders maintain the upper hand including a FLOAT KICK from Bill Irwin to Brody and a big boot to the face from Scott Irwin to Hansen. Hansen is trapped in the ring Scott Irwin executes a ring shaking SUPERPLEX and gets the three count. ***
Canadian Heavyweight Champion Jimmy Snuka defeated Brad Armstrong to retain the title (V 1). No one really gave Armstrong any chance in this one and early on it was all Superfly with chops and backbreakers. A piledriver nearly killed Armstrong but he managed to kick out of the cover. Armstrong began to get the fans support who wanted to see a closer contest and Armstrong responded and pushed Snuka to the edge. A RUSSIAN LEG SWEEP planted the champion but Snuka was able to just get his shoulder up before Morgan Dollar finished the three count. Armstrong’s confidence grew from that point but things took a turn when Superfly backdropped Armstrong to the floor. Snuka was back in the match and he controlled the pace from that point until planting Snuka with a piledriver to retain the belt. ** ½
