Plus the Canadian Open Tag Team Tournament gets underway with two opening round bouts. And Al Snow finally gets into ring with Bruiser Costa after their previous encounter was thrown out before it even started!

Gordon Solie opens the show with a recap from the action from Maple Leaf Gardens with still photographs of Harley Race winning the Canadian Title.

Canadian Open Tag Team Title Tournament – Round One

Valiant Brothers (Jimmy & Johnny Valiant) w/Rock Riddle def. Chris Candido & “Mr. Electricity” Steve Regal when Johnny Valiant pinned Regal after a face slam to canvas. The Valiants were so hated that the fans gladly backed Candido and Regal who used their agility to cause the undefeated Valiant Brothers fits early on including a pair of Flapjacks. The finish had some controversy however when “Luscious” Johnny smashed a chair into the midsection of Regal and referee James Beard let it go. The match was over seconds later. **

The Sandman comes out to be interviewed by Gordon Solie and before he can even crack open his beer “Lightning” Rod Fenton storms in and shoves past Gorden to start a wild brawl with Sandman that spills all over the Civic Centre before officials can pull the two men apart.

Canadian Open Tag Team Title Tournament – Round One

Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) w/Paul Ellering def. Johnny Saint & Dave Taylor with a DOOMSDAY DEVICE on Saint. The Civic Centre explodes at the open beats of Iron Man and the Warriors hit the ring and blow through the countering science of their opponents and crush Saint with a DOOMSDAY DEVICE. Saint somehow gets a shoulder up so the Warriors crush him with their finisher a second time and Dick Woehrle makes the three-count.

Bill Apter breaks down the Canadian Open Tag Team Title Tournment backet so far and hypes next weeks first round showdown between Rock ‘n’ Roll Express and the team of Magnum T. A . & Barry Windham!

Al Snow w/Head def. Bruiser Costa with a seated spinebuster. This one was joined in progress with Morgan Dollar in charge of the action. Snow pressed the attack and Head became involved for a big near fall. Costa battled back but Snow was able to toss him off the top of the corner and took control of the balance of the action. **

Vampiro is interviewed by Gordon Solie and is not pleased with what transpired at Maple Leaf Garden but he is cut off when “Strangler” Ed Lewis shows up and starts a brawl with Vampiro and takes the action to the ring where Joey Marella comes out and calls for the bell.

Vampiro def. “Strangler” Ed Lewis by disqualification when Lewis used a chair during a brawl on the floor. This was a wild main event as both men pulled out all the stops in an effort to get the victory and earn a showdown with Canadian Champion Harley Race at the next Maple Leaf Gardens show. Vampiro used his kicks and agility to get the upper hand after the pre-match attack by Lewis but Lewis kicked out after a NAIL IN THE COFFIN. Lewis blooded Vamprio during a brawl on the floor and despite the blood-stained mat, Vampiro survived back to back to back STRANGLER’S HEADLOCKS rocking the fans. Both men battled their way to the floor and that is where it ended. The fans booed Lewis out of the ring but the inconclusive finish caused many to wonder who will be facing Race on July 11th? *****

Canadian Open Tag Team Title Tournament – Round One

2 Cold Scorpio & Marcus Alexander Bagwell def. While Bill White & Frank Dalton when Scorpio used THE DISS THAT DON’T MISS on Dalton. Dalton & White controlled the action against Bagwell after Dick Woerhle called for the bell but a key tag to Scorpio turned the momentum and the action from that point was dominated by the fan favourites and featured plenty of double teaming before Scorpio hit his finisher and Bagwell blocked the pin save. * ½

Gordon Solie interviews Commissioner Teddy Long who address the issue of the next contender for Canadian Heavyweight Champion Harley Race. Long makes it clear that last week’s match between “Strangler” Ed Lewis and Vampiro was a number one contenders match. Vampiro won that encounter and therefore he would face Race for the title on July 11th at Maple Leaf Gardens. Lewis comes out and complain about the decision and Long grows tired of the complaining and tells Lewis he can face Johnny Saint next week on Ringside.

Koko B. Ware def. Shawn Daivari by disqualification when Daivari shoved the referee to the floor. Daivari controls the early action but cannot put away the Birdman with his finisher WMD. Ware draws on the fans support and mounts a comeback. Both men spend some time brawling on the floor under the eye of referee James Beard but Daivari cross the line when he shoves the referee to the floor and attacks Ware with a chair. * ½
Gordon Solie interviews Shawn Daivari at ringside and the fans respond with epic heat.

The Spoiler def. Henry Irslinger with a BIONIC CLAW. This match was lengthy and for the most part was dominated by the masked competitors mix of power and agility which Irslinger struggled to counter. Twice The Spoiler came off the top with a rope-walk smash and in the end used his finisher for the victory under the watch of Morgan Dollar. *

Barry Windham & Magnum T.A. are interviewed by Gordon Solie before they make their way to the ring. They are focused on claiming the Canadian Open Tag Team Titles it does not matter if they face friends or foes on the way to the gold.

Canadian Open Tag Team Title Tournament – Round One

Barry Windham & Magnum T.A. def. Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) when Windham used a LARIAT on Morton. Bill Alfonso draws the assignment for the main event. Windham controls with his size and together with Allen keep Morton cut off from his corner from outset. Windham picks up a near fall after suplex and then crushes Morton with his finisher while Allen cuts off the pin save. The Express are eliminated from the tournament in the opening round! Dud

Card 06 – Maple Leaf Wrestling – Ringside – Guelph Memorial Gardens, Guelph, Ontario (2021.07.03)

Gordon Solie runs down tonight’s matches including the semi-final match in the Canadian Open Tag Team Tournament between Road Warriors & Valiant Brothers in the main event. Hawk, Animal & Paul Ellering come out for a fired-up promo promising broken bodies in the main event.

Mikey Whipwreck def. Rock Riddle by count-out. Morgan Dollar had strict instructions for both participants before the bell and Whipwreck used his agility to gain the immediately upper hand and the fans could not be happier. Riddle was able to slam Whipwreck off the top of the corner to gain an opening but Whipwreck returned the favour moments later to a great pop. Things ended up on the floor after a Frankenmikey and a dive to the floor sent both men crashing into the rails. Whipwreck regained the ring, Riddle did not. * ½

“Strangler” Ed Lewis def. Johnny Saint with a STRANGLER’S HEADLOCK.
Morgan Dollar is the referee for this one which featured closely contested exchanges and counters. Several times the pair tangled near the ropes and into the corner and it was during of those encounters that Lewis used a quick fireman’s carry to get the advantage. Lewis then moved to a neck yoke that forced a rope break before applying his finisher three consecutive times for the victory. ** ½

“Strangler” Ed Lewis speaks him mind about the situation with Vampiro and Canadian Heavyweight Champion Harley Race and tells the fans he will be the next Canadian Heavyweight Champion.

Canadian Heavyweight Champion Harley Race def. Val Venis with a PILEDRIVER in a non-title match.
This one is joined in progress with James Beard in charge of the action. Venis has the upper hand including an impressive Russian leg sweep and flying shoulder block but a power slam is blocked and Race works the lower body with an Deathlock and then crushes Venis with his finisher in the middle of the ring. *

Canadian Open Tag Team Title Tournament – Semi-Final

Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) w/Paul Ellering def. Valiant Brothers (“Handsome” Jimmy Valiant & “Luscious” Johnny Valiant) w/Captain Lou Albano with a DOOMSDAVY DEVICE to Johnny Valiant. It is a busy night for Morgan Dollar who decides it would be best if the main event took place with managers on the floor sending Albano & Ellering to the back. Neither team is happy about it but the fans eat it up. This was a wild battle that saw the Warriors toss around both of their opponents but the Valiant Brothers were crafty in their defensive tags just managing to keep themselves in the match. Hawk does some damage on the floor posting “Handsome” Jimmy busting him open and later ramming “Luscious” Johnny into the ring side table. This led to the finish as the Warriors followed up with their finisher and the pin save was blocked. **

Gordon Solie wraps up the broadcast and hypes next weeks show featuring the second semi-final match of the Canadian Open Tag Team Title Tournament between the teams of Magnum T.A. & Barry Windham and 2 Cold Scorpio & Marcus Alexander Bagwell in addition to a Falls Count Anywhere encounter between “Lightning” Rod Fenton & The Sandman.

Card 07 – Maple Leaf Wrestling – Ringside – Guelph Memorial Gardens, Guelph, Ontario (2021.07.10)

Gordon Solie welcomes us to the show and we get straight to the ring.

Al Snow def. Fritz Von Goering by disqualification for smashing Snow with a chair. Morgan Dollar is the referee but this one ends before the bell sounds when Von Goering storms the ring and smashes Snow with a chair! Dud

Rock ‘n’ Roll Express stop in with Gordon Solie and give a passionate interview telling the fans with their support they will turn things around.
Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) def. Chris Candido & “Mr. Electricity” Steve Regal with a CROSS BODY BLOCK to Regal. Bill Alfonso is the referee which pleases Candido & Regal. The action is fast paced with both sides making tags. Morton catches Regal with a CROSS BODY BLOCK but can only get a two count before Candido makes the save. Candido and Regal come back including a Flapjack to Gibson but Gibson is able to reverse whip to the corner leading to a double clothesline sending Regal and Gibson to the mat. Gibson recovers first and the Express take over the match from that point leading to a CROSS BODY BLOCK from Morton to Regal for the win. **

Canadian Heavyweight Champion Harley Race is interviewed at ringside by Gordon Solie and Race expresses confidence that the challenge of Vampiro at Maple Leaf Gardens will be unsuccessful and this brings out Vampiro. The battle of words leads to an exchange of fists as officials come out to break the two apart.

“Lightning” Rod Fenton def. Sandman in a Falls Count Anywhere Match with a SERIES OF DROPKICKS. Morgan Dollar is the referee for the match and he can only watch as Fenton attacks Sandman with a chair before the bell. Fenton uses a chair to choke out Sandman before Dollar manages to kick the weapon to the floor. Sandman draws on the fans support to battle back with a bulldog but Fenton uses his speed to get back in control and dominates. Sandman kicks out after a SERIES OF DROPKICKS but Fenton uses his finisher immediately again for the pin. The action never leaves the ring! ** ½

Barry Windham & Magnum T.A. are interviewed by Gordon Solie at ringside before the main event but Road Warriors & Paul Ellering storm the ring and attack them. Marcus Alexander Bagwell & 2 Cold Scorpio join the battle and the action spills all around the arena.

Congrats to Harley Race on his tournament win for the Canadian title and I'm also really liking the tension between Vampiro and "Strangler" Ed Lewis. I'm looking forward to Race vs. Vampiro on the 7/11 card.

It is also cool to see Rod Fenton having success, particularly with his Falls Count Anywhere win over The Sandman.
