www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/37679765/heat-erik-spoelstra-play-best-thing-nba-last-decadeI find this interesting because I am not a fan of the play-in and one of the reasons is Miami. In the pre-play-in days they would have been the 7th seed. But thanks to the play-in they lost the first game and had to play again to stay in the playoffs. Miami actually came within one period of being knocked out of the playoffs. They were down one point going into the fourth quarter. They came that close to not being in the playoffs and now they are in the Conference Finals and have a chance at the NBA Finals. Granted the pressure of the play-in might have got the team focused but them came really close to being in the same position as all of us. Watching the playoffs from home. The other factor is since Miami slipped from 7th to 8th seed that meant that the top seed Bucks had to face the 7th best team instead of the 8th. Miami beat them and they fired their coach. Now they might have lost in the first round regardless or they might have lost in the second round and their coach would still have been fired. It just seems that the play-in might have played a hand in it. Oh, and one other thing is now they will talk about Miami trying to be only the second 8th seed to make the Finals when really they are a 7th seed. I actually like the idea of the play-in, but I don't like how the NBA does it. I can see the theory where the play-in can decrease tanking (which I really think hurts the game) and I compare it to the Conference championship tournaments in college basketball where the winner makes it to the NCAA 64, but I would only do it for the final 8th seed and that is it.

If they did it just for the 8th seed, it would be better. I would prefer a best of 3 but doubt that will happen. If it happens that one day a 7th seed at the end of the season has a large lead over the 8th seed but loses both their play-in games and get bumped from the playoffs it would then probably lead to a change. Till then we are stuck with what we have.

It has already started. I heard someone on the news talking about how the Heat are trying to become the first "8th" seed to win the NBA title. If it happens they need an asterisk by any notes as they are really a 7th seed based on regular season records.

Six years. $78.5 million.
Largest coaching contract in NBA history. This is not Phil Jackson. This is Monty Williams. I sure hope he is worth it. I am not holding my breath. He IS a really good coach and I think Phoenix is going to regret letting him go. His firing feels like one of those impatient, "we need to win now" reactions. They lost to the team who very likely will be NBA champs. Hopefully he can get us into the playoffs and winning a round or two sooner rather than later. Just imagine if the Pistons had won the draft lottery. Williams would be the happiest man in the world with that contract and Victor coming to his team.

Most mocks have us taking Whitmore or Walker. I just want someone who can play great D and/or shoot the 3 really good. That is something that will help the team get better.

I watched the game last night. It did not take long for me to remember why I do not watch baseball much. Offensive player drives to the basket, defender's feet are moving as he gets in his path, and it is called a charge. Used to be called a block. Later the offensive player is trying to back down the defender and he pokes his elbow into the defender's chest with no call. The best was the shooter jumping up, kicks his foot out and hits the defender in the groin and the defender is called for the foul. How did they write that up in the play by play? "Defender foul, penis to foot"? It was cool to see Denver win their first NBA title. They talked about Miami being only the 2nd 8th seed to make it to the finals. But they are the first 8th seed to finish 7th in the regular season rankings to make it there.

so what's the thought on Ausar Thompson for Detroit? I don't really know. From what little I know about him he seems decent. He was regular season and finals MVP of the little league he was in last year and finals MVP the year before. He might be able to help spacing on offense and give some much needed help on D. It is just after not getting Victor anyone seems a let down. I mean not only would Victor have been great because of how good he could be but it feels like he would have been the perfect fit for what we already have on the team. He could help the bigs protect the basket and make it hard for teams to attack but he could drag bigger defenders out to the 3 point line which opens things up underneath for our guys to attack. As long as everyone stays healthy we will see a big improvement over last season. Not that that is saying much lol.

I sure hope Marcus Sasser is at least a big scorer off the bench who also brings some D to the team. I mean trading a player and two 2nd round picks to get him is a bit pricey. I think we will be trading Killian Hayes if we can find a trade partner. He has potential to be good but his shooting % has been really bad all three seasons. If he could get his FG% over .400 and his 3point% over .300 he could be valuable due to his passing.
