Booker Bills Filsinger Tag Team Cup

With Euro-Cup being front and center on The Sports Network this week I have felt inspired to start my own tournament. I wanted to switch things up from my annual legends tournament so I have decided to make it a tag team event. The Filsinger Tag Team Cup!

I have selected 32 teams to compete in the event. Each team was seeded one through 32 and then I completed a random draw to place the top eight teams in the respective groups (one in each group). I then repeated the process for teams nine through sixteen etc etc until I had eight groups with four teams in each one.

The tournament will proceed round robin style with points being awarded as follows: Win 4 points, count-out win 3 points, disqualification win 2 points and draw 1 point.

Referee assignment card will be in play as will Dr. Mike Lano’s card. A roll at the start of the match will determine which official will be in charge of the action (1-2 James Beard, 3-4 Joey Marella and 5-6 Dick Woehrle).

Top two teams from each group advance to the knock-out round of sixteen. In the event of a tie at the end of the round robin, the team with the fewest accumulated pin fatigues will advance. If that is tied, then it will the pin fatigue differential that will decide who gets through. If that is knotted up, then it is tie breaker showdown.

I will be playing the matches following a schedule based on the 2018 world cup so the matches will be broken down individual cards featuring 3 to 4 matches. The exception being the open match which will be a one off.

Any thoughts on which group is the “group of death”?

Side note - All of these teams are VERY, VERY lucky that the American Males are not part of the competition... OH, SNAP!

On the first Look Group G looks like a Walkthrough for the Bulldogs.

Night One St. Paul’s Civic Centre, St. Paul, Minnesota

Group A Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens w/Bobby “The Brain” Hennan v. Long Riders (“Wild” Bill Irwin & Scott “Hog” Irwin)\

Both of these teams are well known the fans in St. Paul and ringside is ready for the opening match of the Filsinger Tag Team Cup. Joey Marella is in charge of the action. Stevens and Scott Irwin trade moves with Irwin getting the advantage and coming off the top with a smash. “Wild” Bill is in with an elbow from the top to the skull and then goes after Stevens’ eyes while Heenan gives it to Marella from the floor. A pair of throat drops on the ropes and Irwin covers for one (R9/P2). Irwin gets another pin attempt after a slingshot suplex (R10/P3). “Hog” is back in but his head butt spills Stevens towards his own corner and Bockwinkel joins the action for the first time. Bockwinkel quickly traps Irwin in a Boston Crab and later drops him with back elbow. Bockwinkel slows it down with a lengthy abdominal stretch. He moves to a BOCKWINKEL SLEEPER but Bill Irwin breaks it up with a smash the back. Bockwinkel chokes Irwin on the ropes and then hooks the leg for one (R11/P4). Stevens is back in with a double undertook suplex and a knee lift that sprawls Irwin close enough to his brother for the tag. Stevens gets out of a chin lock and executes a giant swing. Irwin bails and Stevens is out after him while Dr. Mike Lano captures the action from ringside. Back in the ring, Irwin lands a flying elbow drop and a sidewalk slam. Scott Irwin tags in but misses his running lariat. Stevens comes back with a jumping knee smash. Bill Irwin is in but Stevens counters the body slam and then executes a second giant swing. Irwin lands in his corner and Scott Irwin quickly tags and downs Stevens with a palm strike. Jumping knee smash lands on target and Irwin hooks the leg for the three-count. (R4/P4)

It appears that Vegas and walkswithwolf know what they are talking about with the top seed in Group A stunned in the first match of the tournament!

How about Pariah stepping up with a tournament winner pick before the first bell of the event! Jack Brisco went the distance in my legends tournament this year. Will he be able to continue that success with his brother?

Don't be too hard on yourself, brotha... Pin saves aren't even on my radar until a wrestler's PIN reaches at least a 5.

That upset by the Longriders could ruin the chances of Bock & Stevens taking the bracket... WOW!
