I don’t think they’ll say they we were kidding - I think they’ll treat it like a huge free agent signing and he gets his AEW title shot. Like the guys on the podcast said, he has current obligations to TNT TV. But they are going to let Tony Khan let the guy walk? Just doesn’t add up. Unless of course Cody simply used AEW to reinvent himself and he wants to back home to WWE like Lashley and Drew. I suppose that’s possible. Yeah, they wouldn't come out and "say" it, but it's odd to try and get around a contract stipulation that Cody agreed to, then later thinking "that was a bad choice". Especially when AEW knows their audience is a bunch of smart marks and internet trolls who can see through the BS. It's weird they'd go through this process because of "free agency", but it is pro wrestling. They do weird stuff all the time for storyline and it gets people talking. That's what they want. Like Sam and Mike said, it’s getting AEW crazy attention. Just like all those AEW guys rushing to debunk rumors about them appearing in the Rumble got all those AEW guys attention. The new normal in wrestling is 24/7/365 hype and drama just like politics. It’s literally the same model. Will it translate to ratings? Time will tell. But Tony Khan is definitely the master of hype and drama. He even has me talking about AEW lol

What if Cody Rhodes shows back up in AEW as the Midnight Rider II?
Maybe I'm irritable today but I'm already sick of seeing the awards from the Melzer clan touting the Bucks, Lucha Bros and Kenny Omega as the best things going last year. Everyone's tastes vary but there's nothing any of those 5 wrestlers did in 2021 that came close to what MJF, Bryan Danielson and CM Punk did. WAY better promos and matches all around. Cody isn't on the same level as those 3 to me but he's heads and tails above the people winner Wrestler Observer awards.

Only way I can see them using this as a storyline that MIGHT work, if you pardon the pun, is if he came back under a mask ala the Midnight Rider.

I do that too much. Getting old sucks. But yea, that might work.

I doubt it’s a work. Wish it was, cuz I enjoy Cody. Some great matches & his last AEW gimmick w the teased heel turn was great. I think he’s gone tho. Probably a bunch of reasons, but if WWE is offering huge money & they have nobody “really” on top aside Brock or Roman, he has a better chance to be higher up the card than he does in AEW. His not being able to challenge for the world title might have backfired too. Wonder how much Brandy was supposed to make. She was worthless when she walked down the ramp w a mic. Her fake position may have made her contract not worth it. She was the most disposable person on the roster & every fed has a bunch.

I see AEW got another strong rating this week. Reading some of the reactions to the main event, i think they are doing a near perfect job of filling the void left behind by ROH and NXT 1.0. It’s too bad ROH never had it so good, because they definitely had the right product at the wrong time I guess.

I feel we keep seeing the same guys leading up to the big cards. Cool, flippy, indie shit isn't saving TK's booking. I eventually feel it's going to be too much. Maybe I'm odd, but I prefer whatever Cody's vision was. With that said, I enjoyed the main event.
