I listened to this podcast. Good to hear Mark Ashby again!
Regarding Tim's comment about using Algebra, it reminded me of recently covering an Algebra class at my high school. Right now we have alot of teachers out sick (about 20 in my school just last Friday) so it has been all hands on deck covering classes on our preps to help try to keep the schools open which works for me as I have been making some extra money covering these extra classes.
One of these classes I covered earlier this year was an Algebra class and I (who have not had Algebra since the early 1990s) was trying to do Algebraic equations on the board for the class I was covering. The students looked confused and one of them said I did not follow the Order of Operations. I was thinking they were correct but I told them "Very good, I was testing you to make sure you were paying attention." That worked and from now on when I cover Math I just pass out the assignment which is all we are really expected to do when we cover classes in subjects we are not proficient.
We had approximately 65 sub openings since we've been back (multiple days for many teachers), and we have had exactly 5 subs total. The rest, many six periods per day, were filled by teachers in the schools.
Yeah, I think I made enough extra money in just recent prep buys to pay for my Wrestlemania ticket (only going for Night 1 this year.)
Our district is the 5th biggest in the country and it just announced an upcoming 5-day pause of the school year because there are just too many teachers out sick to operate. Last Wednesday the district had 1,643 employees absent (that is 1,643 employees, the student absences were much higher as some of my classes have absentee rates of almost 50%) and then the following day the school district had 1,875 employees absent. I was hoping we would not close even temporarily but hopefully this 5-day pause will allow some of the many sick teachers and students to get healthy and return next week.
