AWA Press Release: Today marks a historic milestone for the AWA. We are proud to announce a tag team tournament to crown the first ever AWA World Tag Team Champions. This will be an 8 team single elimination tournament. All matches must have a winner... no DQ's. The final match will be a 2 out of 3 falls match to determine the AWA Tag Team Champs. Here are the opening round matchups, determined by rankings:

ROUND 1

The Vachons vs Buddy Rose & Doug Somers

The Crusher & von Raschke vs The Long Riders

Steve Regal & The Grappler vs Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens

Rock 'n Roll Express vs The Flying Redheads

The opening matches begin with the next episode of AWA All Star Wrestling. Don't mis a moment of the action.

AWA All Star Wrestling - Card 5


As the announcers were explaining the AWA Tag Team Tournament rules, Harley Race made his way to ringside and grabbed a mic. Looking in the camera, he said calmly... “Manny Fernandez... you got real lucky two weeks ago... boy! I'm calling you out for later tonight. We're gonna fight... unless you're ain't got the guts. See you in the ring...”



The Vachons defeated Buddy Rose & Doug Somers after a vicious PILEDRIVER delivered by Mad Dog Vachon to Buddy Rose. Despite Rose & Somers dominating the match, Mad Dod got the “hot tag” and caught Rose with his finisher. Solid match for both teams.

The Crusher & von Raschke defeated The Long Riders after The Crusher delivered an elbow drop and quick pin. von Raschke got isolated early, but The Crusher cleaned up when he finally was tagged in. The Long Riders left the ring dejected. I think they thought they had this one.

Bockwinkel & Stevens defeated Regal & The Grappler after Nick Bockwinkel choked Regal with the ropes. Bockwinkel then went for the pin... grabbed a handfull of tights and got the 1,2, 3. Regal protested, but the referee never saw it. Bockwinkel and Stevens just smiled and left the ring area.

The Flying Redheads defeated The Rock 'n Roll Express after Rickt Morton was put to sleep by Billy Red Lyons SLEEPERHOLD. Robert Gibson couldn't help his partner as Red Bastion cut him off from making the save. The Redheads advance!

In the Main Event, Harley Race defeated Manny Fernandez with and inside cradle and quick pin. Manny looked stunned as Race rolled outside the ring and mockingly celebrated with the fans... just as Fernandez had done two week earlier. Race then wiped the sweat from his brow, flicked it at Fernandez and walked to the back.

AWA All Star Wrestling - Card 6


The announcers come out and talk about the semi-finals of the AWA World Tag Team Championship Tournament. In tonight's semi-final matchups, it will be The Flying Redgeads vs The Vachons and in the Main Event The Crushed & von Raschke will take on Bockwinkel & Stevens!



Ricky Morton defeated Ivan Koloff after Morton surprised Koloff with a CROSS BODY BLOCK and pin. Morton used his speed and agility to control Koloff, and the match, from the opening bell.

Stan Hansen defeated Bill Irwin after Hansen caught Irwin with a vicious LARIAT. Hansen nearly decapitated Bill Irwin. Irwin laid in the ring a long time before being helped to the back.

The Vachons defeated The Flying Redheads after Butcher Vachon delivered a backbreaker to Red Bastien. Billy Red Lyons could not make the save and The Vachons advance! This was a even match up with both teams having their chances. Tough loss for the Redheads.

Bob Backlund defeated “Mr Electricity” Steve Regal with a Boston Crab. Backlund really gave a textbook clinic in scientific wrestling, which frustrated Regal. When Backlund applied the Boston Crab, he leaned back and got the easy win. Regal refused to shake hands after the match.

In the Main Event, Bockwinkel & Stevens defeated The Crusher & von Raschke after Bockwinkel delivered a knee smash to the back, which von Raschke never saw coming. Stevens cut off The Crippler from making the save and that was that. von Raschke got isolated and couldn't recover from the beating he took.



So, The Vachons will face Bockwinkel & Stevens for the AWA World Tag Team Championship in two weeks! No DQ... best 2 out of 3 falls. Dont you dare miss it!
