I was talking to Pariah about some fed stuff on his thread and decided to move it here. Anyone is welcome to chime in about why they do what they do. It might give people more ideas. Tracking time
I keep time by week so a fed year has 52 weekly shows. I mostly keep track of time so I can track how long someone is out when they lose a loser leaves town match and so I know when to do the big year end tournament. Keeping track by weeks also lets me figure how how long someone is champion if I want to do it by length of time instead of by number of defenses. However, I usually keep track of how long someone is champion by number of defenses. Saying someone had a sixth month title reign doesn't mean much considering Hulk Hogan went that long without defending the gold a couple times. On the other hand, I've got Bob Backlund defending the belt every two or three weeks so six months would translate to a lot of title defenses. Another reason I track time is that I like to shuffle the roster a bit at the end of a game year. I know some of you have much larger rosters than I do but I like to keep things smaller so I don't have that many headliners in the fed at a time. 4-6 is a good number of main eventers for me although I usually have more than that. I'm going to attempt to do two shows a week instead of one in the next game year in LWF Legacy of Gold but we'll see how that goes.

Great idea Gunslinger! Maybe we can get this stickied so it's easy to find. I love talking fed management. It always inspires me to try something new when I go through the threads and see what everyone else does. I count my fed year in weeks as well, however, I don't hold myself to the 52-weeks a year. I think with Legends that is probably a good way to go or make it easy and have 26 or 52 match cards per year, an every week or every other week deal. For my Chikara and ROH I would run fewer shows per year and maybe even do "seasons" like Chikara did. COTG is hard for me b/c I feel like I just can't get enough in during a "game year" and it feels like I need to overload each card to get through all the potential storylines and have them play out fully, so I struggle with COTG the most. Also when it comes to tracking time for match length, I start the stopwatch on my iPhone and let it run. Once the match is finished, I double the time on the stopwatch and make that the "match length". Anything that hits 10-minutes (real time) in a singles is a draw (20 minute time limit game time). Tag-Team matches get 15-minutes (real time) before a draw (30 minutes game time). Championship matches have a 30-minute, real time, time limit to simulate a 60-minute, game time, match.

Very cool thread. I don't worry about time except when it comes to injuries. I just run shows for myself.
I like to see what other promoters do because it shows how versatile the game can be.

Ohhh I love threads like this...
I decided not to track actual dates because I didnt want to be held to a specific time period, but I do sorta keep track of time. I like to run a roughly 4 house show then a big PPV, rinse and repeat. If theres an injury, I do it by "cards" vs days/weeks, though I guess the concept is the same. Since I run a territory system I like to shuffle guys occasionally on an adhoc basis, with bigger "signings" whenever I have an idea for something.

This is how I used to do it but I quit trying to build everything towards PPV because it feels more organic to let the angles develop from episode to episode and do the blowoff whenever.

I've never been able to keep an indie fed going and I haven't hit on why I lose interest. Too many wrestlers, maybe? I don't do actual match time but if a match runs long and is extremely boring, I go into sudden death and whomever has to roll their PIN next loses.

Thats not a bad approach. I tend to book backwards, planning out roughly what I want my big show to be and then booking the house shows to lead up. Then I leave space for the "organic" angles to fill out the card, or main event a house show if it makes more sense to not wait for the "big" show.

Now I just have matches I'd like to do and move toward them if I can. I do more on the fly booking now.

For me its actually easier to have a hint of a direction, and then book towards that then just a random card with good matchups. Now, if the dice take me to another place then who am I to argue, but otherwise it just gives me a starting place to go.

I like booking ahead but I'm more motivated to actually play when I don't know where things are headed as much if that makes sense.
