My guess is he signed because it is hard to pass up almost a billion dollars . It is amazing how much a difference a missed period can be. Just ask any woman, or the man/men she recently had sex with, about that lol. Still, over $11 million a year is a lot. Congrats on getting him signed to the extension.

I suspect the reason he signed now was because the cat was out of the bag in terms of the contract that was being offered. Since it was right in the neighborhood of what he was looking for I don’t think he had much leverage by waiting until the season was over to sign; I think a lot of that might have been his agent getting in his ear. I doubt those trade talks with the Hurricanes really amounted to much. Considering the Canucks are in a win-now mode they probably would have been looking for one of Carolina’s star players in return. The only way that sort of deal really makes sense is if both players are unhappy in their current location; kind of like the trade the Jets & Blue Jackets made a few years ago with Patrick Laine and Pierre-Luc Dubois. Draft picks, even first-rounders, likely wouldn’t have interested Vancouver since they would be low first-rounders based on Carolina’s performance this year. I think the trade discussion was Canucks management way of telling Pettersson: “We have a winning team and we’re offering you the money you want. Either sign the deal or don’t but don’t jerk us around.” Regardless of the circumstances I’m glad the deal is signed. However, with higher pay comes higher expectations so I hope Pettersson is able to live up to them.

After their 3-1 victory over the Golden Knights on Thursday that's 3 wins in a row for the Canucks. Hopefully things are back on track now after that rough patch they hit. Tonight they kick off a nine game homestand (I'm going to the March 19th game against Buffalo) so there's a chance for them to get some home-cooking going as travel and jet lag won't be factors.
A bit disappointed my team wasn't more active at the trade deadline. Apparently they were in discussion with the Penguins for Jake Guentzel before he was dealt to the Hurricanes. Reportedly Pittsburgh wanted Nils Hoglander(one of our best young roster players) and Jonathan Lekkerimaki (one of our top two prospects) in return so I can understand why the Canucks passed on that one. That's a pretty steep price to pay for a rental player unless it's a genuine superstar.
The guy I was really hoping they'd trade for is Tyler Toffoli but the Jets got him instead. Toffoli was a late season acquisition for the team back during the 2019-2020 season and showed some real chemistry with J.T. Miller & Elias Pettersson. After the season was over the Canucks didn't re-sign him which disappointed both the fans and Toffoli as he really enjoyed playing here. It would have been great to reunite him on that Miller/Pettersson line yesterday. Considering that Winnipeg only had to give up second and third round draft picks to get him the Canucks probably could swung that deal without giving up a current player or prospect.

It was just announced today that goalie Thatcher Demko will be out 2-4 weeks with a knee injury that he suffered in Saturday night's win over Winnipeg. Definitely not good news for the Canucks as he's having a Vezina Trophy caliber season (although I think Connor Hellebyuck will deservedly win it in the end.)
Casey DeSmith has been adequate as the backup this year and after Wednesday's game against the Avalanche 5 out of the next 7 games are against teams not currently in a playoff position so I think they'll be OK.
Still, the sooner Demko gets back the better.

I breathed a huge sigh of relief last night after the Canucks 4-3 win over Vegas. They've had some real struggles against the other playoff-bound teams recently so they really needed that one in order to try to get into playoff mode.
Plus, the Oilers were catching up to them for first place in the Pacific Division; they're currently five points behind Vancouver with two games in hand so I wouldn't mind seeing a few more Edmonton losses the rest of the way. The two teams play each other on April 13th so that will be a very important game for both squads.
Not sure if I see a Stanley Cup Champion here just yet. There still appears to be something missing although I can't quite put my finger on it. On the plus side Thatcher Demko should be back in net next week so if he gets on a hot streak he can definitely be a difference-maker as many times the Cup is won by the team with the best goaltending. As it stands right now though I'm predicting Florida & Dallas in the Finals.
Regardless of what happens my team is back in the playoffs and has some solid groundwork laid for the future so in a lot of ways this season has already been a massive success. I'll be at their final two home games, (tomorrow night & next Tuesday) to cheer them on to victory.

Just leaving Rogers Arena after the Canucks 4-1 win over Calgary. With the victory tonight the Canucks clinched the Pacific Division title.🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Thatcher Demko was back in net after missing a month with an injury and he looked as sharp as ever. What I really liked about tonight's game is that the Canucks kept playing hard up until the very end; they got a late Power Play and were working their asses off to try to get a fifth goal.
One last game in Winnipeg on Thursday and then it's on to the playoffs.
GO CANUCKS, GO!!!!!!!!

I hope you guys can bring home the Cup. Good luck in the playoffs. Thanks. We'll see what happens. It would be nice to bring the Cup home to Canada for the first time in 31 years. In a way I'd also be cool if the Oilers or Jets accomplished that too. Not the Maple Leafs though. They're Canada's equivalent of the Dallas Cowboys: A team that gets a ridiculous amount of media coverage considering it's been ages since they've won anything!

Nice start for the Canucks. Keep it going boys. Thanks. I just found out a few minutes ago that Thatcher Demko is injured for tonight's Game Two and is questionable for the rest of the series.😢 Not good when you lose your starting goalie in the playoffs. Hopefully backup Casey DeSmith can regain his form from earlier in the season; he had some real rough outings the last month. Game Two starts in about half an hour and I'll definitely be watching live as it's the only game of the series that falls on my days off. GO, CANUCKS, GO!
