VS. [MADISON SQUARE GARDEN] The smoke-filled, sold-out arena was pumped up for this main event and ready to crown a new champion. The WWWF champion for the last year, Graham was the first in the ring and he posed to a chorus of boos, as the Grand Wizard waved his hands for the fans to quiet down - which only made them boo louder. Suddenly the arena erupted as the challenger, the All-American boy Bob Backlund, made his way to ring. Backlund wore his traditional red jacket, with a white towel wrapped around his neck and was accompanied by his manager Arnold Skaaland. The fired up Backlund climbed onto the apron, unzipped his jacket and threw his towel into the crowd before climbing through the ropes. The ref went over the rules and checked both men for any foreign objects in their waistbands and boots, both men returned to their corners and the ref signed for the bell to ring! The challenger immediately put Graham in a pumping side headlock, which hurt the champion. Backlund followed up with two wind-up forearms that staggered Superstar and had him completely off balance. Bob then went for a hammerlock but the champion was too strong and tossed the challenger across the ring and then flexed for the fans. Graham went for a running shoulder tackle, but Bob stepped aside it and sent the Superstar into the turnbuckle. Backlund charged the champion, but Billy bounced out of the corner and put the challenger down with a skull splitting clothesline. The champion then applied his SUPERSTAR BEARHUG, but Backlund was able to force Graham back into the turnbuckle - forcing a break. The champion wasted no time in locking his SUPERSTAR BEARHUG AGAIN! Backlund was again able to force a rope break, and Graham was clearly beginning to question what it would take to put his challenger away. Graham uncharacteristically went to the top rope, but it paid off as he leveled Bob with a flying shoulder tackle. The force of the blow sent Backlund through the ropes and to the floor, as Graham again posed for the jeering fans. The All-American boy pulled Graham out of the ring by his leg and proceeded to ram Billy's head into the ring post, busting him wide open! Once back in the ring, Backlund had the champ reeling with a barrage of hard-hitting moves. An underhook suplex set the champion up for a ATOMIC DROP - 1.2.. NO!!! GRAHAM KICKED OUT! A bloody Graham fought back, and the match seesawed back and forth until Bob locked in a BOSTON CRAB that had the champion in agony. Superstar was able to crawl to the ropes and force a break, but his back was clearly hurting from that point on. The referee pushed Backlund back as he checked the blood pumping gash on the champions forehead. Backlund immediately picked the champion up for another ATOMIC DROP, 1.2.. NO! The Grand Wizard put Graham's foot on the bottom rope and got the ref to notice it! Arnold Skaaland dropped the Wizard with a wind-up forearm, as Bob picked the champion up for a PILEDRIVER 1.2..NO!!! GRAHAM GOT HIS OWN FOOT ON THE BOTTOM ROPE THIS TIME! Billy was able to roll out of the ring and to the floor but Backlund followed and rammed Graham's head into the ring post AGAIN!!! WHO'S THE HEEL HERE?!?!? Once back in the ring Backlund dropped the champion with another ATOMIC DROP - 1.2..3!!! Superstar Graham once again got his foot on the bottom rope, but the referee didn't see it or ignored it!!! The arena erupted as the ref handed the WWWF title belt to a jumping up and down Backlund, as a VERY bloody Graham was lying on the mat pointing at his foot still on the bottom rope. WWWF CHAMPION(1-0)

VS. RUSSIAN CHAIN MATCH
'THE ALL-AMERICAN BOY' BOB BACKLUND (C) vs. 'THE RUSSIAN BEAR' IVAN KOLOFF Backlund, never one to back down from a challenge accepted Koloff's challenge for a Russian chain match - going against Arnold Skaaland's advice. The champ looked focused and intense as the referee attached the chain to his wrist, as Koloff and manager Lou Albano looked on very confidently. The bell rang and the match started as a tug of war, both men using the chain to try and pull the other to the center of the ring. Backlund was the first to use the chain, as he wrapped it around his fist and punched the Russian bear in the forehead several times - busting him open. Bob quickly went to his finisher, the ATOMIC DROP but Ivan was able to get a foot on the bottom rope - breaking the count. The action went back and forth and even spilled to the floor several times, as both men used the chain to batter the other bloody! Koloff scored a near fall after a vicious RUSSAN SICKLE, but Bob was able to get a shoulder up at the very last second. With the champ down, Koloff went to the tope rope, looking for the same move that ended Pedro Morales' title reign, but Bob pulled him off the top by jerking the chain. Ivan crashed hard in the ring and the champ planted him with a Piledriver for the 1.2..3!!! WWWF CHAMPION(2-0)

STEEL CAGE MATCH .... ... VS. ... .. BOB BACKLUND (C) vs. 'SUPERFLY' SNUKA The wild man from Fiji was led to the ring by his manager Captain Lou Albano and once in the ring Snuka went from wall to wall grabbing and shaking the fence. Snuka paced back and forth like a caged animal, as the champion made his way to the ring with his manager Arnold Skaaland. Backlund removed his jacket and towel as he climbed the steps into the ring and once in the ring, he went right at the Superfly. Fist, chops, forearms and kicks were flying, as neither man would take a backward step. Eventually it was the challenger who gained the upper hand, after ramming the champ's face into the cage several times and severely busting him open! It's important to announce that President Jack Tunney made a stipulation, the match had to be won by pinfall or submission - NOT escaping the cage. Snuka put Backlund down with a backbreaker and then climbed to the top of the cage! Albano was waving his arms, trying to make his man understand that he could not win by escaping the cage. It took several minutes, but Snuka finally understood and turned around on the top of the cage and stared down at the prone champion. He took too long and gave Bob a chance to regain his faculties, and when he did SUPERFLY LEAP - Backlund moved, and Jimmy crashed hard into the mat. Bob was a man possessed from there on out, as he brutalized the challenger - ramming him into all four cage walls. Blood and sweat flew from the challenger with every STIFF wind-up forearm! Backlund landed his ATOMIC DROP, but Snuka kicked out at the last millisecond, infuriating the champion. The All-American Boy snapped right in front of the sold-out MSG fans and viciously locked in his CROSSFACE CHICKEN WING, screaming psychotically as he continued to apply more and more pressure to the hold! Snuka, to his credit, never gave up but did lose consciousness and the ref called for the bell. It took several seconds after the bell for Backlund to release the hold, but once he did and was handed his title belt, he was back to Bob again - jumping up and down with his hands raised. WWWF CHAMPION(3-0)

VS. BOB BACKLUND 4 (C) vs. ANTONIO INOKI 1 INOKI immediately took Backlund to the mat with an armbreaker and followed it up with an ENZUIGIRI for a quick near fall. Bob pulled himself to his feet with help from the ropes and immediately took another ENZUIGIRI, but luckily got his foot on the bottom rope before the referee's hand could slap the mat a third time. Inoki then locked in a sleeper and turned it into a Cobra Twist for yet another NEAR fall! Inoki was sure it was a three count and had words with Red Shoes, as Backlund rolled out of the ring for a breather and to try and clear the cobwebs from his head. Antonio followed him out, but Backlund used a gut wrench suplex to put Inoki through the announce table!! The action went back and forth until Bob went for a sunset flip off the ropes, but Inoki grabbed his legs and rolled him into another pinning combination. 1.2.. NO!!! Bob kicked out yet again! Backlund in desperation took the fight to the floor again and ALMOST got disqualified for ramming Antonio into the ring post - busting him open. Once back in the ring, Backlund put Inoki down with a underhook suplex. Inoki got back to his feet, but the champ was waiting and locked in his CROSSFACE CHICKENWING for the shocking comeback win!!! (snake eyes) Inoki never submitted, but did lose consciousness and Red Shoes called for the bell. WWWF CHAMPION(4-0)

VS. BOB BACKLUND 3 (C) vs. GREG 'THE HAMMER' VALENTINE 2 The champion started fast, hammering Valentine with repeated wind-up forearms before planting him with a delayed vertical suplex. The challenger left the ring several times, trying to break Backlund's relentless assault. This frustrated the champion and Backlund finally followed Valentine to the outside and this is where the match turned. The Hammer rammed Backlund into the ring post, busting Bob wide open, before throwing him back in the ring. A shoulder breaker set up a falling elbow hammer for a cover 1.2.. NO! Backlund kicked out as the ref's hand was coming down for three. An atomic drop put the champ down for another two count, as Albano was screaming at the ref "That was three ya bum!" Backlund fought back, hitting an ATOMIC DROP of his own for a cover - 1.2.. NO! Valentine got his foot on the bottom rope breaking the count. Backlund, thinking he had won, jumped up and started celebrating. As the ref was explaining to Bob that Grag had got his on the rope, Albano slipped a foreign object to The Hammer!!! An irate Backlund lunged at Valentine, but The Hammer picked him up and throat dropped him on the ropes. The challenger then slipped the object into his elbow pad before dropping a falling elbow hammer 1.2.. NO! Backlund got his foot on the bottom rope this time. Valentine grabbed Backlund by his foot and drug him to the center of the ring and applied his FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK. Bob struggled and scooted until he was able to grab the bottom rope and force the break, but Valentine drug him back to the center of the ring and applied it again. The champion hung on as long as he could, and his shoulders were counted down as he tried to fight through the pain. Madison Square Garden was eerily quiet as Howard Finkle made the announcement, "The winner and NEW WWF CHAMPION... GREG 'THE HAMMER' VALENTINE."WWWF CHAMPION(4-1)

MSG card #6 TEXAS DEATH MATCH VS. BOB BACKLUND vs. GREG 'THE HAMMER' VALENTINE (1)WWF title held up Backlund decked 'Captain' Lou Albano before the bell, knocking the rotund manager through the ropes and to the floor. A fired up Howdy Doody also attacked The Hammer before the bell, relentlessly punching and kicking him as the ref called for the bell to ring and start the match. A crazed Backlund pummeled Valentine unmercifully as a sold-out MSG went crazy! Bob sent Valentine to the mat with a vicious wind-up forearm and scored at two count, as a stunned Valentine barely rolled a shoulder up. Backlund was up quick, bouncing from foot-to-foot waiting on The Hammer to get to his feet. A disoriented Valentine got to his feet as Backlund positioned himself behind him and locked in the CROSSFACE CHICKENWING! The Hammer submitted almost immediately (snake eyes), but Backlund refused to release the hold. Arnold Skaaland, nor the ref could get Bob to release the hold as Albano motioned to the back. The INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION Don Muraco hit the ring and dropped Howdy Doody with a HAWAIIAN HAMMER, as Valentine slumped to the mat.
