Card 01 “The Rising” Brantford Civic Centre, Brantford, Ontario – 01/22/09
Match 1: Playboy Buddy Rose v. The Sandman
Great heat for Rose who demands that Gary Michael Cappetta announce him at 217 pounds rather than 271. Sandman has the crowd on their feet during his entrance. So much for the no smoking by-law. It is all Rose from the opening bell. The action spills to the floor and Rose maintains control thanks to a chair shot that busts Sandman open. Sandman continues to struggle managing only the occasional forearm or elbow. Sandman is able to block a hip toss and lands a forearm pummel that sets up a Heinekenrana for the surprise three count (R3/P3).
Match 2: Ted DiBiase w/Virgil v. Red Bastien
DiBiase cuts a solid heel promo before the match running down Brantford. DiBiase then pays a fan to polish his boots telling everyone that this will be the fan’s only opportunity to make money all year. DiBiase takes the early control but Bastien avoids a spinning neckbreaker (ch) and takes over. A pair of flying head scissors brings the fans to their feet and puts DiBiase’s shoulders to the mat (R7/P2) for a 1 count. Bastien connects with an ATOMIC DROP for another near fall (R6/P4) before tossing DiBiase to the floor. Bastien climbs the corner and falls onto both DiBiase & Virgil at ringside. The crowd is roaring! DiBiase crawls back into the ring and is trouble. A deathjump clothesline sends DiBiase to the mat and Bastien connects with flying dropkicks that topples DiBiase over the ropes to the floor. DiBiase drags Bastien to the floor and whips him into the steel ring post. Bastien is busted open. DiBiase nearly ends the match with a deathjump cross body block (R5/P2) and Bastien needs to grab the ropes to escape a MILLION DOLLAR SLEEPER (R4/P3). It is all DiBiase now but Bastien manages to counter a clothesline with one of his own and both men crash to the mat. Bastien is up first but cannot capitalize before DiBiase takes over again. Backward elbow off the ropes gives DiBiase a near fall (R8/P4) before a deathjump smash ties Bastien up in the ropes. DiBiase hammers away on his helpless opponent and the referee gets shoved to the mat. The bell sounds and DiBiase has been disqualified. More PWO officials arrive to break up the attack and a bloody and battered Bastien is left lying in the ring.
Match 3: Greg & Johnny Valentine v. Jimmy & Johnny Valiant
Both teams draw heat from ringside during the introduction. The Valiant Brothers keep Johnny busy with defensive tags. Greg tags in and takes the fight to Jimmy Valiant. Valentine chops drop Jimmy for a 2 ½ count (R4/P3). FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK but Johnny makes the save. Johnny Valentine tags back into the action and takes the fight to the floor tearing up ringside with Jimmy Valiant. ATOMIC SKULLCRUSHER for a 2 count (R7/P5). Valentine connects with a forearm hammer and pins Valiant (R6/P6) while Greg stops Jimmy from making the save.
Match 4: Bobo Brazil v. Nick Bockwinkel
The reaction for Brazil is off the charts. The action starts slow but heats up when Brazil whips Bockwinkel into the steel ring post shoulder first. Brazil enjoys the advantage until Bockwinkel avoids a full nelson suplex and traps Brazil in an abdominal stretch but Brazil breaks free (R8/P1). Bockwinkel Irish whips Brazil into the rails at ringside. Brazil and Bockwinkel brawl around the ring and the fans eat it up. Brazil escapes a FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK (R8/P3) and the action returns to the floor. Bockwinkel eats the ringside table and Brazil takes over the match. Bockwinkel reverses a whip into the corner but Brazil avoids Bockwinkel’s charge and Bockwinkel crashes hard into the buckles setting up a near fall (R8/P3). Brazil slows the match down with bear bug that nearly makes Bockwinkel give up (R7/P4). COCO BUTT for a 2 count (R8/P5) but a second COCO BUTT ends the match (R4/P6). Huge win for Brazil and the crowd loves it.
Match 5: Gorgeous George w/Cherie Dupré v. The Destroyer
Long intro for George who takes several minutes “preparing” at ringside before he will step into the ring. George starts strong and downs Destroyer for a 1 count with an airplane spin (R7/P2). Destroyer turns things around ramming George into the rails at ringside. A single leg Boston Crab sets up a FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK but George survives (R6/P5) by grabbing the ropes. Destroyer drags George to the middle of the ring and applied the hold a second time but Dupré is able to distract Destroyer and the action continues. It goes back and forth until the match spills to the floor and George clocks Destroyer with a chair shot across the back and is disqualified. Destroyer recovers but George is long gone.
Match 6: King Kong Bundy v. Giant Baba
Media from Japan fill ringside to cover Baba’s PWO debut. The two giants trade power moves and it Bundy who scores first with a running power slam that shakes the ring and gives him a 2 count (R4/P2). AVALANCHE for the five count (R 6/3 P7).
Match 7: Jimmy Snuka v. Buddy Rogers
Rogers works the crowd for heat before the match and the fans are all over him. The crowd is into this one from the opening bell and cheer Snuka’s every move. Snuka avoids Rogers’ charge in the corner and rolls him up for a 1 count (R6/P1). SUPERFLY LEAP (2) for a 1 count (R9/P4). Rogers tries to take a breather at ringside but Snuka leaps over the ropes onto Rogers at ringside. The crowd explodes. Rogers is reeling and Snuka does not let up. Rogers tries to escape to ringside again but Snuka scales the corner and leaps onto Rogers at ringside! A backbreaker sends Rogers to the floor once again but this time Snuka misses his offense off the buckles and crashes hard into the ringside rails. Rogers takes over the action but Snuka is able to come off the ropes with a cross body block. The fans are counting with the referee but Rogers gets his shoulder up at the last possible second. (R5/P4). SUPERFLY LEAP (4) and Rogers kicks out at 2 (R10/P8). Snuka cannot believe it but climbs the corner again for another SUPERFLY LEAP (4). There is no kick out this time and the arena erupts (R8/P9).
Match 8: Road Warriors v. Foreign Legion w/Nikita Breznikov
Incredible heat for Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff with their pre-match mic work. Both teams uses tags on defense to keep the action going back and forth. The Warriors crush Volkoff with a spike piledriver. Sheik tries to make Animal submit to a Boston Crab but Animal powers out (R8/P3) but Sheik keeps up the attack with a vertical suplex and a pair of sidewinder suplexes for a near fall (R7/P4). Animal is finally able to hot tag in Hawk and the momentum changes. Volkoff relieves Sheik sending Hawk into the ropes but the Road Warrior gets the best of the shoulder block and executes a perfect vertical suplex on Volkoff for the three count (R5/P5) with no pin save effort from Sheik or Breznikov.
Match 9: Frank Gotch v. Harley Race
The crowd is psyched for this one. Both men are focused during the introductions. Race tries to counter wrestle with Gotch and quickly finds himself on the mat. An Iowa backdrop puts Race on this back for 1 count. (R7/P2). Gotch keeps up his attack and Race bails to the floor to escape a crossface and armbar. Gotch follows him outside and body slams Race onto the floor. The action continues with Race escaping to the floor again and again. Gotch is frustrated and comes outside after Race with a series of punches. Back inside, Gotch traps Race in a GOTCH TOE HOLD and Race cannot escape (R6/P7).
