CHIKARA - Barry Manilow for the Rock Hall of Fame! - The West Park Party Center - Cleveland, OH (Card #839)
1) The Batiri defeated Hallowicked, Shane Storm, & Gregory Iron:
The opening trios contest was a whirlwind of action pitting the tecnicos team of Hallowicked, Shane Storm, & Gregory Iron against the rudos team of The Batiri which consists of Obariyon, Kodama, & Kobald. Both teams looked great during this one which featured quick tags and big near falls. A great near fall saw Kodama reverse the momentum of Storm and nail him with the Flying Blockbuster. Iron was impressive during his time in but a dive off of the top rope onto The Batiri on the outside actually led to him losing the advantage. Kobald took over and punished Iron hitting the spear for a near fall. The Batiri also utilized their double-team moves including the double backdrop into backcracker and the Batiri Blitz Kicks. It was Iron who fell in the end when Obariyon countered a corner whip by hitting the Turnbuckle Springboard Backcracker to score the pin.
2) Tursas & Brodie Lee defeated Los Ice Creams:
The popular Los Ice Creams ( El Hijo del Ice Cream & Ice Cream, Jr.) had the unenviable task of facing the devastating new team of Tursas & Brodie Lee who were led to the ring by their manager The Dark Menace. Checking in at over 600-pounds it was Tursas and Lee that were heavily favored going into this one. The Ice Creams had something to say about that and gave them quite a battle including hitting the Cold Stone Stunner and El Asesino on Lee for big near falls. Lee struck back with the package piledriver and nearly pinned El Hijo del Ice Cream with the half nelson superplex. The mighty Tursas was pretty dominant hitting the Giant Lariat, deadlift powerslam and standing powerslam. Tursas won this one for his team when he nailed El Hijo del Ice Cream with the Kreuz Bomb to score the pin.
3) Dragon Dragon defeated Mister ZERO:
In what could be classified as a big upset it was Dragon Dragon coming away with a big win over Mister ZERO. Coming off his huge win over Mike Quackenbush on the last CHIKARA card in Chicago, IL (Card #829), ZERO signed to face record seven-time LOW World Heavyweight champion Mil Mascaras who will be making a special appearance on the upcoming CHIKARA card at Legion Stadium in El Monte, CA (Card #849). He was hoping to add some more momentum going into the match with Mascaras but may have overlooked the gigantic green menace. Dragon survived losing his head and being locked in the newspaper assisted camel clutch to come away with the win. It was a tumultuous battle which ended when Dragon caught ZERO in the Dragon Sleeper to score a submission victory. ZERO was noticeably upset post-match arguing with the referee and claiming he was reaching for his newspaper and not tapping out but the decision stood.
4) F.I.S.T. defeated The Throwbacks:
More trios action saw the tecnicos team of The Throwbacks (Dasher Hatfield, Sugar Dunkerton, & Mr. Touchdown) take on the rudos team of F.I.S.T. (Icarus, Chuck Taylor, & Johnny Gargano). The Throwbacks have been affected by recent infighting between Dunkerton and Touchdown with Hatfield caught in the middle. This was a chance for the team to regain some lost momentum but F.I.S.T. were looking to derail them. Touchdown appeared off of his game as he was on the defensive most of his time in including being hit with a slingshot spear by Gargano for a near fall. Dunkerton rallied The Throwbacks and hit Air Dunkerton on Icarus for a big near fall with Taylor making the save. Hatfield had a good run until he was cut off by Icarus who applied the Wings of Icarus for a submission chance that was broken up by Dunkerton. The finish of a heated contest saw Taylor deliver the Invisible Grenade Elbow Drop before laying Hatfield out with the Omega Driver to score the pin.
5) Vin Gerard defeated Ultramantis Black:
The torrid rivalry between Ultramantis Black and Vin Gerard, who was accompanied by The Dark Menace, continued with a rematch from their time limit draw on the last CHIKARA card. Ultramantis was on fire in the early going including executing the electric chair three times on Gerard. He also delivered the Argentine facebuster for a near fall. Gerard made a comeback on the outside and managed to trap Ultramantis in the STF. He cinched the hold on tight going for the submission but Mantis was able to get to the rope for a break. Gerard went up top but Ultramantis caught him there trying to go for a move but The Dark Menace jabbed his cane into the ankle of Mantis. Gerard regained control and after a running high knee he caught Ultramantis with the Chokehold STO and scored the pin.
6) Eddie Kingston & Colt Cabana defeated Mike Quackenbush & Jigsaw by Count Out:
The last CHIKARA card in Chicago saw an interesting turn of events as Mike Quackenbush and Director of Fun Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana had a few altercations. The main one coming when Quackenbush attacked 12-Large Grand Champion Eddie Kingston following his successful title defense against Jigsaw. Cabana got involved and that led to a four-way battle resulting in this tag team match. The crowd was clearly on the side of the “War King” and Cabana, the latter entering the ring to Copa Cabana by Barry Manilow. Cabana grabbed the mic and alluded to the show title saying that he was going to do an in-ring protest until Manilow rightfully gained entry into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Quackenbush and Jigsaw received a lukewarm reaction coming out and Quackenbush, the founder of CHIKARA, was clearly upset over the crowd favoring Kingston and Cabana. This was an intense battle from the opening move as Quackenbush struck Kingston with a palm strike. Early action saw Quackenbush and Jigsaw dominating with Quack hitting the Quackendriver III on Kingston for a big near fall. Kingston gained a measure of revenge later as Cabana caught Quackenbush with Eat Defeat and made the tag allowing the “War King” to hit Backfist to the Future on Quack for a big near fall. Jigsaw showed some great offense and busted Kingston open after hitting a brainbuster for a near fall. Kingston battled back and caught Jigsaw with the half-nelson suplex for another near fall. It was a great battle down to the finish which ended up on the floor with Cabana backdropping Jigsaw over the guard rail and rolling back in to score a count out victory.
The battle continued post-match with all four men trading blows as CHIKARA officials and other wrestlers ran in to break them up. When the smoke cleared it was an angry Quackenbush grabbing the mic and saying that Cabana and Kingston had to resort to rudo tactics to get the win. Cabana said that they won the match clean but he knew that it was going to draw the ire of Quackenbush who feels that he “deserves everything” in CHIKARA. A bloody Kingston stepped in and told Quackenbush to “put up or shut up” and said that on the next card in El Monte he will defend the 12-Large Grand Championship against the CHIKARA founder. Quackenbush needed no time to accept that challenge and said that he will take his “rightful place” atop CHIKARA when he beats Kingston for the title. Jigsaw seemed upset at that turn of events and questioned Quackenbush but he assured his longtime friend and tag team partner that he will get the first title shot after he beats Kingston.
7) Young Lions Cup: Frightmare defeated Tyler Black to win the title:
Ever since losing the Young Lions Cup to the arrogant Tyler Black in Revere, MA (Card #819), Frightmare has been hungry to get him back into the ring and he got that opportunity in Cleveland. Black, who mainly competes in ROH as one-third of the Kings of Wrestling along with Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli, captured the belt coming off of his big win in the Rey de Voladores during King of Trios weekend. He was hoping to retain it in his version one defense but Frightmare came at him with reckless abandon. Black executed a quick roll up but Frightmare countered with a dropkick followed by the Fright Crusher, an elevated cutter, for a near fall. The pace picked up from there with Frightmare mounting an impressive offensive against the defending champion. He hit the somersault plancha and crucifix bomb which had Black in serious trouble. The crowd was at a fever pitch as Frightmare hit the Frightensteiner and followed it up with his third Fright Crusher of the match to score the pin. The crowd erupted in cheers as Frightmare became a three-time Young Lions Cup champion and his tag team partner Hallowicked helped him celebrate the big win post-match.
8) Campeonatos de Parejas: Osirian Portal defeated The Colony (2-1) to win the titles:
The highly anticipated main event saw The Colony (Fire Ant & Soldier Ant) defend the Campeonatos de Parejas against the Osirian Portal (Amasis & Ophidian) with the crowd split in their support of both teams. CHIKARA Director of Fun Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana was in the ring to accept the presentation of the title belts from Senior Referee Bryce Remsburg with all six men posing for pictures. Ring announcer Gavin Loudspeaker proceeded with the introductions after which all four men shook hands in a nice show of respect.
First Fall: An amazing opening fall saw both teams going all out to attempt to gain that 1-0 advantage. Quick tags and teamwork were evident throughout along with both teams expertly utilizing the lucha libre style tag team rules. A key moment saw the Portal execute the Osirian Sacrament, a simultaneous diving legdrop by Ophidian and diving splash by Amasis, on Fire Ant for what looked to be the finish but Soldier Ant made a last second save. Fire Ant bounced back and hit the Beach Break on both Amasis and Ophidian for near falls. Soldier Ant was force in there during his time in including delivering the spinning elbow strike, saluting headbutt and the TKO which resulted in a two count on Ophidian. Amasis would score another near fall on Fire Ant with the Egyptian Conniption, which is a crucifix flipped into a reverse STO. The finish of a tumultuous opening fall battle saw the Portal hit the Osirian Sacrament on Fire Ant for a second time with Ophidian covering him to score the pin.
Second Fall: Fire Ant was still recovering from the finish of the opening fall when Ophidian got the jump on him. Fire Ant managed to reverse the momentum and then hit the Beach Break for a near fall. The Portal bounced back and hit the Osirian Sacrament on Fire Ant but Soldier Ant made the save and rolled his partner out of the ring. Soldier Ant went at both Amasis and Ophidian with intensity delivering some stiff strikes. The Portal were in trouble and it was Fire Ant gaining revenge as he won the second fall as he hit another Beach Break on Ophidian to score the pin. With the match tied at 1-1 it was now down to the deciding fall to determine who would leave Cleveland as the Campeonatos de Parejas.
Third Fall: The action in the first two falls helped build to a dramatic finish and a crowning of new tag team champions in CHIKARA. The Colony had things going their way early until Fire Ant hitting the Beach Break on Amasis but the “Funky Pharaoh” kicked out with authority. It was a shocking moment and led to the Portal going on a nice offensive against The Colony. Amasis connected with The Move I Beat Moses With and that set up Ophidian going for the kill on Fire Ant. He nailed him with the Egyptian Destroyer, a flipping piledriver, and went for the pin as Amasis cut off a save by Soldier Ant. Remsburg dropped down and made the three count meaning that the Osirian Portal had captured the Campeonatos de Parejas. The crowd erupted in cheers as the popular duo captured the belts for the first time under the LOW Banner. They celebrated their title win with a Dance Off as the crowd encouraging the defeated Colony members to join in. Soldier Ant and Fire Ant showed great class as they celebrated along with the Osirian Portal and then presented them with the title belts before all four men shook hands.
