Thanks for the comments Crimson and Daytondave, next up is action from the NWC...
LOW Northern Wrestling Corporation - Philadelphia Spectrum - Philadelphia, PA (Card #844)
1) Iron Sheik defeated Ricky Landell:
The opening contest didn’t last long as Ricky Landell of ASW took on the Iron Sheik who was accompanied by his tag team partner Nikolai Volkoff. Landell got off to a hot start but the Sheik quickly took him down and locked on a Boston Crab scoring a submission victory. Sheik and Volkoff remained in the ring waving the Iranian and Russian flags respectively as the participants for the next match headed out of the locker room…
2) Stars & Stripes defeated Lanny Poffo & Savage-T by Count Out:
The popular duo of Stars & Stripes (The Patriot & Marcus Alexander Bagwell) took on the ASW team of “The Genius” Lanny Poffo & Savage-T. LOW officials had to head to the ring to prevent a physical confrontation between Stars & Stripes and Nikolai Volkoff & Iron Sheik from breaking out. Volkoff and the Sheik eventually left the ring and this one got underway. The Patriot hit Poffo with the Patriot Missile for a two count in the early going. Poffo came back hitting the Honor Roll on Bagwell for a two count. Savage-T, whose valet KJ Hill was not at ringside, impressed during his time in and used the figure four leglock on Bagwell for a submission chance. Stars & Stripes later hit the double shoulder tackle on Poffo with The Patriot covering him for a two count. It ended up on the outside where Poffo was counted out after he was hit with the Uncle Slam by The Patriot on the floor. Stars & Stripes waved the American flag post-match and vowed to get a match with Volkoff & Sheik.
3) Gorgeous George defeated Dick Hutton:
Two well tested veterans squared off in this bout as Dick Hutton out of Tulsa, OK, took on the flamboyant Gorgeous George who was accompanied by his valet Cherie Dupre. They went back and forth most of the way trading holds and counters. George also got an assist from the Georgie pins and timely interference from Dupre who tripped up Hutton setting up a near fall. Hutton bounced back strong and picked up a near fall of his own with the Cowboy backbreaker and then applied the Abdominal Stretch but George was able to escape. The finish of a hard fought battle saw both men go down from a double clothesline off of the ropes. George recovered first and trapped the dazed Hutton in the Spinning Toe Hold which he cinched on resulting in a submission victory. The crowd jeered the decision as George celebrated before having Dupre hold the ropes open for him so he could exit the ring.
4) Antonino Rocca & Ilio DiPaolo defeated Fred Blassie & George Steele by DQ:
Key tag team action saw the popular pairing of Antonino Rocca & Ilio DiPaolo take on the “King of Men” Fred Blassie & George “The Animal” Steele. Blassie had a hard time controlling his charge, “The Animal”, who is not known for his tag team skills. Rocca and DiPaolo took full advantage of that as they got the heat on Steele for a long stretch. They tied him up with holds like the crushing body scissors and bow and arrow by Rocca and the leg nelson by DiPaolo. Rocca at one point caught Steele attempting a deathjump and brought him off of the top rope with a superplex. DiPaolo then scored a two count on Steele with a bodyslam and press. Steele had enough of the attacks of both opponents and wound up being disqualified snake eyes style when he ran DiPaolo head first into the ring post. Blassie joined in an attack on DiPaolo post-match until Rocca was able to make the save. An irate DiPaolo grabbed the mic and challenged Blassie, a former two-time LOW World Heavyweight champion, to meet him on he next NWC card at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY (Card #852). Blassie resisted at first but then accepted the match with the fired up DiPaolo drawing cheers from the crowd.
5) Diamond Dallas Page defeated The Sheik by DQ:
Another technical decision came in this match as popular Jersey Shore native Diamond Dallas Page took on The Sheik. Accompanied by his manager Abdullah Farouk, the former LOW World Heavyweight champion and four-time LOW International Heavyweight champion was looking to take out some aggression on DDP. It didn’t work as DDP dominated this bout most of the way stunning The Sheik with such moves as the jaw breaker, discus clothesline and swinging neckbreaker. DDP looked to finish things off as he went to the top rope but The Sheik hooked his leg dropping him groin first on the turnbuckle. That was the opening that The Sheik needed and he tore into DDP both biting and choking him. He ignored the threats of the referee to stop his illegal attacks and then in full view of the official he tossed a Fireball into the face of DDP and that resulted in the disqualification decision. Fortunately it was a glancing blow and DDP did not suffer serious injury but once again The Sheik dug into his vicious bag of tricks in order to try and hurt an opponent.
6) Bobo Brazil & Tony Atlas vs. The Warlord & Greg Valentine was a DDQ:
Big grudge tag team action saw Bobo Brazil & “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas join forces to battle the Captain Lou Albano-led team of The Warlord & Greg “The Hammer” Valentine. Albano and his men have been bragging about injuring Andre the Giant in an infamous post-match attack at MSG (Card #835) prompting Brazil and Atlas to pair up in an attempt to avenge their fallen ally. The grotesque Albano, rubber bands hanging from his cheeks, rubbed his belly repeatedly at ringside while getting into a verbal battle with ringsiders. The match, meanwhile, saw both teams battle tooth and nail throughout. Late in the action it was Brazil wailing on The Warlord with the big hammer punch. He then delivered the Coco Butt and went for the pin but Valentine made the save. Atlas joined in and all four men began trading blows which saw the referee call for the bell ordering a double disqualification. LOW officials ran in and had to break it up as Albano corralled his troops and left ringside.
7) The Sheepherders & Ken Doane defeated Samoan Island Tribe:
The long standing rivalry between the Samoan Island Tribe (Alofa, Samu, & Afa, Jr.) and The Sheepherders (Butch Miller & Luke Williams), along with their new flag bearer Ken Doane, saw the two sides do battle in a heated six-man tag team match. The Sheepherders and Doane did a great job isolating Alofa in the early going and really had the SIT in trouble. Alofa finally reversed a move on Doane and applied the pectoral nerve hold leading to a tag. Samu roughed up Doane and scored a two count with a Diving Headbutt. The SIT appeared to be turning things around when Miller got the upper hand and teamed with Williams to execute the Running Knee Smash. Afa, Jr. was out and Williams fell on top of him to score a snake eyes pin. The battle didn’t end there, though, as the SIT assaulted The Sheepherders and Doane afterward and they isolated Williams delivering a triple diving headbutt! Afa, Jr. executed the Lights Out for good measure before Miller and Doane were able to pull Williams out to safety. Williams was attended to be physicians backstage and was said to have suffered a concussion so he will be out of action for a few weeks.
8) LOW International Heavyweight title: Harley Race© defeated Killer Kowalski by DQ to retain the title:
The main event saw Harley Race defend the LOW International Heavyweight title against the formidable challenge of Killer Kowalski who was accompanied by his manager Captain Lou Albano. Kowalski is no stranger to the championship having held the belt previously (Card #196-200) while also challenging for it on a number of occasions. This was a real hard fought battle between two well established veterans of LOW. Kowalski held the upper hand in the early going hammering Race with the jumping elbow smash and using the backbreaker effectively. A mistimed running lariat (ch) by Kowalski saw Race duck under and come back with a forearm slug rattling the challenger. Race went on a nice offensive hitting the swinging neckbreaker before Kowalski bailed out of the ring. Race followed and the two traded blows back and forth as the referee tried to get the action back inside. The two wouldn’t listen and ultimately it was Kowalski getting disqualified when he slammed Race on top of the timekeeper’s table and began choking him. Race battled back and dazed Kowalski with punches to the head before Albano led his charge to the back. Race got the win by disqualification in what was a successful version six defense of the championship.
